Title: Part number please K7 model!
Post by: Speedy1959 on Friday, 18 August 2023, 04:25 AM
Hi all,

I ve had a recurring weep on my left fork leg for a while now..
Not sure why as I replaced both seals with Genuine Suzuki ones...

Long story short...
I dismantled the fork and discovered that the plastic bit that goes into the bottom of the fork leg was shattered into 4 pieces!
Im talking about the yellow plastic bit that the damper rod sits in which the allen bolt at the very bottom tightens through..

Ive looked on the Fowlers website and its not at all clear (to me) what the part number is..
Heres the page:

https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/5290344/gsx1400-k6-zk7-06-07/front-fork-damper

As a matter of interest what exactky does that plastic bit do?
It cant act as an oil seal as mine was shattered and didnt leak from the bottom allen bolt..
I suppose what I am asking is, do i need it ?

Ive ordered the part from Japan via "Webike.net" and even with express postage its about 40% less than Fowlers..
For now I have re assembled without that placky bit in situ..
There is NO LEAK from the forks at all.
As Hard Road says that is fitted as a sort of shock absorber for the last 10mm of travel (Large pot hole or a bad wheelie).. I have to say the fork re assmbled A LOT easier without that damned placcy bit !

I have just done a 135 mile ride over some VERY crappy B roads in the Yorkshire dales..
I can confirm that I have ZERO leakes from the fork thats been refitted WITHOUT to Placcy "oil Stop" part!
In fact even though I have ordered the part from Japan, I am VERY tempted to leave well alone and NOT fit the part when it arives!
Seriously she behaves spot on and I can tell NO difference with the part fitted and not fitted!
Believe me I have gone over some VERY crappy roads with pot holes and shitty surfaces..
Of more importance to me is the fact that the new oil seal is 100% effective. Not a single smear of oil.
I would go as far as to say if you have a damaged "Oil stop" then remove it and dont bother being ripped off with the £60 + charge for a new one!!

I have done the seals in my and my mates K7 and I can assure that part was aluminium. Used pyramid seals in both and have had no issues.

My bikes a 2008 (K7) and both oil stops are both crappy placcy!
In my case I used Suzuki oil seals and Rock Oil 5 weight fork oil.

Just received the "Oil stop" from Webike.com (Fantastic service in less than a week all the way from Japan).
It's 100% definitely plastic.
It's white not yellow but definitely plastic.

Is it the correct one? The K2-K4 were white and K5 on were yellow and were a different shape, I showed this in the link where I had the two side by side for comparison, 6th post down;

You may find out the difference when you bottom out the fork. Then you get really ripped off.

The point I was making was that despite all the crappy roads and pot holes my forks have never bottomed out.
I NEVER do wheelies so I guess I will be just fine !

As long as you are aware what the function of the oil lock piece is.

I never do wheelies either (not on purpose anyway). Somehow I doubt you will be able to bottom out the fork with them :whatever:

I do know however what it means to go well over 200 km/h and then have to do an emergency stop action. Very glad I had these plastic bits in place.

Still wonder why your's went to pieces. From the pic they do look more flimsy than the white K2 ones.

Thursday morning and that Placcy part arrived all the way from Japan in less than a week!!
This one is white plastic (Old was yellow)..
Strange thing is I had received an e mail from the company saying it could be over a month!
That was why I went ahead and reassembled my fork without the placcy bit, as there is no way on Earth its being off the road for a month!

Last night (YET AGAIN) I removed the fork and dis assembled it all to fit that pain in the ass placcy bit!
Despite the fork oil being just 1 week old I replaced it all in both legs!
By the way the fork oil was BLACK after only 135 miles or so !!!
So you cant just look at the colour to determin the age.

Andre, just can now sleep easier as I have the Placcy bit refitted.

Here endeth the saga (I HOPE).

Fork that, glad you got it sorted.  It's real important to get all the old oil out of the inner cartridges, I wash them out with kerosene or mineral turns, actuating them all the time and then blowing them out with compressed air.

Post by: hard road on Friday, 25 August 2023, 07:13 PM
just like I said you have to wash out the damper rod to get all the old oil out, any thats left will mix with the new oil and turn it dark/black.  same thing happens with engine oil.

Yeah, im a Mechanic, do most things but hate messing with forks. Just Me.Take them out, suspension bloke does whatever, pay him the bucks, never a problem. Refit and all good. I like his advice, his cost, the way he gets them to work. All i need. Probably not that hard but thats my way.

I pump the cartridge empty. Then dip the end in a cup with the left over oil from the last change and pump it a few; then repeat with fresh left over oil till clear. After 3500 km the oil looked minimally polluted. I also use the oil to clean the rest of the fork inners.

When I change the engine oil I NEVER drain the oil cooler!
So with this in mind I am NOT concerned about the odd ML left in the forks!
If I change my fork oil say once a year then this is FAR more often then  the usual once every blown fork seal (AKA 5years).
Its all too easy to become over anal about maintenance..
As an X girlfriend once said to me...
Some is enough... And enough is too much !!
Make of that what you will!

I have another life to lead outside of worrying about my fork oil..
I do the best I can with NO GARAGE and working outside (dodging the rain)..
If thats not good enough, then so be it!
I wont be losing sleep over it and neither will my bike.

I wasn't telling you what to do speedy  :undecided:   as a professional mechanic its what I did to customers forks (and my own) in the workshop.  I would like to do the same with engine oil but a full strip down is a bit OTT
