Sorry for not coming back sooner.Just heard from my mechanic today. He cant find anything wrong.A couple of years ago second gear was done and he reckons the bits of steel are from that time meaning the engine wasn't cleaned out properly. So hopefully all will be good.

May be worthwhile fitting one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Filter-Plus-oil-filter-magnet-/272589883957?hash=item3f779f8a35:g:LZoAAOSwA3dYkHGy

I have one on mine, basically they are magnetic and "stick" to the top of the oil filter, so any bits of metal stay in the filter. Swappable from filter to filter as well

@gsxmad
Nothing to do.............all day to do it....I love retirement

BlackAdder

There should not be metal left from 2nd gear issue unless the whole sprockets would have xploded... ...aluminum dont stick to magnets...

Was it aluminum or metal in there?

If it smokes there is something wrong, piston, piston rings, valve stem seals, head gasket (well might be). And then the reason why one of the parts have failed should be found as well..
...I accidentally Mordored my motor, is it bad...?

BlackAdder

...clogged pairs or breather would create blue smoke too but that would'nt xplain the metal in sump...

It was metal in the sump.I removed the pairs and cleaned the breather today and the blue smoke has stopped. Im going for a good spin tomorrow then i will drop the oil and see if there is any more steel in it.

Well it seems that now a new problem has arisen. Did anyone ever have the problem of an engine that wont turn over when hot.I have put new battery in and had the starter checked to make sure it wasn't the problem.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Mick_J

Will it turn over/start when cold?
Keep the rubber side down.          Mick

gsxmad

It will turn over very slowly but wont start.

Just wondering here - did you ever stall the bike and press the start button almost immediately? A couple of owners in the past have done this and taken a cog off the starter basket (under the LH cover) - now that's also where the starter clutch mechanism is. That possibly could be the metal from the past if a tooth has been broken off.

The other thing that can happen there is that the stator can come loose - known to be a problem on some later (K5 on) machines (not so the earlier ones), but worth having the cover off and checking that stator bolt (centre of the alternator), as if it has come loose, that could be why you are turning over slowly.....

(If you put the bike on its mainstand on level ground you can get the LH cover off without loosing too much oil - at most 1/4 pint). If you do do this, just not the location of the 2 bolts with washers on as they need to go back in exactly the same place
Nothing to do.............all day to do it....I love retirement
