Tonight I got home just before darkness and fitted the brackets and the LED's I have told you about..
I temporarily wired them up as I had said (to the horn live and an earth point... The horn mounting nut)..
They work very well indeed..
The photo doesnt show how bright these things are.. Maybe the camera cant cope!!
Look at how much whiter they are than the headlight.. The headlight has an Osram Night breaker in by the way !
Looking at the effect of the LED's I would say that I am going to stick to my guns in that the oil cooler radiator cover is a better place than next to the horns..
My way means the LED's are further apart !
1st Photo shows the little corner brackets i used...
2nd and 3rd photo shows them in action as the light fades..
I am very pleased overall.
I fitted them within 20 minutes !!
But as I said in my other post I had pre tinned the very thin wires on the LED's.
S.
The wires need shortening by about a foot then it will be a neater installation. I will do that tomorrow morning.
that looks the business fella :onya: :onya:
might have a look at something similar as Im having to use the 14 to commute as the bandit and the ZRX are suffering from me taking them to bits
Del
Thanks Del..
Very easy to do and it does no damage to the bike at all.
They can be removed in 5 mins if needed.
Looks like you should stand out a lot better now. :onya:
impressive Simon - did it affect the working of the horns ? :clapping:
Notty..
the horns work as normal.
Just remember NOT to use the earth wire on the horn.
I clamped the LED's earth wire between the horn mounting plate and the frame where the mounting plate fits.
The live wire from the LED I trapped into the live spade connection on the horn.
That live wire is live when the ignition is on.
I suspect the horn works by the horn button connecting the horn to earth.
Nice work Speedy and thanks for the info on your wiring - I have ordered a set of small LED's and am going to do something similar :onya:
Speedy , had a look today. Will follow you and mount to oil cooler.
Hi speedy
I was looking at this to so now I've seen them yes I will go and do it ,I will post a pic of my headlight hid system I fitted at a low price and they work so good. In fact a wow is all I can say and so easy to wire and the ballist unit fits in the headlight unit ,and it is brilliant white lot match your side lights ,they go together well ,, I will post pic this weekend to show the unit and the light working , :onya:
Mrg..
Dont suppose you have a link to the HID kit you fitted do you?
S.
Just to help you with your decisions for mounting the LED DRL's I have a couple more photos of the bracket I used...
Actually looks better with the LED in place..
will get a couple of brackets monday.
Hi speedy
Yes I will put a link in the post with the picture mate off the top of my head it cost me from flea bay about 48 pounds and works a treat
Moved to tech
Seeing as you blokes are fitting LED Daytime Running Lights thought I should fit mine. They are quite small and don't look that bright but they are.
Thanks for the wiring tips gents :onya:
Have some red ones that I'm thinking of putting into the rear brake light circuit. Just got to decide where and how to mount them.
Nice one Kiwi..
As you say in reality they are brighter than the camera makes them appear.
S.
Fitted these to my oil cooler cover - just enough clearance ! one LED is brighter than the other - it may be the earth I used on the nearside so will rewire to use the same earth and positive as the other to check the if its the LED or the prat who wired them ! :smile2:
Rode home in the dark last evening. LED's are certainly bright.
Should i get a dozen more to Pimp my Ride :whistling: ........maybe not !!
kiwi, go for it. some blue under lights as well. very hip.
Seen a couple of bikes at night in town with their "park lights" on. Very pretty !!!! :boring:
Now....before i forget.
I have piggy backed onto what I thought was the power side of the horns. I have bared and soldered a loop on eath lead and put horn mount bolt through it. So now when I use the horn the LED's go out. Which, to be honest I dont mind. But why does it do this ??
Voltage drop when the horns are used? Most LEDs don't 'dim' they just go off when the voltage lowers.
What's the current draw on your LEDs? shouldn't be much, you could try running them off the front sidelight feed & that should cure it.
Ahem.....
you err did test which was the + wire before soldering didnt you ?
Actually I take that back..
Before I come out with sarcy comments I better test mine dont dim/go out!
Both wheels are off my bike at the moment so I will test when I think the neighbours dont mind.
Some times I think I am too "nice"
Thanks Hooli. :onya: Sounds fair. They come straight back on as soon as i let the horn button go. As i said i dont mind because its kinda like flasing them.
Shouldn't be a big problem anyway KF. Not very often the horn gets used, well not mine anyway.

Funny I seem to remember saying some comments back about checking what happens when you press the horn button..... :whistling:

sorted - same brightness and the horns work but led's do go out when horn pressed but Highway code says flashing lights are a warning ! and I can't remember pressing them anyway cos they hear me coming! :smile2:

Seeing as we are talking horns......
Yesterday I'm in my van and coming out of a service lane. I need to cross two lanes of stationary traffic to get into the third lane from which I can turn right at the lights. The lights are red. In front of me is a gap just wide enough for me to get through and out to the far lane. So I move forward.
Well....... this old Doris in a car with four rings on the name plate, LED DRL's and a horn is having some sort of apoplectic fit behind the steering wheel.
I look to my left in time to see the lights change to green. Still with ten cars to move before she can I decide to stop, wind down my window and politely ask "Is the something you'd like to say sweetheart ?"
Apparently not.....but her arms are now flailing around above the steering wheel.
I slowly move forward and into the third lane, the car in front of her has still not moved.......
We share the roads with drivers like that. If she had been on her cell phone she would never have known.
Probably late for her next Botox treatment..... Impatient cow !!
lights arrived, 23mm jobs. sure are tiny wires.
My wires were tiny also.
Finally got around to honking my horn to see if the LED's go out..
They do NOT !!
My LED's stay lit regardless of the Horn operation.
:)

Hi Simon -which side of the horn did you take the supply from ? cos mine go out ( :bugga: ) when i sound the horn - I took the earth from the horn mounting bracket :smile2:

Hi Notty,
I earthed the horn through the mounting bracket as you have done..
But I used a volt meter independently to make sure i got the Positive connector to the horn..
On my particular bike, if I remember correctly the positives were nearest the frame (inboard).

ahhhh I used the outboard connectors as tooooo lazy to get my voltmeter out - sort that today
thanks Simon :smile2:
Speedy , do i just solder those tiny wires to double spade connector and earth to eyelet. they seem so fragile, the wires. heat shrink?
Looks like i used the wrong wire. Thought it had a blue trace. Thinking the earth was the other one....... :bugga:

Hi Notty..
I will be honest I was semi lazy..
I say semi because I did "tin" the wires that come from the LED with solder to beef them up a bit.
I then trapped the earth wire from the LED under the mounting bracket and tightened it firmly..
The positive from the LED I threaded through the original spade on the horn and then pushed firmly the spade connector from the horn over it..
The fact that its tinned with lead solder and the tightness of the fit of the spade connector means there are no issues with a bad connection.
The plus side is that the LED's can be removed very easily if needed and leave no trace of having been fitted.
If I ever go down the LED H4 headlight bulb then by all accounts they are exceptionally bright and attract the attention of even the most dim witted car driver !
Just finished putting it on bike. Took pics on sunny day. They are bright! :boogie:
Wired in front position light so leds are on only when lights are on.
Very neet indeed

Had a look at my power supply from horn, had from wrong side. Yes i have a ticket from trade school for auto electrics. Lazy i guess. My voltmeter on wrong side also, often wondered why only charging 13.5, now 14. What a dickhead.
I love those neat little brackets on the horns. I might copy that idea, DRLs are a good thing in my humble opinion.
My DRL. Notice the difference in bright daylight, when you are not looking bike from straight front of.
Nice t24, I've been looking at doing the exact same thing. Good to see someone has already done it :onya:
So realistically in daylight... makes no real difference to visibility I reckon.
Be very handy to have extra light at night though.
Picture cant tell all. It really is much brighter in daylight (ok, its illegal 18w), most pics here are taken in dark.
But in night time you do nothing with that led-toy, It is bright yes, but it has no light figure at all.
I still don't know, is does it make better visibility against those semi-blind car drivers :smile2:

You'd be surprised Mike. I had one mounted similar to T24 on my 14 which had a slight "glitter"effect to it, and you could see car drivers do a double take when you were behind them. Other bikes also said it was noticeable, more I think because it broke up the "standard" outline.
So personally I think it made a difference.
Bugger I was hoping it would be good for night time. Do you think a higher wattage bar would make a difference?

Higher wattage and decent reflectors should work OK, but those cheap china toys are just for attention.
For daylight riding only.
Yes there is a big difference between DRL's and properly designed LED lightbars which are designed fro area illumination, that's quite true.
I have a bike with LED light similar to above but thought the LED got lost amonst the headlight glare. Personally l prefer a triangle of lights, headlamp and two LEDs.
I also say any lights are better than just the headlight.
We must have headlamp hard wired on at all times.
Yeah us too,
Which is great in theory UNTIL you are driving with the sun behind you, and that makes you HARDER to be seen by oncoming traffic as it breaks up your silhouette.
Bloody government geniuses....
Big problem now is that everything has bloody lights on it, cars, bikes, busses and lorries so they just blend in together. I don't run any lights on my bikes (except my beemer but that has a DRL only) and have not any problems with cars pulling out on me.
If you buy a cheap junk you will get a cheap junk. My chinese toy led bar lasted just a one week!
At first died three leds, then the rest three started blinking and now they are all dead.
