Would not Start

Was on my home couple weeks back and I sensed the bike was not running perfect so I stayed in the 5 rev range to keep the revs up and work the motor a little. Got home without incident.

Went to start a few days later and the motor would fire BUT then die straight away. Tried several starts with same result.

Couple days later tried several starts again and same result. Being persistent, a couple days later tried again and same result.
So, I ordered new teabag filters (From USA bought 9 for $60 if anyone in Australia is desperate), plugs, oil and air filters to start with the obvious.

The tank was about 1/4 full (2 bars maybe). I always use 98 fuel. The bike is a 2006 with 84,000 kms.

Anyway, I was about to jump on my RT this morning and I thought to my self I'll give the tank a bloody  good shakeup and see what happens.

So on with the front brake and up and down on the bars for about 10 pushes and hit the starter.

Bloody thing fired up straight away.

So I'm hoping that a fuel tank / filters clean is all that it really needs.

I'll report back after I replace the teabag and clean the tank.

Finally received the new teabags. Drained the tank with a syphon hose through an old bed sheet into fuel container to see what rubbish came out. The fuel extracted was very clean. Took the fuel pump out with the usual result of (i) a very dirty teabag (but not as dirty as some I've seen on the forum) (ii) the bowl where the teabag sits was starting to rust and was pretty cruddy on the bottom. Overall I expected both of these  to be MUCH dirtier than it was. I think this just goes to show that these things do not have to be that dirty to start to affect performance.

While the tank was upside down I again syphoned as much fuel as I could out and threw this last bit away as it was likely to have more rubbish that already extracted. I pulled the pump and High Pressure filter apart and used a tin of carb cleaner to fill the HP filter and shake it around several times. The pump and HP filter does not come apart easily but does not require and mechanical assistance.
I put everything back together and hit the starter several times with intermittent firing but no idle.
Decided to half fill the tank as there we're only a couple litres in from previously.
Another several attempts to start with no luck so I put the charger on the battery as it was getting sluggish.
Half hour later I turned the idle up one full turn, hit the starter and it fired right up and idled perfectly.
Put a new air filter in while the tank was off.
Haven't ridden it yet but the one thing I could immediately notice was the crispness in throttle response  from giving it a couple of good sharp revs.
So I'm hoping this translates to in increase in overall throttle response while riding.

Have attached a photo of used teabag (just off the edge of the concrete inside fuel line) and pump bowl.

One thing you definitely didn't do was take the high pressure filter apart because they're glued together. The carb cleaner might work for a while but I wouldn't go far from home if I were you. Look up external filter.

Photo's show a filter after it's been split.
If you look like your passport photo then you're too sick to travel.

I am thinking of doing external filter mod...  Could you explain me...do I have to open HP filter housing apart and take out filter? How to seal housing again?
