Remember my first camping trip on a bike. Was most likely 15, we went to Whitianga, big trip on a trail bike. Well we had just put the tent up when a Triumph Hurricane pulls in and he starts putting his tent up next to us. Same colour as the one in your photo.
It was just stunning....... a bit like his missus.

Well for me it is this the ZRX1200 Daeg - love these bikes - sold my 2006 Eddie Lawson rep to fund a Hayabusa - and its the only bike that I have ever regretted selling but in the process of an extensive rebuild of a 1998 1100

1975 i had a 500 kawa. much nicer than the photo. a time bomb standard. i built expansion chambers for it, pulled the ports out 2mm, fitted 550 suzuki pistons. you could choose disc brake front end with points, mine was that. or drum with cdi ignition. faster had worse brakes. wtf. to ride was amazing, scariest ive ever owned. totally didnt handle.after engine mods, no power at all below 4k revs. 5k it sort of moved. 6k it exploded until 7500. then the points bounced, flames out exhaust. never had power measured but was lots. front wheel up, adrenalin plus. was going to fit cdi ignition, never got there. wouldve revved to maybe 9k then. exploded, maybe. my mates rode it, never again they said. one mate still talks about it. today, yep, id love to have it in shed. one more bit, it held 15 litres of fuel, once ran out below 80ks. works out to around 14mpg.

I've had my eye on one of these GT's for some time, the reviews have always been good 👍

I rode the unfaired version some years ago and thought at the time it can't replace my GSX1400. Now I'm not so sure 🙀

I like the look & sound of them Grog, but I think being Italian they'd fall apart if used as much as I ride bikes. Italian stuff is for looking at & polishing, not riding.

They are about the only Duke I like, oddly they are the only one I know of that doesn't sound like the clutch is falling off too.

Nice I suppose, I've reached an age in life that I can basically have any bike I want.
I'll have my GSX1400 thanks.

The oldish bod at 75yrs would love to have my GSXR1000 back again, but those things are too physical for me nowdays..
I don't try wheelies or lighting up the rear now.  lol.

Pic is me at 60yrs on my usual Sunday morning fang over the Rimutakas NZ.  (modified 1200 Bandit ).

Same Roo, whatever i want, keep looking but havent found a 14 replacement, hard to match that magnificent motor. Smooth, grunty, reliable, economical, best looking motor, some of those new bike motors look crap, 14 is a work of art. IMO

I quite like the look of this, the Indian FTR 1200. Although the first thing I would do is remove that exhaust and that rear ugly thing that holds the reg plate and replace it with a stubby carbon Acro and a little tail tidy under the rear light. It would look much prettier.

Yeah, seen that one.  It's a 2L Flat 8! and real heavy.  It does look good to the eye (IMO) & on paper, but the quality & reliability are suspect I'd suggest.  I'd let someone else be the guinea pig with these.

I still keep looking at this:

H2 Tourer (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/126573112652?itmmeta=01J3F8BE8SXMQWWNRPA6J0HYC6&hash=item1d78586d4c:g:j~UAAOSwWqNmTiF7&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA4BDilsabt%2Ff0Aq%2BQfbf7HNTiz%2F7GiyCf8dQEEW46i59D3LluuqbArYve5VUriqUHfjZQwca3ClUP9%2BahOUNcQwcXhYrjpfIOp9fs1xzAz3lxv4kfdy6g9MMLgQeGPyFnKxgdDXsh55iyVvZ14R82juId%2F3GnNuYZ1O8c%2FTFMzw%2FJsdNVsp50RCME6KA6iI%2B7HQRDW%2B0t7uiJrlVAgZkaaYcMc7g3kYlMUeUYGmfwTz9MXOe9YH81JpwNP6IfZQ4gi8x7vEtXxRrGHukEqR8QFFUw7556zc3PAZnXJV7GPmil%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR7zkreibZA)

It's been advertised for a while now which is slightly concerning, but it seems a fair price for a moderate milage.

As some of you may know I have a 2009 Z1000 and a 2016 GTR1400 in the garage alongside the GSX and I keep toying with the idea of chopping the Z1000 in for one of these. It should more than do the job the Z1000 does and if it turned out comfortable enough for distance riding maybe I could let the GTR go – as my wife does not come touring with me anymore downsizing to something a bit lighter may make sense.

I've no idea what my Z1000 would fetch in PX, but I still have the money aside that I got from selling the Z1300 so it may not need too much of a raid on the pension fund. But do I really need it? The two Kwaks I have do their respective jobs perfectly well and they are a known quantity.

The GSX is not going anywhere at the moment though.

Rynglieder, just watched a few reviews, i like doing that stuff. I thought would be a near perfect, gets a few knocks.2 hour comfort only, screen too low, woody fr. brake feel, awesome modern bike looks i thought. I would think your melding 2 bikes into one.  :onya:   Very fast exciting ride  id think.

I've always wanted a Yammy MT01. There is one for sale near my place but the wife said only if I sell 2 of my bikes first to fund it and I'm too emotionally attached to them:( (I would never sell the 1400 though)

Some 500 to 800 cc twin, less than 200kg. Naked bike, not any plastic bullet.

My first thought is is a retro Triumph, Speed Twin or that sort of thing.

Quote from: Coopz on Thursday, 22 August  2024, 11:46 AMI've always wanted a Yammy MT01. There is one for sale near my place but the wife said only if I sell 2 of my bikes first to fund it and I'm too emotionally attached to them:( (I would never sell the 1400 though)

I've never ridden one but have always liked their oddball styling and similar dimensions to the GSX1400.

My friend owns a Yamaha dealership so I've ridden all but the most exotic. MT01 surprised me, when you decelerate or down shift that massive lump of metal moves forwards quite rapidly and destroys any resemblance of turn in. Freaking scary first time it happened.
Newer model MT10 is just a naked M1.

I liked the MT01, saw one at a gas station in the old TZ Yamaha red and white with the cheapo Ohlins on.
Spied this in Whitianga on our recent ride. Looks like it would be right at home with a 50 Cal mounted on it.

My mate has a mint one, we go out most weeks- goes well but vibration is a killer from the 1800 ? v twin and if I pull in behind the draught from the exhausts blow my hair ( if I had any of course )  :)

1670cc but known as the 1700

Warrior handled well for a big cruiser. With a set of V&H pipes it was a car alarm beacon 😂 The riding style with legs out in front was a killer for my spine ... liked them enough to buy two but no longer

Thinking today... something I'm not great at.  :rofl2:

I'd love to put a 1340 Hayabusa Gen-2 / Gen-3 or B-King engine into a GSX1400. The downside is the engines are expensive and certainly not pretty or suited to the 14's style, and stuff like the downdraught throttle body's my be an issue, but 160-180hp from a stock reliable engine with no loud pipes or huge big bores or boost would be very nice.

I like the 14's looks, riding position, comfy seat, big tank, easy to get to anything etc, but really do like those 1340 engines.

Most of the time 14 grunt is more than enough.Way more. Just sometimes id like a few more revs/bhp.Diavel was good at that, Mates 14 with hairdryer(supercharger) just amazing. A 14 with Busa motor, that would tick all boxes except looks. Do we know a better looking motorcycle motor, probably not.

I was supposed to book a test ride on an Indian FTR1200 but I forgot all about it until the dealers messaged me the other day . Would I be interested in this one? I said yes of course but alas no money to pay for it ,not interested in finance deals, never have been ,never will be. I'm gonna pop over there and see if I can arrange a test ride.

Here's a link to the spec's on the FTR, reads very good.  (not as good as a R3GT though . . . :whistling: )  120HP 118nm torque, 6,000rpm but only a 12.9L tank.  That would be a big change form the 23L we get in the 1400.

I'm going to suggest on a twisty road the GSX would be better and on highway run GT might be slightly better.

Can of worms now opened. 😂😂😂

Post by: KiwiCol on Friday, 31 January 2025, 11:11 AM
It would all depend on the rider Chris, me on the R3Gt & Irish Jeff on his RD250 (or anything really) & Jeff would win.  Same rider on each machine over the same course, that's a different story.
The R3GT isn't a sports bike & was never meant as competition for a sports bike, but it can sure shift with the right rider. Not saying I'm that rider, far from it, but I'm enjoying my rides & enjoying getting to know & use more of it's 'personality'. Remember mine is unrestricted & can use 100% throttle, std ya get 65-67% throttle when twist grip is at 100% open. Mine also has the 'Penner tune' with improved AF tables & quicker throttle response.

The GSX definitely tips in quicker & is more flickable, but, the extra horses & massive torque are an advantage, as are the Brembo ABS brakes.  The R3Gt is no slouch through twisties, it's not a Harley, it can lean impressively TBH.

As to which bike would win over a set course? IMO it would really depend on the actual course, if the R3GT could use it's additional power, it'd leave the 14 for dust, if it's very twisty & tight, IMO the 14 would probably take the chequered flag on that one.

Main thing is for us to enjoy our variety of machines & ride 'em as often as we can, before we get too old / crook to do so.  :onya:               (worms safely back in the can . . . )

:cruisin:

what about B-King motor in a GSX1400 frame, then tune the B-King to Hayabusa specs?  most of the 'tidying up' has already been done to make the B-King look reasonable as a naked.

B-King motor is a Gen-2 motor with a few bits painted black. The appeal of the B-King is, unlike almost every other Japanese big naked is not a detuned or soft tuned engine, all the differences are external, airbox, ECU, exhaust, so using one as a donor engine is pretty much same-same other than black paint on the barrels etc. I do agree the finish on the engine is a bit better to be seen than hidden behind a fairing Busa version.

Racer Jean-Claude Olivier did the original and convinced Yamaha to develop it.

It never did very well, weight, lacked grip on lose surfaces etc.  I still think it'd be a heap of fun and very different.

A lad I knew in the UK did a Triumph Tiger with the 4- cylinder 1200 Daytona engine. It got a lot of attention but he struggled a bit with it.

i used to think so too, but they grow on you. I love my K1300GT, and the GS's have their own appeal.  The K 1300R and S are also pretty cool because they don't look like any other bikes out there, i think that's part of the appeal.

Along with my normal and quite long wish list of everything from X1 Yoshibusa's, 1135E's, SD Katana's, GS1200SS, Inazuma's and all things 16v iL4 Suzuki...  I have been looking at GSX1400 prices.

Good condition, tidy black 2008's aren't quite in my target budget at the moment but who knows, that may change.

I do like the one I have, but it's had a hard life and has a list of damage and jobs that need doing.  If I had the funds I'd be tempted to buy a nice one, use the good bits off mine and sell the bits I don't need.
