Sounds like a winner, I've not got even half that... just over 51,500 miles -  and not all by me...

@RossP  You knew of a 14 in S.A. that had done huge k's if I recall rightly, think it got to just shy of 300,000k before detonating itself.

My K8 has 90k/km but I haven't ridden it much over the last 5 years. The BMW has clocked 137k/km in that 5 year period.

We have a new member in the german forum who just purchased a 14 with 1449 km (900 miles). It was a carport find. We are all curious how he will fare with it. Has some telltale signs of sitting there for so long but no rust in the tank.

Yep watched Hooli's 14 rack up the miles over the years - and actually given its usage and the UK weather, it's in pretty good condition IMO, mechanically well maintained by Hooli as the mileage reflects!

Oil coolers crack at about 50k in my experience, apart from that just normal stuff really. More info in my intro thread here http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=1314.0

BTW, valve clearances on mine have never changed & it's had halfords oil for the last 70k or so, changed every 4k. So they don't need 'owt special to make them last.

May 2008 build bike owned from new since September 2008 used primarily for a 50km each way commute including around 17km of freeway with the occasional long distance run and blast through the twisties.
What's gone wrong?
Not much really!!
Gear linkage rose joints broke - pins sheared off both ends one at a time at maybe 120k kms and 145k kms or so. Rode home both times with it in 2nd gear - bit noisy on the freeway!!! Maybe I've just got a heavy foot...
Small patches of the chrome wore off the fork legs so I replaced the entire legs (tubes and sliders) with low mileage ones from a wrecker to minimise downtime.
Oil cooler has been fine - no issues.
Still on the original battery!
Shocks had the seized then leaking adjusters - a refill with engine oil fixed that.
Seat cover cracked - replaced it with a cover off eBay which lasted around 12 months so bought another seat off a low kms bike being parted out.
Valve clearances all good last check - around 15k kms ago - so will do again over Xmas break.
The usual tyres, chains, sprockets, brake pads and discs.
Irridium spark plugs after the first 40k kms - last a lot longer than the standard ones.
Make sure to dry out the compartment that the multi-pin connector for the ECU sits in - and every now and then pull apart and spray with contact cleaner.
Every 40k kms or so pull the fuel pump and clean the filters.
And I change the engine oil and filter (I've used genuine and K&N filters - mainly genuine) religiously every 5000kms (ok - sometimes it might run to nearly 6k kms!) - usually use Fuchs Silkolene Comp 4 (full synth) or Super 4 (semi-synth) or Penrite Everday 10w 40 car oil if they are not on special - no clutch issues.
Running K&N air filter and PC3 with a Shark slip-on - had it tuned on the dyno with that setup when new and haven't touched it since.
Does seem to run a bit rich at low revs when cold - but fuel consumption now is the same as when it had 5k kms on it so I'm not complaining...
Finish has stood up to time remarkably well considering the bike is ridden in all weathers and spends every working day sitting outside - bearing in mind no salt on the roads over here to destroy the aluminium. Few stone chips on the tank and elsewhere as can be expected.
Picture was taken in January of this year - so about 20k kms ago - doesn't look any different now!!

No idea of mileage on mine.
Came crashed with smashed clocks.

Last owner and I both put in serious mileage, but both kept on top of its services.
Its got a noisy 3rd gear and has needed a camchain and a few other bits.
I suspect its got a few miles under its belt.

Post by: black14 on Monday, 04 December 2017, 08:38 AM
Forgot to mention also front/rear wheel and sprocket carrier bearings and 4 pot caliper swap (mine from a GSXR600) - this latter definitely a mod I'd recommend - work better (in my view) and way cheaper to rebuild (my 4 pots didn't need a rebuild - just bolt on and away you go).
Only other issues have been the seat lock - the left hand spring in the retainer rusted away in about 45k kms and once the rivets were drilled out replaced with a spring from a biro - all good since - and the centre stand rubbers - replaced with rubber bungs from the hardware store and pan head bolts - all good too!
For me a good trick is to put a radiator cap spring over the seat latch - then when you unlock the seat it pops up and can be easily grabbed with your one free hand - rather than needing one hand to turn the key and another to lift the seat off the latch (usually there's something in the other hand that you want to put under the seat!).
Looking forward to the next 100k kms!!!
:salute:

Hope that person is on here still - maybe I should change out the cam chain anyway - although no sign of any issues with that yet. Might pull tensioner out and put back in to make sure tension is good over Xmas break.

Anyway, 312k kms - plenty of time yet!!!

Just under 140k miles on a clutch then.

Mine is still slipping a bit when cold so could be on the way out, but I think riding for a year with a dodgy slave that struggled to release at times accelerated the wear a bit.

I'll be clicking over 114k miles next weekend too, off to Scotland on it for a long weekend.

Edit to the above, after checking it was 928miles over the long weekend which puts my 14 on 116,008miles currently.

So it's due an oil change & needs a rear tyre again.

Good job it hasn't got an ashtray then Andy, else you'd be looking to trade it in for a new model  :happy1:

Well done on attaining that sort of mileage, shows how bullet proof the 14 really is, at some stage, given you've had yours from such a low mileage, it would be interesting to see what items (apart from normal service items) have worn out and when.

Had my K3 from 9400 miles Dave, and from memory the following major parts were replaced

Exhaust headers - had two sets of those before changing to stainless ones from SBS at about 70k miles. also replaced the collector box at this point as the clamps were badly corroded.
Oil Rad - This was punctured by a stone at the MCR in Kent - that was at about 80k miles
Clutch slave cylinder - bore was corroded, I think this was probably to do with me not bothering to change the fluid as regularly as I should - 108k miles. Incidentally, i checked the clutch plates at this point and they were still in tolerance. Original Clutch plates were still in it when sold.
Burnt out at least 3 stators during the time I had it, possibly because of not replacing the battery as often as recommended and replaced one sprocket bearing at about 68k miles
The offside rear shock started leaking at 95k miles, both were replaced by secondhand units from Bongy's old K4. Mileage from them unknown, but were still leak free when the bike was sold at 118k miles.

Thats about it aside from the normal pads, chains, tyres. The cylinder head was never removed during the time I had it and the engine still sounded as sweet as the day I bought it

I'v had my K2 since 7,452miles (sad I remember mileage before the test ride isn't it? It didn't move again till I got it) Oil n filter every 4k miles just for info

TPS about 45k
Oil cooler about 50k
Chain n sprockets inc sprocket carrier bearing every 30-35k
Oil cooler pipes about 90k
Replaced stator as it burnt out about 90k
Battery about 100k
Rechromed forks about 100k
High pressure filter at 50k & 100k
Saddle replaced about 50k as spilt & foam had rotted
Saddle recovered about 114k
Fourth set of steering bearings fitted about 100k, now on rollers rather than balls
Oh & finally on my second givi rack as they are made of cheese & rot away

Useless fact, the left hand bulb in the back light is still original.

That's a good amount of saddle time ! roughly what has been the wear items in that mileage . original engine internals ? fork internals? rear shocks, how many sets of wheel , headstem brgs , electrical issues TPS relacments etc  interesting to know the durability. obviously its dependent on servicing regime, riding habits etc but will be good to know roughly whats coming. Corrosion induced issues are not really applicable here in West Aus as we just had the first real cloud and rain in about 5 months yesrtaerday been a really mild summer of around 30 degrees C days.

Morning Horse,

A rough list from memory is -

TPS at 50k
Steering bearings, I'm on the fourth set & changed to rollers last time now they do ones that fit the K2 frame
Chain n sprockets every 25-30k
Forks rechromed at 100kish, they'd worn where the seals run so new seals leaked after 3k
Fork internals are original
Fork seals, I'm probably on the fifth set
Original wheel bearings
Sprocket carrier bearing changed every time I change the chain
I've recently fitted a rewound stator as the original burnt out about 80k, the replacement lasted till 124k
Oil cooler split about 45k, I fitted an aftermarket one with proper end tanks
Oil cooler hoses fell apart around 90k, but that was corrosion from salt stuck in the crimps
Discs at both ends have been changed, all due to dodgy calipers warping or damaging them in other ways. So my fault
Seat replaced once when it split, I recovered it the second time with a better material
The furthest I've been into the engine is to check the valve clearances, which have never changed since I first checked them at 15k. It still runs as good as ever & doesn't use a drop of oil. MPG has never changed either
Oil & filter every 4k miles is it's main maintenance, other things are done as needed

That's about it since 2007 as far as I can remember.

Oh yeah & one of the tail light bulbs is still original!

Evening Hooli,
That's a very interesting summation and pretty impressive reliability but for known weaknesses, the fork re chroming issue is one that is strange to me as I thought the white metal in the bush was sacrificial. I might change the oil a bit more regularly than I have been even though synthetic oil in there should not break down for a long time .
My TPS ( primary) only got 55k kms so it seems they are not a well built bit, oil cooler I suppose is understandable with the vibration but still not great, the valve seat recession is great on these engines , the second time I did mine I bought them all down to minimum as they don't seem to change much.

Probably a Stanley globe they seem too last!!

Thanks for the reply , very informative , have a good week,

Horse

Great summery @Hooli
:onya:
@horse
The low oil change intervals is nothing to do with what oil you use (though Suzuki recommend semi-synthetic oil) it's due to the barrels being ceramic coated rather than metal liners .

I suspect he meant fork oil Seth as he was talking about the chrome.

I think mine wore as I didn't replace the dust seals when I did the fork seals the first few times so loads of dirt got stuck in there & a trip to Spain where they filled up with sand surely didn't help.

Apart from the usual tyres, chain and sprockets (about every 45k kms), brake pads, oil and filters (every 5k kms) front wheel bearings, rear wheel bearings x 2, sprocket carrier bearing x 3, fuel filter clean (every 40k kms or so), k&n air filter clean (every 15k kms or so) it's a fairly short list I think.
Replaced 6 pot calipers with GSX600 4 pot calipers as less susceptible to issues that come with daily riding in all weather conditions. Front fork legs chrome wore through (bushes still looked ok so just thin chrome I think) - I replaced with low kms full fork legs tubes and sliders and have since rebuilt the originals. Front discs x 2 sets and rear x 1. Chain guard bracket broke- fixed with a bit of aluminum angle and a couple of screws. Rear shock adjusters refilled with oil and torx screws replaced with hex cap screws. Main power wire corroded and rejoined. Injectors cleaned after dealer routed tank drain line incorrectly and got water in the tank. Seat cover split so foam dressed up and recovered. Gear linkage rose joints broke (1 front 1 rear). Front master cylinder has had a kit through it. Clutch master has had a kit through it and the slave a new seal and the Busa seal fitted.
Front footrest rubbers replaced.
Valve clearances have been checked regularly and don't seem to move.
Engine uses no oil and runs great. Fuel consumption hasn't varied other than with the right wrist.
Pairs removed and slip on pipe and PC3 from new.
Can't think of anything else and I reckon it still scrubs up ok after a quick tub!
🍻

I might treat it to it's 3rd ever sump plug washer soon, but no rush as it doesn't leak yet.

I do need to whip the camcover off & helicoil a few of those bolts though as they felt wrong last time I checked the valves. I'll reseal the camcover gasket at the same time as it's got a slight weep (probably as the dodgy threads aren't clamping it right).

I used the first trip metre for each trip resetting at the start .
The 2nd I used to record tyre life .

I'm similar Seth.

T1 is for each tank of fuel, it's an easy check it's running right.
T2 is for rear tyre life.

I'll probably never be a high miler on my 1402 but I put all these kilometres on my GS1000G.

Hopefully 7 is a lucky number.

The last 50,000 kilometres as a VJMC member and a few with Irish and his 1400 and XJ900.

A seemingly meaningless number, but it means 150k miles done since I started the test ride the day before I bought this bike on Oct 2007. I wonder if it'll do the same again, it feels like it will so far.

Incredible effort Hooli.  :clapping:Highest 14 ive ever heard of was 312 th ks, 194 th miles. Youll beat that. Story goes timing chain let go, who knows what really happened, how it was serviced etc.
Title: Re: high milers club
Post by: Hooli on Monday, 24 August 2020, 08:05 PM
By the time I've paid off enough debts to buy a new bike, I should be up to about 250k on this one. Last time I checked the timing chain it was fine, so I think it'll get there.

Oh & I found a pic from 18th Aug 2019 showing 136k, so it seems I've done 21k in the last year.

Found this on the BMW R1200r forum.  It's actually about extended warranties but the mileage is incredible.

Another data point: I bought my 2013 R1200R new in May, 2013, with the Western Service Contract ($995, 5-yr, unlimited mileage). By March, 2014, the OEM warranty had expired (36,000 mileage limit in USA). In March, 2017, at 184,000 miles, the driveshaft, final drive, and swingarm all disintegrated. The Western adjuster requested service records to verify that final drive fluid had had been changed as recommended. Since I had all services done regularly at dealers, I sent him those invoices, and he approved the claim without delay. Payment from Western covered all but $90 of the $5,473 repair bill. I did not have any other claims for the reminder of the contract, and the Roadster is now at 290,000 miles.

Well it's taken 2 years, what with Covid lock downs, shoulder reconstruction, elbow surgery and 4 other bikes to ride, but another milestone for the 14 reached.

During this time I had the only serious issue with the bike since I bought it new in 2008 - the stator wires finally let go during a high country run and I was stranded between Bombala and Jindabyne. A friendly local farmer looked after my immediate needs - i.e. cold beer - and he and his lovely wife Nicole shared their lamb roast dinner with me too! There are still some great people out there... Bike was put on a flatbed tow truck to Cooma and then back to Mount Evelyn in the back of a ute. $700 odd later for a new stator and reg/rec (for peace of mind) she was up and running and hasn't missed a beat since. Oh, and a new set of handlebars to replace the originals bent by the overzealous towies...  :furious:

Whilst the kms aren't adding up like they did when on commuting duty days (which ceased abruptly due to Covid in March 2020 and are now never to return ) they are far more enjoyable being kms for pleasure, usually on some of the best motorcycle roads in the country. E.g. a recent trip to Omeo and back - Mitta Mitta to Omeo is 108kms of glorious road and was done both ways. I do have to admit that tyre wear is suffering accordingly - a price I'm happy to pay!

Although I do have (and probably always will) a fondness for all of my bikes, the GSX is probably the best all round road bike I've owned and I look forward to sharing the next milestone shared with the old black lady!

Title: Re: high milers club
Post by: black14 on Sunday, 20 November 2022, 08:32 AM
@grog
Other than what I'd call "consumables" (e.g. wheel/sprocket carrier bearings - keep an eye on the latter, pads, fork rebuild couple of times, discs - think 2 sets of fronts and one rear but due another rear, clutch master/slave kit and busa seal - thanks to the org for that tip, front brake master kit, plugs - I use iridium so not very often, chains, sprockets and of course oil, filter and tyres) only other things have been couple of broken gear linkage rose joints, footpegs got a bit droopy and worn down so replaced with aftermarket cheapies, brake/clutch levers replaced with shorties, 6 pots replaced with 4 pots for easier and cheaper maintenance, chrome on fork legs wore through so new fork legs on rebuild, seat cover replaced, spring in seat latch rusted away and replaced with one out of a biro very early in the piece and still there working perfectly, chain guard bracket broke - fixed with a bit of aluminium angle, rear shocks rebuilt including one shaft re-chromed is about it.

I did need to lubricate the STVA mechanism as that got a little sticky and was getting the dreaded C28 code until freed up, and also had the main power feed in the headlight corrode and require re-joining.

I replaced the cam chain tensioner spring as a precaution - it was a bit shorter than a new one and cost $6 odd! I discussed replacing the cam chain in the near future as a precaution with Mick Hone (who should probably have a fair idea!) and the advice was not necessary. He did mention that the tensioner itself can wear on the ratchet pawl teeth and result in the chain slacking off at high revs so replacing that at some point might be worthwhile, although from a manual inspection mine seems to be fine, so I'll just keep an eye on that.

I am pretty religious regarding oil/filters - every 5k kms for me. I have used various oils but settled on Gulf Western semi-synth probably for the last 140k kms or so. Filters have been either Suzuki, K&N or Hi-Flo. The engine uses no oil at all and there's never any sludge or metal on the sump plug magnet.

Also, regular (say every 40k or so) cleaning of high pressure fuel filter is on my list of good things to do as is a dose of injector cleaner every now and again.

Given the service the bike has had - i.e. commuting 100 kms/day in all weathers and sitting outside in the weather all day at work, I'm amazed how well the finish has held up. We don't have the salt on the roads problem like the UK and elsewhere so that probably helps, but a regular wash down with CT18 and a pressure washer (avoiding bearing seals etc. obviously) seems to have helped there.

The bike has been a pleasure to own and ride and, as an all rounder, is probably one of the best - not that I would be in any way biased of course!

When I registered my 2008 bike in 2012 they asked for the mileage. I said it was 000001 kilometres. They said "Is it new then?"    I said no it's very 2nd hand, but the clocks had been smashed to f#ck and replaced. For some reason they had a bit of head scratching before they accepted it.

Basically bugger all.

Valves are still in spec & not changed since I first looked at 15k. But it's had...
2 stators, 3 TPS, 1 SPS, 3 high pressure fuel filters and a hole in the sump welded from a misaligned exhaust before I got it.

Oh & an oil cooler once, along with cooler hoses twice as they rotted out. Still on the original seals in the clutch slave, it's been stripped a few times but I've always reused them.

Runs as well as ever, uses no oil & so on. You wouldn't think she'd gone any further than a mate's 31k example to ride.

It's comfy, relaxing as I don't feel the need to rush when I don't want too on it. Plus it's new so I can trust it to do long trips with little prep. I'll still take the 14 on some trips, but the next one is 3 weeks long so the extra 1k miles between services is a bonus too.

I still have the same attitude towards most HD owners I see as I did before I got it. I'll never get the 'I ride an HD so I'm more of a biker' thing.

either a K or S series BMW, lots of fun. My K bike has seen 99600km and still looks new. If you're handy with spanners its not that hard, the issue is the cost of parts.

Very diff i know but i like new GSX 8, sort of a bit lighter than 14, any advantage over 14, for the extra bucks, not sure. Only want one bike, 14 is sorted, selling would destroy me, huge decision.

My BMW R1200RT 2014 has 162,000+ kms
I've owned a myriad of other motorcycles in that time also.
My friend says I have no emotional attachment to motorcycles and I guess that's true to an extent.
However 22 years of ownership is because I firmly believe this is the best allrounder I've ever had the privilege of owning 🏆

@grog and I'd love a Guzzi but despite that I will not sell my 1400 it's just such a good bike.

Also I will NOT be changing us to gsx1400plusafewtriumphandbmwowners.org    :rofl3:

I would agree, can hardly use what I have now, he clearly enjoyed riding it though and couldn't think what to replace it with, he'd tried the Kwak h2 thing but didn't like all the modes. Shows the engine is strong though.

I see this on other forums where the lads fit blowers and big bore kits to their big engined bikes, I think to my self where are you gona use all that power on a public road ????  I just like standard big engines (as they are more reliable) and spend my money on how the bike looks.  ;)

Hmm, I have a turbo sitting here but by the time I price up all the bits and pieces and work it'd cost me too much so it's not fitted. :(

Had my Gen-1 Busa since 2005 or 6.
Had my B-King since 2007.
Had my Bandit 12 since 2009.
Had my GSX1100 since 2008.

My bikes rarely get seriously high mileage as I do like to run a few and the use gets spread amongst them.

Normally my newer bike gets most use and it's often the better bikes for long hauls. I sold my first Gen-1 Busa and H2 SX that both had this role.

I like longer rides, but don't do enough of them anymore to clock up any impressive numbers.

Show off, bet you can't wait for that 200k mark, would love to see that  :notworthy:

I'll never reach that mileage as I don't ride as much as I used to, that and I can't afford that much fuel!

All the best ... Barry

I've said for ages I want to see 250k on it, I'd have to stop riding the others as much to get there. 200k will be a nice milestone though.

To think when I got it in Oct 2007 there was 7,452 on the clock prior to my test ride & I collected it the next day.

That'd be something ... I'd probably even take a day or so to ride down and meet up with you just to see it ... so get the finger out

I got my 'good one' the K3 in 2004 with 4500 miles on the clocks and a destroyed front end ... in the next twelve years I took it up to 103k (although clocks not working for about 3k of that).

I've got another three and a bit years to go on the mortgage, then I'll have more money ... never know I might catch up to (and pass) you  :hat:

All the best ... Barry

P.S. Just worked out what it'd take to catch up with you ... say 70k miles, 30 miles a gallon @ around £7 a gallon (for now) ... around £16k ... that and around two years of doing 100 miles every day :happy1:

I've carefully never worked the cost out, but I know mine does around 50mpg overall, better on a run & worse on short trips. So it'll be cheaper than you think.

That really is impressive and just goes to show what a joy they are to ride and how easy to keep going.

I think I'm at around 42k on mine, but it has to share my love with others.

Long may you enjoy it.

Re-posting this here - I got confused between the "High Milers" thread and the "High Milers Club" thread...  :confused1:

QuoteWhat issues you had Black?

@Grog - I posted up details in this thread when I hit 280k kms back in November 2022. Since then the only issue I've had is a failure to start (see this thread - https://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=7857.0 (https://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=7857.0)) which, after a lot of mucking around, was eventually resolved by cleaning a bridge connector next to the tail light... That unfortunate episode was day 1 of an 8 day 3500km ride which was then completed on a mates GPZ 1100 - a very different experience to the 1400!

The 1400 doesn't do anything like the kms it used to these days - COVID put an end to the commuting kms and retirement ensured they will never return, and it has to share ride time with my 5 other bikes too. On the plus side, the kms it does do are far more enjoyable than the commuting chore.

Incredible distance Hooli, not much has failed. They reckon a 1991 Harley holds the longest ever, one million, like to see its repairs

I've not heard of that one Grog. Sure I've seen about a bloke riding a Goldwing around the world for about a decade & on 570,000miles are just one new engine...

I'd love to know how people fund such trips, indeed a few seem to get rich off them. Must be a great life to lead.

I know that when triumph were resurrected from the dead a Trident went about 235,000 miles before Triumph bought it from the owner and stripped it down to find everything in the engine was still in spec.  Those early triumph triples were well over engineered but it's not bad for a new company.

The Harley with a million, 9 motor rebuilds& 2 new motors, 105 rear tyres,9 new seats. He had to average 125 miles each day for 30 years, not sure how he found time for the repairs.Must be true, its on the internet🤷😀

That's 9524 miles (15,238km) for each rear tyre, not bad if it's true.  Not that impressive if it's had 9 motor rebuilds and 2 new motors.

If on the same motor that's been rebuilt, then that'd be something.

Im a bit doubtful on harley story, i do know one high mileage bloke. Honda 6 cylinderGold wing. He did just on 600 th ks, think around 370k miles. Nothing ever broke, reverse gear did actually, Honda fixed it free. I really dont think that bike ever had a problem. That bloke was 70 yrs old when he bought that bike, hope i can do similar.
