S100 far away the best product I used for keeping 14 motor black, looked new after a spray. Unfortunately only source these days is USA and they are running low. Prohibitive freight cost just way too much.Such a mongrel as that stuff just so good. So I found Harley do black engine brightener, just over $20. I cleaned motor, then applied the Harley spray. At first disappointed as had left a slimy residue. After a few rides it wasn't too bad. Big clean/wash today, looks pretty good.So yeah, Harley black runs a good 2 nd to S100 for a nice black motor.

Very tidy Grog :onya:  :clapping:

Yeah, same Grog, use the HD engine "brightener" which is weird cause all their engines are black, dunno how black can get brighter, but anyway, nice stuff, does leave a film at first like you say
I try to take one day at a time, however sometimes several days catch up with me at once.

Hooli

The black on mine likes to go matt when manky, so I guess gloss=bright in Yankish rather than English

are those alloy covers polished Grog? Mine need doing, the chrome is getting pitted. I like the brushed satin look. Will probably get them all done at the same time, heard that "soda blasting" gets good results

I've got a set at home that have been wet blasted. Won't be back from work for a couple of weeks but I'll set myself a reminder to send you some pictures if you like?

Cheers Lurch. The blast and paint shop near me did a great job on the BMW factory alloy rear top box carrier. Might go and see them to find out what they can do, but I will show them your photos to show what I would like to achieve.

No problem. I had my XS650 side covers wet blasted and then brush finished them myself. This isn't the finished product but pretty close.

(Sorry to hijack grog  :smile2: )

Eric, still factory finish.Thinking about polishing the clutch cover. Saw your 650 covers lurch, look good. Is vapour blast same thing? Clutch cover done like yours would look ok with other covers? Oil window, could just mask up? What is the paint process you did? Sorry to be pest😎

Eric GSX1400K3

According to Google, wet blasting uses abrasive media suspended in water, creates no or little dust and removes paint and surface oils etc.

Vapour blasting I believe is the same as wet blasting.

Soda blasting uses sodium bicarbonate and is not as abrasive as others, not sure what surface texture that would leave?

I brought a soda blaster (just because)  Had a play with it, cleans stuff ok, but ya make a hell of a mess everywhere, be best used in a sandblasting tank setup, which I do not have, another item that needs sourcing.

Wet blast / vapour blast is the same as far as I know.

The oil window was left in throughout the process for the XS, although I have a new window I may press in.

They're not painted at this stage, just raw brushed alloy. That was a trial to see if I liked the look. I'd probably consider doing the same Cerakote MC-5100 my 1400 has on the swingarm etc if I was do coat them.

Just back from the usual working away. I'm a terrible photographer but here they are. Image quality reduced for the forum. Should still be ok but if you want better quality send me a message and we'll work something out.

Are you going to coat those pieces with a lacquer or something?

I bought a new set so these are just spares sitting in a box. I had planed to polish them prior to buying the replacements and probably will once said replacements start looking ratty.
