Sounds like you hit a false neutral - even though it felt like you selected the gear.

As it was only the once, I don't think it's anything to worry about - we've all missed a gear change at times.  Embarrising to do it whilst overtaking, bugger!

As KC said, just a false neutral and nothing to worry about. I have done it a couple of times

As KiwiCol and Sweaty have said Mark, no issue, just a false neutral that happens from time to time, I did it on my K7 a few times, and would have sworn blind I had selected the gear OK, but still got the embarrassing peak revs for a second or so! And yes it was when I was giving mine a few beans as well

If you were really worried, you could always have the gear dogs undercut, that stops the gears disengaging under heavy load.  It's a bit drastic for a std powered bike like the 14, but higher output versions / race / drag bikes often do this mod for the same reason.

OK thanks all. Il wait n see if it keeps happening or it was a one off. Thinking may be the start of the gearbox problems these beasts get guess il thoget it for now and see how it goes.. Not good was over taking a line of cars at the time

Whilst not unknown on later 14's, it was more the K2/K3 that suffered from second gear issues, and typically those that were ridden like they were stolen all of the time. On the K5 onwards, Suzuki updated the second gear (and indeed I believe this is now the gear they fit to failed K2/3 gearboxes), which has improved the issue, but there have still been the odd failure recorded on the forums on later models, but pretty rare.

No doubt you may do it again, but unless it is doing it most of the time and under normal riding conditions, then you don't have an issue.

Due to the excellent design of a lot of Suzuki gearboxes, particularly the shape of the dogs, false neutrals are very rare. In about 45 000 miles I reckon I have had well less than 10 of them.
No its not a fault.

the known fault is 2nd gear and it jumps out of 2nd when going up from 1st .
my k2 had this fault
its 2 gears the need replaced and maybe a selector fork  and needs engine out but can be done without stripping the top end just remove the lower casing and its accessible.
if and thing other than going up from 1st to 2nd its something else .

I rode a Guzzi which had plenty of false neutrals.


Or rather they were real neutrals and it seemed to have at least one between every gear, if not a few extra peppered in for good measure.


In fact finding a gear of any kind was quite an accomplishment.




OK well, that's a bit of an exaggeration but it was entirely unlike what we've come to expect from Suzuki boxes....

Had a Buell for 11yrs.  Gear changes were always a leap into the unknown..

As far as I know to get to the gearbox it's a complete engine strip, cant just go through the sump.
