I have a 2008 1400 and the bike won't start. Turn the ignition on and it sweeps and primes but when you push start gets a clicking sound and primer reingageing but no starter motor. Battery is brand new. I have pulled all the plugs and sprayed and cleaned. Earth looks good. Disconnected the Gipro gear selection led screen and still no good. Any ideas.
Starter motor ?? Or the other cog it engages with maybe?
Cheers

Starter relay is shared with the indicators, I'd start there & then to the solenoid. 12v to the starter terminal from the battery with a jump lead should spin the engine if the starter is good too. People will suggest the clutch & sidestand switches, but as I recall if they don't work you don't even get a click from the relay as the the starter button circuit isn't energised.

By the way, it's considered good manners here to pot an intro in the appropriate section. Some of the old duffers get narked if ya don't.

Just because the battery is new don't mean a thing, try a jump start with another battery.  As Hooli says it's best to introduce yourself, you might get more help that way.
Keep the rubber side down.          Mick

Ne'er too old for good manners
I try to take one day at a time, however sometimes several days catch up with me at once.

Toptip go to the bar and introduce yourself also its very good to say where you are as there may well be other owners nearby who will be happy to help (swapping parts and the likes)

Step 2 have a good look through the pages in the forum as the answer will probably be there .
Then if your still stuck ask folk here .

Folk in here are much more likely to go out of there way and help folk who don't treat the ORG as a Facebook page.

Good luck with finding your fault and some of the things you should try .
Other things to check is the earth wires from the motor to the frame .
And the starter relay as described .
Hooli is a good guy to listen to having over 170k miles and has seen most problems over the years .
Others have been here on the ORG in its 3 various forms for best part of 20 years .

Your in the right place but just think on a little .

only a slightly modified gsx1400
oh and a standard one too

Matt, first thing is you need a good multimeter, we can then continue on your problem.

Hi grog
Thanks for the reply . I have a pretty good one in the garage. How would I test the starter motor. I've tried everything else but I've just noticed my low beam on the headlights has gone also. There's that clicking sound Everytime I try to start and the engine primes. I had the battery tested and it was fine.

Matt, meter on volts.Check volts at batt with start button pressed, around 12.Move neg onto frame/ motor re check. Tests earth connection. Move positive onto big starter wire, re check. Move pos onto small starter wire, re check. If all these give good voltage its the starter motor. If your losing volts at any of these tests, its a supply problem, need to trace bad connection.

Goodness be upon you Mr Grog . . .

Matt, put your finger on the starter solenoid can when you press the starter button, you should feel it activate because there are a couple of relays that actuate when the starter is pressed, you might be hearing the wrong one.  If it does activate then the next thing would be to short out the larger terminals on the solenoid with a spanner to see if that spins the motor, if it does then your starter solenoid is probably shagged.

Hey mate ... I did the test and the starter came back no probs. I think it's the kill switch. I opened it up and sprayed it with isopropyl spray and it's been starting and running well for days now. My low beam on the headlight is not working so I'm going to go take it in to get a new led headlight. The one I installed was draining the battery on small rides.
I'll keep you informed but thanks for the help and also for the heads up on the introduction as well. Appreciate it. I was going to buy the z900 Se kwaka and take the 1400 of the road and fix multiple things on it but the wait is insane... been 6 months so far and no sign of showing up.. The front forks on the 1400 are black from the clear coat failing and casings are the same from stone chips. Needs new chain sprocket and back shocks and the brakes I thought were the one weak spot the 1400 had. I also like the twin exhaust on earlier models. I have a single akraprovic on mine.
Do you have any thoughts on the twin exhaust or recommendations on where to go ? My town is pretty limited for bike shops. Assuming your in Australia
