Kids today...

Listening to two young girls chatting at the next table while I was at lunch today. They were of uni age, prob just out of school.

During the course of me eating lunch I stopped counting at 200, the number of times they said "like" as part of their conversation. Some sentences every few words 

Expectations seem to have risen since I was a kid.

They are planning on moving into an apartment and deciding where.  They agreed they didn't want to live in Kangaroo Point because "it's way too far from town". (It's 2km at best)   

They also will only live somewhere that's less than 5 years old because they don't want to live somewhere 'old and dirty'.  Oh and it has to have a pool.   

One said that it's already July and she's only been overseas twice so far...   


Too much of a culture of entitlement and instant gratification I reckon.


Obviously by no means all 'kids' are like this, but things certainly appear to have changed since I was at Uni.

I have around 300 'millenials' working for me... they all have unbelievably high expectations ... are they wrong?  Maybe... but unfortunately it was our generation that brought them up and influenced the way they think!  We made the bed..now we have to lie in it.

(it's a word like I've come to hate like in being used like in sentences like. Why does everything have to be "like" like?  )

In the UK it's TV that has f*£ked up kids thinking, they see muppets on TV like Joey Essex who spent something like £75000 on a watch when he couldn't tell the time but TV has made him a millionaire along with a shit load of others from the only way is Essex.  Kids see this as a career so what's the point of school and work when they can become rich by being thick and doing nothing so the country owes them a very high paid job for little work or effort, some wake up and realise the world is not like that but some don't like.

I have 3 young kids the eldest is 7, at their  school they reward them for farting!
It drives me nuts they do an assembly every week giving out certificates for reading etc etc!
I have to constantly tell them that despite the school rewarding them for everything life is not easy and you need to work for things.
I am 36 years old I have no qualifications but i have a  house and my wife stays home with the kids ( her choice) I have no dept and I own everything I have.
I got here by applying myself to everything when I left school worked for free until I found my niche, which happens to be computers.
After working bloody hard I can now relax in the fact that I need to work to live but it doesn't own me!   If I can get my kids to have that attitude towards life hopefully that self entitlement attitude will not be them!

Maybe the issue is not that they are young millenials, more that they are from wealthy families. I've got 2 daughters in their 20s and they aren't like this at all. Neither are their friends, even the well-off ones. I wouldn't tar them all with the same brush on the basis of one conversation.

Truth be told, I feel sorry for them in some ways. A lot of things which we could aspire to, like property ownership, long-term employment, guaranteed pensions, free university education and so on have been taken away. So if they want to take time off and travel the world - good luck to them I say. You're only here once.
