I'm considering repainting parts of my frame that have some minor paint damage. Has anyone done this with out completely removing everything and stripping the frame bare? I'm thinking I can rub down the thick edges near any chips or scratches, spray some primer on then top coat. Has anyone done this? Am I making a mistake? I'm thinking something like PJ1 gloss fast black for the top coat

My frame is pretty good considering the age of it, but in the odd place where there has been a tiny bit of rust or a stone chip I have used Hammerite Smooth Black paint applied with a small artist type brush, pretty good match & very durable

I've used hammerite smooth spray on the xjr engine with goods results when I had the frame powdercoated.
Just remember hammerite does not play well with other new paint.

Not sure about spraying to touch up, ive found pencil touch works good, just a small brush. I remember UK member saying Halfords black pretty much perfect match.Probably was Barmy, hes the paint code Man😎

I've slapped hammerite smooth on mine in various places. But I've never been trying for a show bike & it's too glossy compared to the unpainted bits - no idea if that'd be true for a looked after example though.

Smooth Hammerite  satin finish on mine - quite a fair amount of corrosion only 17K miles but bloody winter salted roads  :bugga:

I also bought some Hammerite spray, but haven´t used it yet. Guess I made a mistake and went for the glossy. Anyway it´s just for some very minor spots that aren´t even rusted, just scuffed and tucked away, barely visible. I´m just a picky guy.

Personally I think the gloss is the way to go, someone has touched up mine in past with matt or satin and its not a good match  :whatever:

Dont think i could deal with salty roads, i hate any blemish but the crap you northerners get is just bad.

My first 14 (owned from new) I rode year round. Wet salted roads inclusive. Corrosion wasn't nearly as bad as Notty's. Current 14 bought used but but apparently never ridden on salty roads. So I am glad I have this one. Only ride her on dry roads. When roads are salted, I wait until the next good rain has washed it off and the roads are dry again before I take her out again.

I lived on a Mediterranean island. After a year, many of my tools in the shed were rusty. There is such a thing as "Salt in the Air", see: Sea Spray

@Notty , living in Cardiff, I suspect you would get corrosion even if you were not riding on salted roads.

Agree Andre, sub tropical climate here, 15 ks from ocean, yeah, we get rust from prevailing.House on metal stumps, even they rusted.

No sea rust here in Lisbon, even living 2km from the big river. No rain on the bike, only water is catches is from washing. In the garage I use a dehumidifier. Some folks still ask if i bought a new bike; 19 years and counting.
