Whiteways a couple of weeks ago

Hooli

I've not been there for years, since I escaped the south. I seem to remember some decent enough roads but too much traffic.

Correct and plod are now targeting small plates at boxhill/rykas.
Reasonable food at whiteways, teas grim though. Ceasefire near ford do a great breakfast.

They were dong small plates back then too. I've never understood why people fit them, it's just asking to get stopped.

This us a real active push on plates, I've run 8x6 before and it looked good, in fact I have one for the gsx but I just don't need the grief involved so didn'tfit it, likewise I went for road legal stamped Delkevics rather than the Werx 300 mm I liked just  to avoid future problems.

This 'small plate' thing is a bit of a mystery to me & probably to a fair few down under.  We get a plate issued & that's it.
From reading the above & a couple of other threads, seems you can get a smaller plate issued?  by the authorities I'd presume, then other authorities (police & the like) take exception with the "officially issued"? smaller plate??   Bloody weird IMO, they're either allowed or not, they must be allowed as they're manufactured & issued, is it just coppers being jobsworths?

We have a standard legal registration plate which should be 9x7" for bikes and as well as having the letters numbers at a standard size and spacing they also have to show the makers/suppliers name on them now and also possibly BS markings, the smaller illegal plates are sold as "SHOW PLATES" and don't have the makers/suppliers name on them or BS markings & quite often the spacing of letters are altered, the "SHOW PLATE" is the loop hole used by sellers and the invoice will usually state not for road use

There may be other stipulations but that I think is the crooks of it, cars are a different size but the same rules apply

It should also be added that the standard plate is 9 x 7 inches, a 8 x 6 inch plate can still easily be read by ANPR cameras and at 20.5 metres aka the eyedight test used at driving test, possibly even with a 7 x 5 plate. I get it that some plates a stupidly small and nobody can read them but plod are on the case 🤨

Andre

Phil, the angle your plate is fitted might make it difficult to read. Here (Germany) 30° angle is max allowed. Depending on the context you'll face criminal charges.

We get what we get, no choice in size. Ive always looked at your huge UK plates, glad ours are small.

KiwiCol

Why would you want a "Show Plate" ?  Does the bike on show look worse with a road legal plate?   Unless you're gonna only ride on a track & show it, you'll need to have the real plate installed.

A plate is just what it is,  :whatever:   I guess peeps will always try n push the boundries, but pushing a plate boundry?   Nah, push the speed limits - on closed circuits only,  -   naturally.  :whistling:  :rofl2:

My wife and I got pulled over a good few years ago as there was a bit of a purge on at the time and although our bikes were legal we both had iridium visors on.  I hid my helmet under my bike while I was interrogated and was told there had been a fatality in the last day or so which is why they were stopping bikes.  They were just about to measure my wife's number plate as one thought it was undersized when three lads got pulled in, they all smiled and sent us on our way.
We caught up with those lads a few hours later and they were not happy, between them the got done for 2 number plates, three exhausts, two black visors a worn tyre and a warning for having a bad attitude towards the police.
Thankfully the police only take any interest in bikes if you being really stupid, then all other minor offences (plates, exhaust, visors ETC) are taken into account.
Keep the rubber side down.          Mick

Our UK plates don't actually have to be 9"x7" BUT there is a minimum size for the letters, a prescribed font & a minimum gap between the characters along with a minimum border around the edge. So with a normal length reg number it works out at 9"x7".
Get a private plate with less characters & you can have a smaller plate provided all the above details are still correct.

Personally I don't see the point on most bikes. There's the occasional one where the standard plate looks the side of a house because the bike is so small, but that sure doesn't include 14s. I think 14s look worse with small plates if I'm honest.
