Title: Dibley's New (old) 1400 K3
Post by: Dwain Dibley on Wednesday, 08 March 2023, 06:35 AM
Well, I thought I would document the fettling of the 1400 here.
It's not really a build blog, more a recording of events and odd jobs. :coffeescreen:

As you know I am about to tackle the rust in the tank, now fortunately its not too bad, I have seen worse, but it needs attention so I have bought a gallon of Evapo-rust.
I took the seat off and the inner tray came out, then it's the side panels, as you all know there is one bolt either side and they pull off.
Who ever did it before didn't see the fixings and broke the bottom half before they eventually did.
A small bolt fell out of the RHS one, looks like it should be holding the bottom of the rear res, but as there is no fixing on the res that I can see, I assume it's an after market one.
Grommit missing on LHS and the tank cushions are odd, not weird just not the same as each other. One is home made with a thread in it.

My Son-in-Law Liam came round today to assist with the tank removal......Whaaat ?? I hear you cry... I know its easy but 4 hands is better than 2 in my book, and nothing broke, got dropped, or dented !!  :happy1: :boogie2:

We drained the tank with an old fish tank pump first, into a five Gallon can. I thought it was great when I bought the bike, loads of fuel...YAY!! I wish it had been on reserve now.

We disconnected the fuel line at the engine end, as it's more accessible than the other end right under the tank at the pump.
I forgot to get a "before" picture of the inside, before I tipped in the Evapo-Rust in there DOH !!, but I will say, you could not see metal at all on the top of the inside.

We removed the pump, as this made life easier.

The pic you see below of the inside is at 2.5 hours in, and you can see metal, so it is working.

The stuff has no smell and looks like water, so I was dubious, We thought maybe they had just sent a gallon of water. LOL
Liam cleaned the pump while I was looking after the tank, he said some crap came out of there, so I think I did the right thing by not waiting to do this job.

The only bad bit ??  The breather pipe was petrified and just broke into pieces, so a replacement has to be found.

Pic 6, I am going to have a look at the air filter while I can get to it.

I am going to turn the tank regularly over the next 2 days or so, until I am happy with the results, so far it's very good.

I also treated the underside to some anti rust fluid, and I plan to paint it before refitting it on the bike.

Suggestion as your breather pipe fell apart. Change the low pressure line that goes from the back of the tank to the swirl pot around the teabag too. It's quite annoying when they split & all your fuel falls out.

You can also fit a small inline filter in it, with the flow going forwards (towards the pump) and you'll find it collects a surprising amount of crap over time. It needs to be a small filter to fit as it's all quite snug when the tank is on.

I will then, even though it is still quite flexible, as is the top of the breather, it is easy to do now while the tank is off.
Future proofing.... as much as can be done EH Hooli ?.   :onya:

I have realised that the threaded hole under the rear res is to secure the side panel LOL  :happy1:

But that still leaves the conundrum of where the little bolt came from  ???

Could it be a battery terminal bolt that someone has dropped into the bike & replaced rather than search properly for it?

So the tank has soaked on it's back for 24 hrs give or take, and this is the result.

Loads of rust has come off and is suspended in the fluid. I have stood the tank on it's nose now for the next phase.

Nah, it looks worse than it is, the fluid seems to lift and encase the rust. A mate of mine had the same issue, he used a different product and his tank was pinholed, all good after treatment.

Here's his K2. I wonder if anyone knows where it is now ??

Meanwhile, the soaking continues. With the snow outside I don't see the need to rush.

I am going to pull the sender unit out to make flushing the tank easier.

Delayed a day due to my mothers boiler breaking down,
It's time to get the Evapo-Rust out and flush the tank.
I saved the E.R. in a suitable container, as I want to see if it is still usable. I have a couple of bolts soaking as we speak.
I set up the tank outside on some wood and gave it what for with the pressure washer.

I thought, while the tank wash was brewing I would have a look at the air filter, turns out it's nice and new and clean, but can you spot the bonus item ??

I couldn't get my hat on hardly, almost had to put the thermos down..... :happy1:

I also have the sender out for a clean.

Mine fell out when I did my filter , it hid behind the frame just to the left in your pic. I couldn't retrieve it with my fat fingers so my neighbour (a woman) did it for me as her fingers were much smaller. A large glass of red wine was accepted as payment for her good deeds and all was well again. Happy days.

At least you looked for yours and didn't just bung anything in there... !!

I wouldn't mind if I had lost it myself, but the last owner, or the bike shop had, and I have forked out for new. LOL

Still, it could have been worse, it could have jammed in something vital, and I now have spares at Dibley Towers.

I had to buy side panel rubbers anyway.

OK.....So I just sloshed a pint of Kerosene around in the tank, to eliminate any water/water contact with metal, and to coat the metal.

Next will be a gentle rub down and a bit of paint on the underside.

I have ordered some pipe to replace the breather/water pipe, and also some for a new fuel pipe from the tank to the pump.

Right, that's the second coat on. Once it's dry enough I will get the pump and sender back in. I am still waiting for the tubing to arrive, to make the breather, and the rubbers/cushions, so that will hold up the tank installation.

I have both of the old tank cushions now I know, but they are bit tired, so I will fit new.

I think I have a good tank now. I am expecting to have to clean the filter again at some point, we will see.

I need to get some "local" miles on her now...... Local ?  cos I don't want to be a long way away if she decides to stop running..... :whistling: :P :rofl2:

Missus is going to moan, the house stinks of paint again....

The tank was reassembled as far as I could last night.
Today the new fuel tubes came, one was 8mm ID, the other 7.5 ID.
I put the 7.5 mm one on as the breather, and measured and fitted some of the 8mm for the tube that runs from the tank to the pump.
I didn't replace the main line to the rails as it appeared to be in very good condition.
I put some fuel in the tank prior to fitting to check for leaks.  No leaks !!
It was a bit of a faff to get all these tubes in the right place under the tank, so gently gently went D.D. until the tank sat naturally, without having to force the back end down. I replaced the rest of the fuel I had syphoned out, I used the missus's sieve just in case there was any crap in the fuel. I will have to buy her a new one ..LOL
No leaks !!
Another faff was getting the clip on the fuel line, back on the rail pipe, but we have plenty of patience here at Dibley Manor and it went on eventually, without breaking anything.
The new tank cushions went on.
Time to fire her up.
Fired first time and ran real good.  :boogie:

It was an easy fit, and a good fit. I was disappointed to find the link pipes were brushed not polished Tho.

I loosened everything up on the exhausts today, sprayed a little soapy water on the rubber bands behind the straps.

The straps weren't exactly round when they arrived.

Because everything had had time to settle down, I was then able to realign the silencers a bit better, and the lhs link pipe which has the the rubber cushion on it.

The cushion was missing the stand, and the stand had it's own cushion missing, hence the stand was hitting the link pipe.

At first I tried to source a cushion for the center stand.........£14.00...I like my solution better.   :mwink:

All is well now and looks way better from the back as well.   :clapping:

T 24 posted that he uses 0.5% two stoke oil in his fuel, I have heard it said before.

I am using STP regularly in my fuel.

0.5% is a ratio of 200 to 1, for 22 Litres, ie, 110ml is that correct ?

I have some Belray two stroke left over from flying 2 stroke planes, so I may as well try it as a rust inhibiter.

What do you guys reckon ?

I went out and filled her to the brim, as per other advice on here, and then gave her a little blast.
I didn't go mad, because I don't 100% trust the back tyre. It's a bit old and slippy.
However, there was no hesitation, no cutting out (like on the pre tank clean trip), but there was a twat who pulled out on me only 5 minutes in......luckily I could see it coming and was off the gas.
Being a keen cyclist I am used to it and I have a bar cam on the pushbikes. I think I need to adapt it for the big bikes as well.
Its an SJ4000 (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/193850243088?mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338956829&toolid=10049&customid=777_777_777) as seen here.

Ties in with another thread (re dashcams) as the batteries only last 90 mins but I have accumulated a fair few.

Ok Grog, you had me at this morning matey..... :coffeescreen:

When I looked at the tyres while they were tie wrapped together I saw this date.

Tyre Date 1.jpg

Ten years old..... FFS

So a load of researching and I found this, I will post it here as it is quite a good watch.

So I was happy to use the tyres......Anyway I split them and looked again, as the date is specified to be in an oval, and TaDah!!

I found this date on the inside edge, which is more like it, as the tyres were advertised as new, and I was about to phone the vendor.

So, to answer your question my good Friend, YES, they still make 'em. Thank Goodness, cos I am supposed, according to my Consultant, to avoid stress.   :rofl2:

@Dwain Dibley I have just been out to the garage and had a look at my tyres, these were fitted a couple of weeks ago and are the same Pirelli ST's, although mine are a bit older than yours 1722 both the front and the back have the other number exactly the same as on your tyres 001341 2012 with the same little lines. I suspect, although I may be wrong but this could be the code for the tread pattern or similar

Give it a good soak in penetrating fluid, shop bought or DIY 50/50 mix of automatic gearbox oil and acetone... then hit it with a decent rattle gun.

Both things worth having in the workshop.

My bmw front wheel was like that, supposed to be 50Nm. Standing on my breaker bar with an extension pipe on the handle did get it....eventually....after snapping my adapter.  The PO had lubed the axle nut with something, and being stored outside in a coastal village, some interesting chemical reactions with the alloy fork lever and steel axle  had frozen the nut.

Do it up slighty first & soak in penetrating fluid. You can get a bit of crud build up outside it & jam the threads, doing it up releases the pressure on that to flush it out with the spray & can free off any corosion too.

I'm happy for you HR, it was a trauma to sort. The worst place is the underside of the top, where the tank would have been dry/collecting condensation for a while.

New rubber being fitted tomorrow by me and son in law, so off with the wheels today.
I also gave the swing arm a good clean, the chain will be next and all the brake calipers.
I took the chain guard off to make things easier. I also measured the chain adjustment distance on both sides and it was out by a mm or two, even though the markings said not.
So the plan is to go round there spend some time with brand new grand daughter, and then do the tyres.

The caliper is supposed to be gold in colour, here it is after a quick wipe over.

The fronts are held up with tie wraps to stop them swinging about.

So after a big munch of my new Grand daughter Martha, we got stuck into the tyres.
It took about an hour to change both and balance them.
Liam had a new hack for lubing the rims, would you believe hair conditioner thinned with water ??
No salts like washing up liquid apparently. Works well anyway, and smells really nice too.   :rofl2:

D.D.

When I got home I masked the discs and painted them, touched in the wheels where they were dinked, and also painted the wheel weights.

So with the other side of the front discs painted and the wheel cleaned up, it was time to get them back on the bike.
I pulled the rear pads out of the caliper and gave it a good clean again and made sure the pads were OK. I cleaned the pin up and made sure it would not seize.
With the Abba skylift it is easy to get the wheel and swingarm lined up to slot the spindle in, I cleaned all the spacers and the caliper hanger.
The chain cleaned up well, no tight spots, and once lubed up looked good.

Crewie.

Loads of crap came off the chain, the Kerosene was yellow.

I started on the front brakes clean and wheel reassembly, but I got visited so many times, (read interrupted), that I never got finished. I will get the wheel in today.
I had already spent the morning getting my bicycle repair shop ready.
The calipers cleaned up well, and the pads were still reasonable, so I refitted those.
I thought that the pad retainers were painted black, until I wiped them with a rag.  :rofl2:
I don't think this bike saw a lot of cleaning in it's previous ownership, apart from the shiny bits, and even then it was just cursory.

In addition to the fork seals .......

I had to fill the tank the other day and to my dismay, it seems that the dreaded rust has returned somewhat, not as bad as before but enough to piss me off.
I have decided to go down the molasses route, as this seems to be the cheapest and most recommended way, with people reporting good results (including Allen Millyard et al).
5 Lt of molasses for less than a tenner. It just takes longer, but patience is free.
The only tedious part of this is making the tank watertight underneath, as I want it to be upright when I fill it. I don't think it would be prudent to leave the pump and sender in there.  :whistling:
The alternative is to half fill and rotate daily.

I went out on the 14 today with a mate to give his bike a shake down ride, we did about 20 miles or so, on open roads and round town. She performed beautifully, only one niggle, an intermittent nearside brake light fault. This seemed to be a loose wire, as it was happening over speed bumps etc.

The 14 ran great but the fork seal leak was present still, so that will need to be addressed ASAP.

We called in at my mate's Daughters house for a cup of tea, and while we were there, there was a knock at the door. It was a bloke riding a beat up old CB400 Super Dream, asking if we had any spares for a CX500, so if the Guy phones, it looks like we have sold some mufflers and a CDI unit.....BONUS !! :boogie:

So we attacked the fork seals today, straight forward until we had to crack the bottom damper cartridge bolt. Liam had to go back home and get his battery powered impact driver, which thankfully did the job. after that it was plain sailing. I built it all back up and got the wheel in. I took the little helper (Grandson) to the shop for some treats, and while I was gone Liam found that the adjusters on the top of the top bolt assembly were not equal, one had the full 18 clicks the other only had 7. So off they came, we dropped the forks thru the clamps and adjusted the lock nuts to their proper distance, thereby reinstating the correct amount of adjustment. both set at 8 clicks as per the manual.
An enjoyable half a day in the sunshine with lots of tea.

Top tip - crack that allen bolt at the bottom before you strip the forks. The pressure from the spring holds everything in place & makes it much more likely to just come undone.

Went out today on the 14, on a round robin to test out the new seals. They got a good test, cos the roads round here are full of pot holes and speed humps.  :computer_type:

Ended up at Son in laws, just to check in and tell him the job was a good un, and the seals were fine. It had rained on the way there, and when I had parked up I noticed an oil rainbow under the bike on the RHS. Oil was weeping from the Oil pressure switch.
So hopefully that will just be a simple tweak or a new seal washer.

I suspect you mean the fan switch. RH side, in front of the silver cover low down on the front of the engine & a single wire going backwards along the frame tube off it?

From memory the oil pressure switch is inside that engine cover so can't be seen.

Thanks for the info Hoolie.   :smitten:

As it turns out on closer inspection, the leak was from the timing rotor cover. None of the bolts were very tight, the bottom two were loose, or as near as dammit. I torqued them up to 11 NM as per manual and all good.

D.D.

red = oil leak. Blue = no oil.

Didn't your S.I.L do all the spannering on your bike? I'd suggest a sharp rap on the knuckles with a size 22 ring spanner to remind him to check all bolts he's touched...

Neither of us had touched that cover Eric, so cannot blame him, plus he has 5 bikes and is a meticulous mechanic. The only people who could have opened the cover, are the P.O. and the place I bought the bike from.

I have torqued the bolts up to 11 Nm as per the manual and all good.

Went for a blast to test the bike and my new boots today, the bike had no oil leak and the boots were comfy.

Awesome, good to read that mate. Comfy boots makes all the difference, glad you've got no oil leaks.

MOT Day today, can you believe it's been the wettest most miserable day this week....it was sunny yesterday..

What a piss take, the bike is filthy.

She got a shiny new MOT tho, so was way faster on the way back home...  :coffeescreen:

Well the sun is going to shine again tomorrow (Saturday), so I'll be taking my GSX out somewhere - drop me a PM if you fancy a run out.

Pete.

Gave the old girl a wash with the Mucoff sno-foam and pressure washer,in between showers.
This little pressure washer has 3 nozzles, including one for motorcycles and one for pushbikes, with less powerful jets.
I washed her once and dried her 3 times.
Did you get out Pete ?

Back end of next week is looking promising at the moment, so looking forward to setting off again.
