I should know but i dont. Can i take off original pairs covers, remove reeds, block off air inlet holes and just refit. Then just remove hoses, block off air filter holes Is it necessary to fit blanking plates where reeds were? Mine has just had vacuum blocked forever, thought about time to remove properly. Thanks.

Mick_J

Yes, I believe you can.
Keep the rubber side down.          Mick

That should work aye. I can't recall if there's a seal on the covers so a smear of sealant when they go back on might be a good idea.

What I did many years ago was cut two squares out of an old bit of scrap (LR wheelchock actually) the same size as the reed valves & fit that using the original rubber seal around it. No idea if it makes any difference but I figured a smooth top on the port might improve gasflow slightly over having a a bit of a chamber there to cause eddies & such.

I removed the pairs valves and refit the cover and seal with a light smear of instant gasket.
And that's it I have a spare set of the covers if you need very cheap at £15 the set .
I can't get pictures via my phone but its all very straightforward

I was in there recently.  I've had the vac lines blocked off forever too. Thought I would check. The original reeds are still in there. There's a nice rubber seal that actually retains the reeds. Mine were gunked up, so I took them out of the recess and cleaned them up, even removing the little screws that holds the spring plate on.

I figure as I don't have the blanking plates, having the reeds to block 99% of the hole, plus then the vacuum hose blocked off ensures a good seal.

One day I'll get the black anodised blanking plates, and matching black stainless bolts. I think they should mill them so that they slot into the recess where the reeds go, would make a better seal.
I try to take one day at a time, however sometimes several days catch up with me at once.

The reeds need removed as they vibrate and have been know to snap off falling into the valves then replace everything else and all will be good .
This bit what I've done on all 3 bikes more than 50k Miles ago without any problems or leaks .

Yes you can. It will work. I did so years ago.

I removed the reeds but left the actual mounting plate, did use the blanking plate with some sealer. Tidy up the top end really well, oh and it runs better at low revs.

Interesting, now I have another job to do. I just blanked my hoses off so now I'd better remove the reeds.
Another great day on the right side of the grass.😎

Cheers, will remove the reeds then.
