As far as I know to get to the gearbox it's a complete engine strip, cant just go through the sump.

It can be - you have to be careful to support the engine when its upside down so there is no pressure on the cylinders / cylinder head - a few who have done the gearbox mod who "rested" the engine on its head to do the gearbox (which you can do by removing the sump), have found that after fixing the gears and putting the engine back that the base gasket has leaked - apparently due to the weight of the engine on it (even though its not been removed) - or so the mechanics say anyway!
