More fun with the Garmin Zumo

I'm just bringing plans together for a week in the Mosel and Ardennes for next month; A bit of a side trip as the main event for this year will be in August.

Some of you may remember my experience with the Garmin Zumo the first time I took it abroad and know that I have very little trust in the thing.

I've done this trip several times before perfectly well without SatNav but this morning I dropped in the addresses of my overnight hotels and the apartment that we are due to stay in for the week, just for the final streets really.

A pretty straightforward journey, down to the tunnel at Folkstone, round the top of Lille, into southern Belgium for an overnight stop and then through Luxemborg into the Mosel valley.

Take a look at what Garmin have come up with for these waypoints  Down to Folkstone as you would expect but then 300 odd miles back north to Hull - presumably for a night on the ferry to Rotterdam so that we can take Belgium unexpectedly from behind.

I am so glad I don't follow this thing blindly!

Hasnt been the greatest piece of kit that Garmin.  I recall the grief it caused you last time.
Another great day on the right side of the grass.😎

Fills me with confidence for mine..... Not a cheap bit of kit either.

Perhaps it's in WW2 mode and you have the 'flanking manoeuvre" feature activated ?

Good point Vlad......but sadly he will have run out of gas before he outflanks anyone.

Maybe get the ferry to stop off at one of the rigs in the North Sea to fuel up?

Hi Pete, I can't see the map clearly, but it appears to me you could be entering the waypoints in the wrong order to what you want as a route. You can enter as many waypoints as you like & in any order, you just have to move them up or down & get a final route to save.

I think the waypoints are in the right order, but crossing the channel is always a problem, I've had similar trying to include the Newhaven to Dieppe boat, left to it's own devices it will pick Dover-Calais I've tried all sorts to include a Newhaven-Dieppe crossing, including adding waypoints at Newhaven and Dieppe for a route to Normandy but still I get the Dover-Calais crossing... like there's no alternative.
If I'm going on the tunnel I'd split the route into manageable sections so home to Folkestone, then Calais to next waypoint, then plan a route for each day which works better as you get an ETA, and number of miles (or Km) to go.

Yeah I think you have the right idea. One route for the UK portion, another route for the continent.

That's how I do it Pete, break it down to day runs, enter all the waypoints for that piece & save. I like the ETA & K's to dest readouts as well.

Never tried doing a route crossing the strait, but we've only got 1 option there anyway, so probably wouldn't make any difference to us.

Cheers, happy riding mate.
