Sad News

GSX1400 rider killed near Frome, Somerset on Sunday evening.
Hope it wasn't anyone on here.

I 1000% agree. Never ever assume that that car/lorry/bus etc driver has seen you - I remember an advert on the TV from years back, it showed a bike with loads of lights on, loud pipes, rider wearing hi-viz. And then came the kicker. If you hold a pencil upright looking at the bike, at 200 feet all you will see are the ends of the wing mirrors. Gulp! So all that "be seen" stuff - don't rely on it. For sure don't stop, it all helps, but just be aware of WHAT that driver at the junction may - or may not - see. And drive defensively.

I can remember that ad Dave with the pencil,this is why I've never agreed with things dangling from rear view mirrors in cars,ie air fresheners,alpha necklaces and such,,fully agree that you assume that everyone else hasn't seen you, I personally always assume that around that blind bend or crest there's a tractor stood there with bloody big spikes on it,

Early in my time as a motorcyclist, like when l was 15 or 16 l approached a car waiting to turn right. I looked the driver in the eyes.....before he turned right. I hit him in the left front mudguard and sailed over the bonnet. Just some deep bruising but ok. Now l know l'm invisible.
Good point you make about the pencil Dave. In a course l did a little while back the instructor suggested we just do a small weave so as to make ourselves a bit wider and to move our headlight....but be prepared to stop.
On Sunday I went for a ride to see my dad, its 82 kms each way. On the way home the Kaimai Range was closed, a motorcyclist had crossed the double yellow centreline and ridden into the front of an oncoming car and died.
As l had to detour, when l got home l had done 266kms quite a bit of that spent thinking about the poor bugger that had passed away. He was 58....the same age as me.
