Anyone have thoughts on a bike to park beside 14? A newer model i mean. I have one choice but will wait for your ideas.
SuperDuke, something that is different.
BMW R1250GS/GSA or Triumph Tiger 1200
Both of these many in the past have gravitated to after owning a 14.

Irish is on the right track. For me it would have to match the 1400s grunt. Less weight would be good especially for us more senior members. I would prefer simplicity for maintenance - so no belts or tricky valves trains.
My heart says Moto Guzzi or KTM but my head says Vstrom 650.
BMW R1200r for second hand, more power, more grunt, less weight, shaft drive and easy to service. For new a BMW R1250r, even more power and grunt with all the other advantages. I have a 1200 and think it's the best real world bike I own and has amazing economy.
Diavel first choice, power, lowish seat - second choice a BMW R1200r if the seat was a lot lower :)

Guess not, as the 14 would be too envious :stir:
Something by Hardly Ableson for lazy days out just being noisey & not getting anywhere. It'll never happen until they cut the prices by about 75% so they are worth the money though, but then the same is true of any new bike.
I wouldn't want any new bikes, if anything was next to my 14 it would have to be a street fighter that I have in my head and a modern version of a cafe racer my dad rode as a nod to him.( Got to win the lottery first though :rofl2:). As nod to my courier days a Yamaha 900 diversion (2nd gen), to run around on picking up bits and pieces I may need from time to time.
At present a z900rs sits one side of my 14,,the other side is a 650 v strom,,then I have an r1 and a gsxr 1000 ,but to be fair I don't ride the latter,just ornaments I suppose,..
Seeing as mjgt mentioned a BMW l had a quick look. Think l could live with a R1250RS...... and lucky me, they are only $31,890.00.
Thats only $31,890 more than management has budgeted for a a new bike. Looks nice though.
Interested in the new V4 non desmo multistrada, I have pissed around with enough Desmo heads to last me the rest of my life, will have to have as decent ride on one first though
A newer model? No sorry, it would be an old Stroker, have 3 cylinders, and have Kawasaki or Suzuki written on the tank. Failing that, a nice RG500 would do quite nicely :)
Y`see, I`ve often had several bikes in the past at the same time, and quite honestly, in my experience they have to be radically different from each other otherwise they just don`t get ridden - the `favourite one` always gets used, and the rest just deteriorate! No point whatsoever owning more than two bikes for that very reason unless of course, wealth permits a serious collection of favourite bikes kept in a warm room etc. etc., to be called `a collection`!

So true, I had 5 at one time back in the day and It caused anxiety as to which one to use for a particular ride and every time I always felt at some stage that I had made the wrong choice, ended up pairing it down to 1 race bike 851, one ride with the boys bike 750 gt and one commuter/ Tourer K100

Just get an LC350 and kick the arse of the lot of them.
My wish list would be Speed Triple RS on one side, Duc Panigale 1299 on the other, the latter just for bling
BMW R1200GSA for me 😉
Moto Guzzi - either a current California or a Stelvio NTX - depending what mood I was in on the day.

Very nice, got your bases covered there. :onya:
So i started this. Ridden lots of BMW, MV, Triumph, All the MT range. Never tried KTM. Ducati dont offer test rides, told me to scrap 14 as its worthless as a trade. Fuckers. Tried 2 Guzzi, not a favourite. Rode mates 1200 thruxton, not impressed and lots of heat coming up, exhausts i think. Mates MT10 is awesome, just butt ugly. Chews petrol, 98, worse than a 2 stroke Kawasaki. 180ks range.Rocket is unreal, just too heavy. All Adventure bikes are too tall for me.So, i found one i really like. Sit in it with low seat, can read gauges, LCD,good fuel mileage, stops n goes incredibly. Needs all adjustments we are familiar with, TPS etc. Handles so nicely, price is good. Not a pillion bike but just me for a blast. No bells or whistles. Rode one 5 yrs ago, snatchy throttle put me off, now not at all. Amazing old motor, sounds good, stretches arms. GSX1000S.
I ride a BMW R1200 as well, wonder what sort of tyres you adventure boy's are using.

Quite right Irish - I had a new White/Red one back in the day, super quick for a mere 350. Didn`t keep it long though, felt tiny and sounded typically `bland` like `stroker twins do. In contrast, my `72 H1B was alarmingly quick, reliable, extremely lively and a total joy to ride. It was without doubt, for me, the best sounding bike ever made. I`m sure half the mileage I did on it was so that I could listen to it!
So, likely as not, the H1B (or any H2) would be my `14`s stablemate of choice. A brilliant contrast of firepower and each would get used for specific purposes. Perfect :onya:

Mines the GS 1250 rather than the GSA 1250 - so more road than adventure based. For me I like both the Michelin PR5 Trail and the Metzeler Roadtec 01's (although I hear an 02 is coming out), the GSA boys seem to like the Michelin Anakee's
DP, you wouldve liked my H1B. I fitted 550 Suzi pistons, think that made it 530cc from memory. Ports opened, expansion chambers. You know how fast standard, it became totally unbelievable after those mods. Had no torque at all, no power until 4500 revs, a bit until 6k,then just went ballistic. Riding hard did 10 mpg. I enjoyed it totally.
@gsxbarmy PR5 Trail here, and I don't know any different only tyres I've ever ridden it with, don't go off road incase it gets dirty.
I'd be thinking when it's time for a new smaller lighter bike I'd probably go for a triumph tiger 900 .
But I feel thats hopefully a long way off .
As you know I have had to sell my 14. I have went for a smaller lighter bike and have purchased a 2015 BMW 1000r. Happy with it so far.

Metzeler Tourance Next for me ;)
Yoda, reckon you should be, 160 or so bhp, have ridden with 2. They do lots of things so right. Bloody fast.
24kilos lighter is a real plus 👍makes manoeuvring a lot easier on my hands. I am sad about selling my 14 but just not ready to give up biking yet. :onya:
I like the K1600 BMW as a second bike, it makes the GSX1400 feel light.
I've got a mate with one of them, they can bloody shift with a good rider onboard. You're right about heavy though, he dropped it in france & I picked it up as he couldn't.

You know, I thought you were going to say he dropped the bike in France and you felt it hit the ground in Britain.
I've also an insane hankering for a DR650. :frustrated:

I have a DR350 which I only ever used off road, one day I followed a guy on a 650 on the Bucketts Way from Gloucester to Taree he was doing over 170 kph in parts, seen guy's touring on them and sitting at 120 easy.

Just do it Mike - they're a heap of fun and cheap as chips! If I could have only one bike, it'd be a DR650! :onya:
Mate bought a new DR650 and rode it from one side of the US to the other, along many back roads and trails. He had nothing but praise for it.
@black14 My 350 is the same style it's 1991 and been trashed in the bush still going strong, when I get back to Oz it will be going on Club Plates, thirty years old.
Any of the DRs are great bikes in my opinion. Not the best at anything but can do pretty much everything.
My little jaunt round Aus 2019 - I'm thinking might have been a bit more of a challenge in 2020...

Sure, can you convince my wife because there's no way in hell I can. She no longer thinks I should have one bike let alone more than one... Something boring about paying more off the mortgage now she's nearing retirement age.
Retirement or trade in Vlad ??
Depends if she can read this or not.... :whistling:
Let's play it safe.... The former.

I'm looking at an adventure bike ATM, a couple of mates want to do some outback travels next year.
I never EVER thought these words would come from my mouth, but I've been looking at BMW boxers ( fuck me, that almost hurt).

Trust me you won't regret it, they are 100% cracking bikes, having owned one now for over 6 months and prior to that a Triumph Explorer 1200 for 3.5 years, I can honestly say that my R1250GS is absolutely the best bike I have ever owned, super comfortable and immaculate handling - a great bike to tour on.
Get a Guzzi Stelvio NTX. :D
Convert, 1250 Adventure BMW, nearly 30g, would want to be good. Not what id choose. That red dust sure wont keep its resale value. Guess it depends how much highway versus sand/ gravel in your plans.

Got a mate up your way that has had a couple of them, pretty sure he's still got one. PM me your phone number. I'll see if he will give you call.
The R1250GS is just over $36k on road here, lotta coin.

Not a dissimilar price in the U.K. Col, hence why I bought mine one year old and saved a chunk of money on new.

I agree with Grog. How much off road and in particular how much sand is a big issue. The big GS is a great touring bike and will handle gravel roads well but if your going into the desert then weight is your biggest enemy. Also depends on what your mates are riding as well.
Lots of YouTube stuff on outback travel. Have a look at Darryl Beatties videos. There is a new one on the Canning Stock route. Kevin Swartz was on this trip.
The lightest bike with the biggest motor can be a good choice. 600 and 650 singles with big tanks are popular. depends whether your budget can manage a single purpose machine.

Many new top of the range motorcycles across most makes are getting to be eye watering prices these days whatever you choose. So to a large extent are cars, which even bottom of the range getting to be quite pricey, let alone top of the range.
In terms of "at today's prices", the GS is a good investment for that type of motorcycle and has a good second hand value, against others of the same type.
On my GS I saved quite a bit buying a one year old model, which is still holding its value well.
For the desert rides the big ones just too heavy. Mate has done it, setting up to go again. DRZ400 his choice. Others he recos are KTM350 and KLR650. Im no expert, have looked into b4. My choice as a do anywhere allrounder outback, KLR. Suspension upgrade is about all they mention as necessary. Huge fuel range, reliable, dont break much when they fall over. Gets my ticks.
I don't mind the look of the Triumph Thruxton R.
Haven't seen one in person and don't know what they are like in the real world.
Somewhat old school cafe racer and should be enjoyable to take for a run.
SFC, my mate has a 1200. Had a ride. Superb quality, rides nicely. Does all the good things perfectly. Biggest prob is the heat off motor/ exhaust. Just no good for our climate. Im not sure why it happens, just a narrow 2 cylinder. Compared to 14, which i find gives off bugger all heat, far bigger motor, never a prob, its just sauna stuff on Trump. I really wanted one but turned me off. Bonnies dont seem to have same prob, think its because youre laying over top of motor on Thruxton.
Ural Ranger for me
