Anyone else on here doing Park Runs (UK or AU) ?
A 5K (3.1 mile) timed run normally on a Saturday morning.
I know a few folk in the UK doing them.
We have a great mixed group.
Everything from super fit young athletes, to those waaaay over weight,
Mums with push chairs, folks with dogs and walkers who take an hour.
(and no shortage of young lady's in Lycra!)
I needed to sort out my health.
I'm 53 with arthritis and lots of work and bike injuries.
Started at 35 minutes in the new year (who says New Year resolutions always fail?) and have been shaving a few seconds off most weeks.
Currently down to 27 minutes 17 seconds.
Its a run not a race, and a very supportive group.
Anyone else ?

haha I first thought this was a motorbike challenge thing then I saw it involved actual running !
So, no, I haven't tried it.
But it does get me thinking that perhaps I should !
Looks like a large group (200+ ?)
Got a link?
http://www.parkrun.com.au/
Ours is a big group as folk like the course.
There are heaps of other groups around Brisbane.
My wife does Park Runs and got me into it.
My 50 year old Sister runs 100K "Ultra Marathons"
My wife and I are going to do the Bridge to Brisbane 10K this year.
:boogie: parkrun has us hooked, been doing them for over two years now. Devonport is our hometown parkrun and on Sat it will Devonport's 100th run. :hat:
My knees say no to running.
Karate every day, whether at home or in the dojo.
My problem is the food tastes so good.
My old bones aren't great.
Doctor recommends swimming or cycling but that not me.
Legs were playing up after my first 10K run but that's my own dumb arse fault
going from 5 straight to 10K in one go.
I was a big eater and loved my soft drink but I'm slowly getting better.
Went from 85kg t Xmas to 78 now but I do miss my Pizza, crisps etc.
Wifey and I are planning a motorbike trip to Darwin come July on our GSXs. Darwin has two parkruns, one on the CBD foreshore and one out at Parmerston city, we intend to do both while we are there. Also, we intend to be in Dubbo the last weekend in August to participate in the Dubbo Stampeed, which is a running event for all distances up to the marathon.
Our trip will go up via Alice Springs on the Sturt hwy and back via Mt Isa, Winton Longreach Cunnamulla and Dubbo, then to Melbourne on Sept 3 to board the Spirit back home to Tasmania. Six weeks on motorcycling with the Mrs - can't wait. My bike will only need new tyres and MH's bike (a stunning white 09 GSXR600) will get a new chain and sprockets as well.
BTW it's only 3830km from Station Pier in Melbourne to Darwin, ad a few detours and the return trip via QLD, reckon it will be a 10,000km+ trip. :clapping:
I'm not too bad running 5K's.
I'm slow but its do-able.
Did a 10K run yesterday afternoon (59 minutes 38 seconds) and my bloody knees hurt this morning.
Well I registered. Sandgate is my closest one, so I might give it a go.... can't see me going very quickly though - a couple of those kids in strollers will probably beat me...
You'll be faster than those still on the couch.
How do they actually do the timing?
It says to bring a printed bar code. Do you just swipe that at the beginning and end?
Everyone starts together.
Run 5K.
When you cross the finish you get a token with another bar code (and they know what time you crossed the line)
You then get your personal barcode and the token scanned in (where you hand the token back in)
Times are posted later that day in Emails or online results.
I printed my bar code out and laminated it. After a few runs I ordered a bar code wrist band.
I do my own runs mid week, and have started doing 10K runs so I use a Garmin watch.
It helps me judge my pace and avoid doing a fast K or a slow K and I know to within s second or two my Park Run time when I finish.

At 85K you couldn't have been much of a big eater! I consider myself fairly capable of putting away a decent feed & some beers on a regular basis. Currently I'm tipping the scales at around 134 - 135Kg. (poor bike thinks it's 2 up all the time!)
I'd like to get down a bit, but running is no good for me - kill me joints!
I'm almost of generous enough proportions to join the breakfast club the UK riders have, I say, almost! :stir:
I was around 100kg at christmas, now hovering in the 91 kg range. I would ideally like to be around 85kgs.

You'd be surprised.
Wife can't believe how much I can eat. I really love my food!
Even when I was a serious drinker and got into it most nights I was no heavier.
I'm on my feet all day, and active all evenings (I'm down the shed at the moment) I have high blood pressure (now being medicated) and rarely sleep more than 5 hours a day. I'm up with the dog and feeding the hens at 3.30am ! I actually tried to bulk up, eat all the right (and wrong) things a while back and went to the gym. Never gained more than a couple of Kg's.
I don't remember ever seeing more than 85kgs. My body just won't do it !
What I lack in ability I try and compensate for in stubborn determination... :happy1:

Well Tony, you're one luck S.O.B. I just need to think of having a beer (which is often) & the weight goes up.
We're all different, friend of ours is same as you, eats plenty & never puts on any weight, body can't seem to do it.

Yeah, it used to be an issue when I was younger.
Never liked being a skinny f#cker !
Less of an issue now though.
Being 80kg has its advantages..... LOL

We could be twins, you could try a bicycle, easy on the knees.
I like to not wear Lycra to upset the purists.
I also do a bit of karate, and six days a week do the exercises in the link below.
I tried the gym, don't like to share so these are perfect.
They were conceived to be complimentary to karate but I believe they would help anyone .
You don't need to increase the weights just consistently work the body till fatigued.
x1qKW5e-PPw
How much would that stick & concrete club weigh Dave?
I'm not sure, I used a 2kg weight and a bit of dowel for mine, and a couple of 4kg kettle balls for the hand weights.
Ok well...
Well i did my first parkrun yesterday.
Dramas with lower back PAIN but aerobic fitness just poor rather than abyssmal as I'd suspected. This is the first time I've run in anger for 20 years or so...
I'm proud of just turning up.
Finishing the 5kms was a total bonus even though it took 40 minutes...

Sandgate parkrun results for event #234. Your time was 00:39:52.
Congratulations on completing your 1st parkrun
You finished in 288th place and were the 151st male out of a field of 357 parkrunners and you came 20th in your age category
I can only assume there were only 20 runners in my age category.... :D
I'm bloody sore today though....
Well done Vlad !
I'm impressed you had a go.
My 1st one was 40 minutes something.
Its a bloody shock when you haven't run in a long time.
Good on you for doing it Mate.... :onya:
Did a 10K (6.2 mile) run tonight.
I'm never very quick after a day at work.
Ran the whole 10K without having a walk for the 1st time !
(I'm new to 10K's and normaly only do timed 5K's)
Shaved a few seconds off down to 58 minutes 55 seconds.

if you like your fitness guys and girls try insanity i do this six days a week it about 45 mins every day and one rest day a week and you can do it over 30 days and then carry on or move up to the deluxe this is hard .. but the first one is a great work out all round fitness :onya:
Tony that is mighty impressive :onya:
My 5k 40 minutes 'half run' will do me for now but hopefully will get better in due course.
Not sure if I will do better or worse this week, but with the start time at Springwood delayed to 9am I'll be able to do the 7am Sandgate run and then get across for the get together brekky !
Well,
Sandgate parkrun results for event #235. Your time was 00:38:40.
You finished in 298th place and were the 159th male out of a field of 364 parkrunners and you came 24th in your age category
Improved my time by a whole..... 1 minute & 12 seconds.
Felt worse aerobically this time, but it was still the bad lower back pain kicking in from about the 1.25km mark.... NOT fun at all. I wish I knew some exercises or something that could help with that....
Haven't done a Park Run for a couple of weeks.
I've been doing 10K runs mid week and my knees aren't great.
Only did 5K's in the week this time so had a crack at another 5K Park Run.
Ran a 27:33.
Not my best but close.
Knees still hurt.
I shaved precisely a minute off last weeks time - ran 00:37:40 this morning.
My back issues are frustrating me immensely because if I could have that sorted I'd reckon I could run similar times to yours.
I HATE having to stop and rest as I go along, because my back pain is too much.
Drink lots of beer before you start Mike - you'll be stopping for a pee instead of back ache! Problem sorted.
At Devonport parkrun #102 this morning I run an improving 30.19, far from my pb of 26.29 from 2015, I too am trying to overcome lower & back sciatic pain down my left leg, I am getting better though, I can feel it in my old bones :rofl2:
We dropped from 238 runners last Sat morn to just 78 this morning - it was pissing down and freezing cold
Got any tips for exercises for helping lower back pain?

Got any tips for exercises for helping lower back pain?
Yes lots, but it depends on the condition causing the pain. And on your current fitness level.
Start by moving around. Do not sit longer than 30 minutes (and check your sitting position). Start walking, working up (very slowly if needed) to 5k. In the beginning it might hurt. Keep going but let the pain be your guide as to distance and speed. Walk erect! Envision a cord on top of your head that pulls you up. Constantly remind yourself to do this! Then improve walking speed. Three times/week at least! Do not jog/run. No stupid sit-ups! The above alone might be enough to make you feel much better.
I had a long recovery from back issues. The above advice is the basis for recovery. Nothing really works without it! I eventually was able to get into powerlifting and didn't do to bad. I got there step by step - slowly and methodically, thanks to a wonderful sports therapist.
I'll be happy to share my thoughts/experiences with you, but start first with the above for now.
Haven't been for several weeks.
Tired from work, bad knee's from my 10K runs, a few lame excuses.
Went an did a steady run at Mitchelton this morning.
Didn't go too mad after my time off.
29 minutes 12 seconds.
Yes, I did Devonport parkrun this morning, 29.52, first time I have been able to do a sub 30s this year - me thinks I'm on the comeback from my backpain. :boogie:
I haven't been for a while - back problems seem worse. Could hardly walk yesterday when I got out of bed.. day off work and trip to physio...
28:03 this morning.
Within a minute of my best so I'm slowly shaving a bit off and getting back into it.
Small meet this morning. Quite cool until the sun was up.

I would suggest a visit to a good chiropractor for a thorough check up and potential treatment programme.
I have back issues and my Chiropractor I see every 3 weeks sometimes its a hard adjustment other time not much. A top quality pillow helps to so your neck is supported during sleep.
I couldn't run out if sight on a dark night, so I choose to cycle, not weight bearing and gives good muscle tone. No lycra for me though I think my arse is too big for that :rofl3: :rofl2: :rofl2:
GSXKING 3:^)
Chris
My Doctor recommends swimming or cycling.
Either are very "low impact" compared to running.
My problem with that is I enjoy running and it motivates me,
swimming or cycling don't and are a chore for me,
where as getting up at 6am in Winter to Park Run isn't.
I doubt I have too many years of running ahead of me but we will see.
I too have back and neck issues, having split and slipped 4 discs in my lower back some years ago and had 3 discs replaced in my neck. This used to cause me many issues just in daily life, but especially in riding a motorcycle and meant wearing a back brace much of the time to help support my spine. I'm not a great fan of swimming and cycling is a no-no for me as I can't do the crouched position of bikes.
Like you Tony, I enjoy running, but over the past year or so, its taken its toll both on my back and knees. Having visited my back consultant (who is a keen biker), we discussed this and he suggested visiting a gym 2-3 times a week. Now I've always hated the formality of gym, but agreed to give it a go. 3 months on, and I find that its starting to give me a new lease of life, really quite enjoying it, do 2-3 hours of gym each week and optionally about 30 mins of swimming working mainly on my lower body (upper body work starting soon) and have found that I'm now able to get back out running (albeit gently) without strain, I've been able to take my back brace off, and feel a lot healthier in myself.
Not saying that doing gym would work for you necessarily, but by working on the different back and leg muscles over the past few weeks for a couple of hours each week has helped me enormously.
I had it pointed out to me when I asked about those "step counter
walking things" that measure your amount of steps, that my phone
was already doing it. Looking into my phones history I'm averaging
over 18,000 steps a day at work most days before I go running.
I wondered why I'd worn 3 pairs of trainers out this year!
I stopped doing 5K Park Runs in January.
Lots of reasons, pneumonia, influenza A, getting up at 3.15am for work, being over seas, broken wrist... and lots of other bullshit reasons why I couldn't go.
9 months later I got my act together.
The last 3 weeks I've run a 34, 33 and 32 minute 5K. F#ck me, it's hard work! I'm nowhere near my old 27 minute time and I'm really struggling.
Not being real smart, I wait until the start of the hot weather to start running again. Feckin' Eegit!

Full credit Tony, but you are mad running in this heat !
Last year there was a HUGE Xmas Day Park run in the city along Riverside. That was a bit warm!
Mitchelton where I normally go are haveing one on New Years Day. Not sure about that. I like a New Years Day lap of Somerset Dam on the bike leaving home just before sunrise, it's a bit cooler and very little traffic.

33 degrees C most days at the moment.

I run on my own, just to get a bit of exercise and move the blood around. I've got a fairly sedentary job so I need to do something.
Your post has motivated me to have a go at this Park Run thing. I suspect heat is not going to be a problem over here...
I cannot run far but do enjoy paying tennis. (poorly)

I normally sleep with pajama type bottoms, socks and a T-Shirt, under a thick quilt pulled up over me even on our hottest Summer days.
Wife has the aircon running 24/7 and it's like a f#ckin' deep freeze in our house.
I swear I'd be warmer at the North Pole.
My recent park runs have gone....
34:55
33:19
31:57
31:55 (Today)
The times are going the right way, but I'm struggling to do it.
Last year on Xmas Day I ran a 32:52
Xmas day is normally bloody warm so I'm not sure i'll beat it this year.
Just ran a 30:54 Park Run.
Its was 30 degrees C and again I struggled.
My best time this year, but still a way off my personal best at the same event.
Lucky it was 30 Tony, 37 here just a few ks away. Well done with time👍
Jeez Tony you make me look like a fat lazy bastard.
Oh wait, no that's my mirror !
As I mentioned before, I had a long break from Park Run's for most of this year. Took me ages to get over pneumonia and influenza etc.
Since giving it another go, my times have gone....
34:55....... 33:19...... 32:19...... 31:55...... 31:42....... 30:54..... 31:30...... 30:37.
It's certainly going in the right direction, but I'm really struggling to get near the 27 minute times I was running last year.
To be fair my sensible diet and mid week runs are pretty much non existent recently so I'm guessing that might help.
It's strange. I'm not very good at running and I struggle with the 5k but I do find something enjoyable about it. Not sure if it's the social element or me liking numbers and chasing times.
Stupid old b#stard .....

Good on you Tony, wish l had your determination.
:worshippy:
Me too! I'd be needing a stretcher and oxygen after running 5k :happy1:
3rd Park Run this year.
I ran a 32:56.
Fark I was hot and struggling towards the end.
Good on ya mate, if you enjoy doing it, keep on doing it - if the enjoyment stops, pull the pin.
Sure are white legs for an Aussie resident though! :stir: I'd of thought there would be more sun over there that? :whistling:
Been here 15 years.
Almost everywhere I've worked, BP refinery, Boggabri Mine, Port of Brisbane etc etc have been "Long Pants, long sleeves, broad hat" sites, or I'm in the shed, or on my bike in full gear.
Working outdoors for 15 years here, being out in the sun doesn't really appeal to me that much.
Just ran a 30:27.
I think that's my fastest run in the last 12 months.
Wife ran at the same meet but ran slower than normal. Was too warm to be enjoyable for her. My last 1k was faster than the first 4, I tried to pace myself to run low 30's but went a bit too hard when I knew I was near the end. Wasn't great when I finished and struggled for a minute or two to recover.
Still way off my 27:17 personal best but I'm determined to be under 30:00 soon.

First run after several months of ill health.
Only did 3K's and took it pretty slow, 23 minutes 21 seconds.
Struggled a bit but I've done a treadmill run with a heart monitor
and a cycle stress test for my lungs so I recon I'm good to go.
The run was pretty crap but being out there again was a mental boost.
