Title: New battery given up
Post by: seth on Sunday, 25 April 2021, 06:48 AM
Looks like my new battery has given up .
Very sluggish starting and clock resting after it does start.
I've checked all the normal stuff plugs, connectors and switches .
Runs great just slow starting .
Put in the spare 15 year old battery fires right up no hassle or hesitation.
The battery is a yuasa and  just over the year for the warranty.
The bike ran less last year than it ever has and stood longer than it normally would but not much more than before .
Can batteries be so much more rubbish than years ago ?
I'm going to run the bike with emma's battery to double check it's not the bike .
Anyone else got any ideas on what to else up check ?

Not of good news today
Took the 15month old battery back to Halfords in Perth Scotland this morning and much to my surprise they are going to replace it .
New one should be here on Friday.
Hopefully all will be ok after that .

Its worth noting @seth  that Yuasa do a heavy duty version of the YTX14-BS battery - aptly named YTX14H-BS - I've recently put one in my BMW GS and find it spins over about 15-20% quicker and seems to charge a bit easier - certainly it works a bit better on colder mornings.

A replacement is a result Seth. Just make sure that they give you a NEW warranty and not backdate it to the original (faulty) battery purchase date. Sometimes this happens with replacement goods.

Sure its not the generator and rectifier playing up and draining the battery?

DP, in Oz wrty on replacement item is either until end of original wrty or 6 months, whichever is longer. Aust consumer law.

Good news Seth
My 'new' YTX14H lasted 15 months - the supplier will not replace it as again its only a year warranty - I complained to Yuasa but they couldn't give a rat's ass!
I bout a new one (CAN$114)- just waiting for it now

I don't know what Yuasa are doing in their battery lineup know.
In the 80's and 90's I used to buy Yuasa Yumicron batteries which were always prefixed YB in their part number.
These cost more than the standard battery, but had more cranking power and lasted longer.
Well around 2000 they turned to shit and wouldn't last so I started buying batteries from a battery place which has been rebranded many times but is now Enirgi Power Storage.
Their batteries work well and last.
This doesn't help you guys overseas. All I can say is find another battery other than Yuasa.

Coincides with most of the worlds manufacturing shifting to LCC (low cost centres), i.e SE Asia, India and China, so the QA/QC learning  curve started at the bottom at that time.

Hooli, 😂😂. Back to battery. I gave up on brand names, 3 in 3 yrs. were so called best. Cheap Chinesium AGM going well. Next time will be Lithium. Had a $400 version in Diavel, was brilliant. Could leave for weeks, always started. Just checked same for 14, now just $200. That will be my choice.

This battery talk has jinxed me. Stopped to check the mailbox this afternoon, go to restart, nothing.
It's a long push from the front of my place to the shed.
Battery was put in the bike by the local Suzuki dealer just before I bought it, October last year.
8 months and shot.
I'll call the dealer and see if they honour the 12 month warranty.
It is a SSB V Spec 4-VTX14-BS.

I jumped the gun on the battery. Seams I was running a total loss system.
I charged the battery overnight and it came up fine and even passed the headlight on for 3 min test.
Checked gen output, 80v on each of the 3 wires.
Reg/rec the problem. Actually on the feel test it was really hot.
What are the Chinese ones like from Ebay? I haven't rung the dealer yet for a genuine price.
On Ebay only one for a 1400, but a few for the XVS1100 and found this one

This is a bit wordy, but gives a cheap and easy replacement for the factory unit and who knows they may come out of the same factory that produces units for all bikes and outboards.
Ebay regulator rectifier fitted. It works fine, charges into the 14V range from about 3,000 revs, no specifics here, I watched the tach and read the multimeter. I'll see how this one lasts.
I went for a ride and felt the unit, it was quite warm to touch, but I have only felt the one I took of and it was similar.
The original one worked cold, but after a ride and it warmed up it stopped working.
By the way the Maroochydore Suzuki dealer wants $150 for a factory one and $60 to $100 for an aftermarket one (same ones as Ebay).
He said bring in your old one and we will find one that looks similar.
I had a marine shop check my old one just to be sure as my multimeter doesn't go into the test range on diode test. He has better equipment and smarts than the dealers around here.
He said it looks like a Yamaha marine one and also said regardless of outside shape they are all the same internally.
If you look in the application guides in the ads they all list various bikes they fit. The more common ones across all ads are XVS1100, YZFR6, Z1000, DL1000 and some even GSX1400, but not on the US sites obviously.
I probably would be happier with the larger style like the factory one.
It may have heavier internals or just the larger heat sink area.
Interchange guide below, it could be more extensive. GSX1400 part number at the bottom.

SFC, been checking this stuff out. I want Lithium battery next. Some say a MOFSET regulator required, not as cheap as yours, $300.  Charge rate needs to be 14 or below for them. So then i read, battery lithium with Battery Monitor System fitted, any reg works. All so confusing. Diavel i had, fitted Lithium batt, no dramas. Reckon the $249 batt with BMS is the go. Your thoughts?

Yep, +1 for this battery, it has the BMS integrated into the battery, so all good.

@grog The more I read about lithium the more I like them and will probably go down that road myself when my batteries need replacing.
BMS in the battery is a must.
I see SSB do lithium, but no mention of BMS in their ads, though a phone call would sort this out.
Ultrabatt look to be the main choice and the UB12400MM looks to be the one to use.
If you stored a bike or needed to charge a lithium it looks like you would be up for a suitable battery charger. I read somewhere don't use a charger that has the anti sulfate option as lithium batteries don't like it.
I did come across these guys who do aircraft and bikes and make a couple of good points in the motorcycle section.
Trouble is you would have to take a second mortgage to buy their batteries.

Earth batts cost the Earth, $800 or so. Will ring SSB about BMS. Not mentioned on their site. I left Diavel 3 mths once, started no prob. Think i read that a good run will bring them straight back up. My Projecta jump pack, 1500cca, recharges in no time. 45 secs i think it says but sometimes a bit more. We have Lith charger at work, hardly gets used.

Mate fitted SSB lithium to his MT10 yesterday. Doesnt have BMS, sort of worries me. Agent for Superstart said hes sold lots, never a problem. Will see how it goes. $185, good price. Think its maybe a size smaller than 14 battery, not sure.

I received an email from Itechworld yesterday saying they are now doing lithium bike batteries.

I have one of their iTECH2000A portable jump starters and it's a real good bit of kit.
If you subscribe to them they have various specials up to half off, that's when I bought the jump starter.

Here is the blurb below from the email.

The all new Lithium Motorbike Cranking Batteries!
Before we tell you why you shouldn't use a lead-acid battery in your motorbike, let us take a moment to acknowledge this antiquated battery types achievements. Lead-acid batteries first arrived on the scene in 1859 and since then have been synonymous with just about every petrol-powered motor vehicle on the planet. Cheap to make, moderately reliable, but heavy with a short lifespan. Unless you have a super modern high-performance motorbike, chances are, your motorbike came with a lead-acid battery straight from the factory.

Lithium batteries are relatively new on the scene; however, iTechworld lithium batteries have developed impressively quickly and are now on the cusp of replacing the lead-acid monopoly. Some motorbike riders are asking:

"Why we would want to mess with a good thing?"

Our reply is, how good is the good thing? Lead-acid batteries have some significant flaws:
1.   They are heavy.
2.   They are made of lead, which is terrible for the environment if not recycled.
3.   Lead-acid batteries are limited in their charge cycles compared to lithium batteries.
4.   Lead-acid batteries have a self-discharge rate of 1% or higher in hot conditions. Good luck up north!

With the flaws of lead-acid cranking batteries ringing in our ears, we have designed our lithium cranking batteries to address all issues mentioned above.

When you think of lithium, you think of weight savings, and that is certainly true with our new range of motorbike cranking batteries; our 600CCA battery weighs just 1.8kg, yes! You did read that correctly, 1.8kg. The equivalent lead acid motorbike battery will weigh upwards of 10kg. Getting a considerable weight saving is excellent, but that is just the tip of the iceberg with iTechworld lithium cranking batteries. Arguably, the most significant element in favour of iTechworld lithium motorbike batteries is that they have a much more formidable energy density than their lead-acid cousins. That signifies that iTechworld lithium motorbike batteries put out higher cranking amps per unit of weight. So, suppose you invest in an iTechworld high-quality drop-in replacement for your OEM battery. In that case, you will get added cranking amps with a similar amp hour rating to the original one – all with the aforementioned weight savings.

Lead-acid batteries have a charge cycle lifespan of approx. 500 cycles. A cycle is measured as one full discharge and then recharge; iTechworld lithium cranking batteries are designed for cycling up to 2000 times. Even after the 2000 cycles have passed, the battery will still be operational. There is nothing worse than starting the motorbike, and nothing happens; the battery is flat; remember the self-discharge rate of lead-acid batteries we mentioned earlier? Our lithium cranking batteries negate the flat battery issues as they have little to no self-discharge rate compared to lead-acid batteries.

Operating at a higher voltage than their lead-acid counterparts, iTechworld lithium cranking batteries produce 13.2 volts, delivering better performance to all the voltage-dependent systems on a motorbike, from the starter motor windings to the coils to the injectors. With the more reliable voltage endurance and slightly higher voltage delivered by iTechworld lithium batteries, you get a motorbike that is easier to tune and makes more horsepower.

SFC, will keep the $145 job in mind for next time.
