Hi all I am after a bit of advice.
I did the Wirral egg run on Sunday.
Cracking day but mad busy.
My bike got very hot, the fan cuts in but still hot, crawling for half an hour in the egg run.
I noticed smoke from the engine.
It appears I have a leak from the rubber cam cover gasket.
I have looked in the workshop manual and it looks straight forward job.
Has anybody done this, any tips, is it a simple job?
Thanks Ste

I have removed the "Hiw To" prefix - this is used when you are describing how to do a job, not ask a question. Thanks. Admin.

In reply to your question, yes it is a straight forward job.
Nothing to do.............all day to do it....I love retirement

As Barmy said...Straightforward job..
BUT don't overtighten the 8 cam cover bolts. They strip the threads really easily as they are only M7.
Stick with correct torque settings as stated in the manual and you'll be fine.
Assumption is the mother of all fuck ups!

as already said very straightforward job
you don't say how old or milage of your bike
but I'd be tempted to fit a new gasket as your might have gone a bit hard due to age and the heat.
also I'd do an oil and filter change too.
as you need to remove pairs hoses and coils
sparkplugs and cam postion sensor.
might be a chance to fit a pairs removale kit.

hope  all works out

just done this and yip easy enough

Remove seat
Remove tank - 2 10mm bolts - a multi plug and the quick release fuel pipe (which is a little bit of a pain)
Remove the coils brackets and coil leads -  held on with 2 screws each coil
Remove the cam position sensor (5mm Allen bolt)
Undo the 8 cam cover bolts
You may need to gently prise the cam cover off but once off it slides out easily

Clean both surfaces and fit the new rubber gasket

Great advice I am feeling better about taking it on
The bike reg is 2003 it's very low miles just short of 6000
Any advice on the best place to buy the gasket in .uk
Also just one further question
Would I use liquid gasket just on the end bits or all over
Thanks Ste

If you are going to use it I would put a thin smear all around.
Keep the rubber side down.          Mick

Rocker cover gaskets (Part number:1117342F01) are on back order on a lot of the sites Ive tried inc Fowlers & MSP

I think JustBandits have them
http://www.justbandits.com/engine-casing-gaskets.html

I would take it off give it good clean and inspect it - mine was not sitting correctly and once I cleaned it was okay -I just used a good quality instant gasket (as gasket out of stock)
