Akrapovic Headers .. How To Get Apart

Hi guys, I have a full Akra system on my both my 14s and they look crap after too many years riding through winters, so I'd like to give it some TLC ... but that'll not happen unless I can take it apart.

As you all know the Akra system has some lovely slot together pipes, however that all changes after a good few winters, they effectively become a solid system. The only way I can think of even trying to get them apart is soaking them in diesel (or WD40 etc) for a few months and then try and work them loose.

Anyone else had this problem and if so how did you get them apart (or did you just give up)?

Any help/suggestions much appreciated.

I get good results using plusgas and acetone, takes a while but effective.

As @hard road suggests, plus gas is great for freeing items up. Given the headers just push into the collector, then I'd soak then for a couple of days and then some gentle taps perhaps with a rubber mallet to help break any seal.

A bit of heat might help, gas torch.Thats how i get car exhausts apart.

Thanks guys .. I'd been thinking of trying a bit of heat, but acetone is a new one, luckily I happen to have about half a gallon of it.

First thing is to try and get the engine running again (been sitting for 7 years) ... then I can have a look at the exhaust.

Will let you know how I get on.

WHat they said. Of course once you get a few joints apart you can remove it to give more space to sod about with the others.

The butcher I bought my akra from decided to going big slots in the joins to get it apart, also it looked like it had never been cleaned my efforts at polishing life back into it failed it was like rusty patches,so I've had it vapour blasted, it came out great, not got it on the bike so not sure how it will look once used

Holy shit ... that's a bit extreme cutting slots in it!!!

I remember when I got my first Akra system (£125 delivered on FleaBay) and marvelled at how perfect a fit the pipes were onto the bits which bolt to the cylinder head
