Can't believe that he did that. He was so conscientious, about everything else.  :stir:  :whistling:  :happy1:  :happy1:  :rofl2:

I spotted some rust forming behind the rear peg hangers, where they bolt onto the frame a week or two back so I decided to get them off and clean it up. The LHS is the worst, but I started with the RHS because I didn't have to move so many bikes..

The two 12mm bolts are a tad awkward to get to with the rear wheel in place but with a little shorty spanner I got them out ok. The forward bolt took a modicum of patience to get back in.

Applied the anti rust lotion, and once dry, I put it back together.

got the Bikes out today, so i could work on the 14, and this happened and I had to shove them back in and work around them.
Thunder and lightening and a hail storm, still warm tho.

Yes, not being far from you I was hit by the same hail storm.

Not really May weather at the moment and not looking too promising for next week either.

Dwain Dibley

I did get the other side done despite the cramped conditions.    :coffeescreen:

I also removed the lower gear lever and front peg mount at the same time.

These points seem to be prime for rust starting and if left for too long would be a problem.

It keeps me from wandering the streets like a Hobo as well.  :rofl2:

Yes Rynglieder, it was a pain in the arse wasn't it ?. The sun was in and out like a fiddlers elbow.

I pulled the pipes off to make things easier and to clean the balance pipe which had burnt oil on it, probably from when I over lubed the chain.

I should really replace the chain at some point too.

I also moved the bottom exhaust clamp further down and it seems to have a better hold now.

A good afternoons tinkering all round at Dibley Manor.

In progress.

On the bench, nice and clean, clamp on far right moved.

This looks like the remnants of a Scottoiler type install ?

Yeah I'd guess that bracket was for a chain oiler's pipe too.

Had to go and visit an old friend of the family today to pass on the news and I decided to go on the 1400 as it was a nice dry, warm but overcast day. so a chance for a rip...

Anyway, I had a lovely visit and a good catchup and then it was time to go, I decided to go to my Daughters as it was school turfing out time, so I could see the Grandkids and ride the bike for a bit longer.

Parked up, they weren't in, so called, and waited for them to come home. Went to move the bike out of the way for them to park and.........Nuthin....Dead as a nit.....dead battery.

Tested at 90A instead of the 240 it started with from new. We put it on his portable starter and away it went, and I got home. battery is now on the Bench.

Dunno How old it is, it was on the bike when I bought it in march '23

Gonna buy a new one tomorrow.

D.D.

This is the old one, no date to be found. I think they should carry a date of manufacture and/or activation....Any thoughts ??

There's generally a date code on the top of the (clean) battery, post a pic of the top & we'll see if we can decipher which format they used for the code.

I missed this on my first look, when I tilted the battery I saw it.

3 years out of an agm or lead acid is about the norm.  Do yourself a favour and fit in a lithium one. They are a bit more, but definitely worth while.
I try to take one day at a time, however sometimes several days catch up with me at once.

Here's what I found;

Yeah, probably ready for last rites.

Thx for decoding.

Lucky we don't have 28 months in a year or less that 12 letters in the alphabet or Hans would run out of options for his battery coding.

Why just stamp the dd/mm/yyyy like everyone else?

I don't know how people kill batteries so fast to say 2-3 years is normal. I expect and get nearly 10 years from mine.

grog

I sold batteries for 35 yrs as part of my job. Few diff brands, all used numbers& letters for date. Longest lasted I saw, still working fine, Varta in a Merc, 26 yr, 2nd was 18 yrs in a good old Holden.
