Has anyone fitted a oil drain tap and done away with the drain plug. Thinking of doing this, what stops the tap from undoing accidentally, does it protrude into the sump stopping the oil completely draining and does it hang very low. Would appreciate your opinion on this. And can you recommend a good one. Thanks nick.
I bought one to fit years ago, but never used it as it hung down too low. I sold it.
I'm sure someone on here fitted one and it caught when he was going down over a kerb and it destroyed his sump.
I can't see the point, it's hardly difficult to remove & refit the sump plug.
Hasn't Ugly Col or Fat Col fitted one? :whistling:
Fumoto on mine a long time. I like it.

I'm not sure which one I am (or both?)
I had one a few years ago. Great bit of kit, as long as you stick to sealed roads & don't go over any 'large' bumps or deep pot holes as this bit becomes the lowest point under the bike, not by much, but it's the lowest bit, making it the first point of contact under the bike, with catastrophic results. Hit this plug while moving forward (even slow speed) & it'll smash out of your sump. Big hole, all the oil comes out, all over the rear tyre (ya wanna be going slow else - ) new sump required & a transport home.
Not the end of the world, but ya can do without this happening, especially when you're several hundred miles from home on an unsealed road with no cell phone coverage.
Ask me how I know this . . .
Quite a few years back Bov had one on his bike, ready to travel from Brisbane to Jindabyne for MCR and I think he was lucky it happened in Brisbane, he made it to the rally in his car.
Mike brought Bov's bike & he knocked a hole in his sump going over a big speed bump in the car park. I recall the pic's, & vividly recall my own incident.
Col
Mike and Bov are the same person.
Vlad=Mike=Bov?
Think you have all answered my questions, going to leave well alone. I change the oil once a year normally so its not worth the risk. Plus a lot of my riding is two up. Thanks nick.
I put a Fumoto on years ago. Not lower than exhaust. Remove spring clip, open valve & oil is out.
I too never had an issue with the Fumoto I had fitted to my K7 (the one I had didn't have the additional small pipe underneath)
Guys that seem to have issues with the Fumoto seem all to have been down under, whether the kerbs or road humps are larger than the UK, this they may catch who knows, but I can't recall anyone having an issue in the UK at all with them. WHich doesn't mean they haven't, just that I can't recall having heard of anyone.
As Barmy said, just make sure you get this one without the sleeve to attach a hose. Done 40,000 kms with one attached in Australia and never a problem. But for once a year changes, it's not a big issue (unless you over tighten and strip the sump thread) think that has been an issue for some ?

Everthing is bigger in Australia even the potholes.

Umm, that appears to have 2 outlets - one for the sump, one for the drain and another one... ?
Nah, that's just the mechanism. Only an in & out through flow, you should know, you had one that fell out.
That was the stock plug mate not a fancy valve thing.
And it didn't 'fall' as you know :)

Yeah, I recall a vision very similar to that myself. :happy1:

Well I did another oil change tonight & I still can't see any use for these quick drain things.

I don't see the point only time I have is when the complete system is changed and pipe is covering the drain, had this on a GPZ900R with a Kerker complete system obviously made for performance reasons and not maintenance taken into consideration. Does sound great but you guessed it, it's hanging in the shed.

Nope several years ago.
God, was a while ago, think it were around NZ$275 or so. Had to import from Japan. Ended up getting a good 2nd hand off a wrecked K7 for $150 I think it was. Still have the original 'repaired' one as an emergency backup, or it'll end up as decoration in the cave.

You hang up sumps, and I hang up wheels.

How much is a sump worth ? :whatever:
Too much, but also took ages to get one in stock at the dealer and no wreckers had any at the time.
My recommendation? Don't damage your sump. :)
thread pitch oil drain cap is M14x1,25
Since this thread is alive again, I'll add my two cents. Also put a Fumoto on, thought I'd try it after seeing some were stripping their threads. Been on there for many years now with no issue, exhaust is lower anyway so that wears the brunt of any speed hump rash. I was paranoid about the tap flicking on somehow so tie wired it. Dunno if it's worth it, but I like it now it's there (convenience/lazyness) and don't need to chase crush washers or torque it.
Endless, i agree with all that 👍Not sure how many sump plugs i undid in my working life, not difficult for sure but fumoto i like.Worms might crawl out of can 😂
I consider it very dangerous given the low height of the oil pan, in addition to not being protected by an escape line that stands out more. when 4 to one line
Not really a problem Mate, others have ripped stock sump plugs off. Be aware, all thats needed to be said.
I can remember when . . . :happy1: :onya:
Its one of those each to their own things, I guess. Heard of more people stripping threads than anyone having an issue with the tap. Pry that can a bit harder.. :stir:
The first thing I do/did with every bike I bought was to drill the sump plug at the first oil change. When replacing the plug it was just nipped up and lock wired. The only time I ever thought I'd strip a thread was when I used a torque wrench for the factory setting. Way too bloody tight in my opinion so I stopped well short of what Suzuki recommend
I've no idea how so many people strip sump threads, maybe they don't wipe them clean as you can get bits of rubbish from the old oil in there & that'd damage the thread as you replace the plug.
