The link below is the best I have found to explain / indicate the new MOT rules being introduced from May

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?s=0dcc41da097b02d1a9106f0398869655&p=73755803

What may affect a few UK owners on here are those who have fitted HID kits or HID bulbs - from May 2018 this will be a major fail - extract from article
"Those of you who have changed your standard headlight bulbs for HID's will now get a major fail even if the aim is correct. It has always been an offence to fit HID bulbs to halogen headlamps so the MOT is now in line with that".

It seems though that if you have fitted LED bulbs (rather than HIDs), this isn't a fail. Why? Under UK law, HID's require headlamp wash and self leveling which motorcycles don't have. LED bulbs/headlamps though don't have this same requirement, so are not affected. Hence HID will fail, LED will not.

So if you have a HID light fitted - you could be in line for failing your MOT from May onwards. Refer to Page 7 of the new testing rules (link from within the link above)

I haven't read the whole article, but someone on another forum was concerned re the removal of PAIR system.
Now, as bikes aren't tested for emissions then I'm not sure about this one?

There realy going after the diesel cars now as for the HID bubs on bikes ... they spent years telling us to ride with lights on then made it law that the lights must be on all of the time , and the lights on bikes these days are rubbish !
i intend to live for ever or die trying !!

I have to say this might be a good thing. In my area there seems to be a trend to fit stupidly bright lights to cars (or sometimes bikes) that weren't designed for them. I'm sure it's lovely for the driver sitting behind his 10,000 Watt laser cannon, but it's really dangerous for the rest of us.

Have to agree with that. Even the rear lights of many SUVs have been bothering me for many years. Way to bright and then just on eye level when sitting in a car. Ok, I don't have that problem anymore as I don't drive anymore and riding is only for pleasure during dry daylight.

Only once riden for an hour in the dark last year. Had a bike behind me with add-on lights going high into my mirrors. Had to pull over and let that imbecile ride on lighting up the sky.

I agree..HID's are lethal at times. In the dark, motorway and pissing down with rain..Totally blinded when they're coming towards me :furious:

This is good to know as my mate has HID on his R1,l'll let him know. As for me I changed to LED as my HID kept failing, so I should be alright.

I agree totally 150%

Strangely though I find the new LED battery lights used by cyclists even more blinding, especially when they have them mounted on their bike and helmet as well. I agree they have to be seen, but it's now gone the opposite way as I can't see them due to them blinding me!

Do cyclists even recognize that it's a motorcycle riding on their path. They sure do when a 14 comes :whistling:
