By coincidence I was doing a search a few weeks ago on manufacturing in Wolverhampton and found myself at this web site.

Even as a "local" I don't think I had realised what a significant business Villers were. Such a shame that we have lost so much manufacturing from the West Midlands, another was Guy Motors who exported trucks and buses all over the world, particularly "the colonies".

hard to believe the UK ruled the world in manufacturing and lots of other stuff, not any more

There's quite a few older things that appeal to me, my father still uses his Little Grey Fergie TE20, I bought a Fergie 135 instead of a newer model, a Damascus barrelled Holland and Holland side by side, rolltop desk, my favourite bike here is 43 years old, we've had Series 1,2 and 3 Landrover, a very early Mini, still have Fordson Major tractors in the family, I have a quiet old military bayonet in my tool box etc etc. A lot of my family are rural folk of farmers and having old stuff around is just normal.

Absolutely!  A huge amount of the older stuff here came from the UK, Tractors, machinery, Sheffield Steel cutlery, even now lots of bedding and cotton goods are referred to as "Manchester" even though they no longer come from there. I have a brother in law and 2 nephews who work for JCB, they are proud of the stuff they make but I rarely see JCB's here, just Hitachi, Komatsu, Cat etc. Australia is no better, we never had a manufacturing base to rival the UK, but now we have next to nothing, so much stuff imported from China, India, Asia etc.

No but often think I'd love a Ford 9N, but have nowhere to park it let alone drive it :(
