I had a 5 day weekend, so trundled off on the tractor to see Hadrian's Wall as I've never actually bothered before. Came back a day early as camping on cold nights is for the young, but walked a couple of mile of the wall & saw two Roman camps.

I'll put some pics up later when I've got around to shrinking them.

My uncle Sean was a history lecturer at Manchester Uni so he and I have spent time on the Roman walls and mini coliseum there. I'd like to see Hadrians wall. There are gates in Athens called Hadrians I'd guess it's the same General then Emperor who visited every place the Romans attempted to subjugate.

The River Wharf is rather low currently, I was stood in the middle of the river bed to take this

Vindolanda Roman Fort, where thousands of wooden tablets have been discovered. They are the approx size & thickness of a postcard and unique in the Uk, possibly europe

Then the Wall, I only walked from milecastle 41 to 42. Plus a few miles from & back to the campsite via a pub so about 5miles in total but it's bloody steep as the steps in places show.

Thanks for the pics and report @Hooli you guys are so close to so much history.

Who built Hadrian's wall and why?

Hadrian's Wall was built by the Roman army on the orders of Emperor Hadrian, following his visit to Britain in 122 AD. The wall was constructed to demarcate the northern frontier of the Roman province of Britannia and to control the movement of people and goods, as well as to act as a deterrent against potential incursions from tribes to the north.

A testament to how well built Roman engineering was. The walls in Chester are made of stones the size of the stones used in the construction of the pyramids.

My outlaws used to live in a house built right next to Hadrian's wall and they had a roman well in their garden, still had to pay water rates though.

My old cottage had a cesspit & guttering ran to a soakaway in the garden. Water rates were cheap as we only paid for the supply, about the only cheap thing about the place.

Mt.Mee today a little later than normal for lunch at Birches Restaurant to celebrate my 65th birthday with great friends and awesome food.
The wind didn't assist so the ride was less than pleasant 🧐

Happy birthday Chris.

Ignore the barbed comment about the curved jersey, that's just the distortion you get with wide angle lenses.

Bugger, that's not what I meant...it's just what happens when the camera operator moves back so they can get the subject in frame.

Bugger, that's not what I meant either...

My hoped-for career in international diplomacy seems to be slipping away!
There's always room in the world for a bit more tolerance and kindness.
