Hi all,

As you may know I am about to acquire another 1400..
My previous bike (Triumph Explorer 1200) used fully synthetic oil..

I know the consensus on here is that the 1400 uses a semi synthetic oil..

But I have 5 litres of this which I bought a while back...

Is there any reason I couldnt use it in the 1400 ?

It's JASO MA2 grade oil. It will work in 14. IMO.

KiwiCol

Dave Barmy used to use Silkolene from memory, what grade though is another question.

@Andre is the man for details on this subject.
😎  Always looking for the next corner.  😎

A good few stories of damaged/hardened oil deals from using fully synthetic oil.
I guess for 1 oil change your be ok but then go back to the right stuff .

Thanks Seth..
I am thinking I will buy the Silkolene Semi and mix it 50/50 with that..
Then it would be a 1/4 fully Synthetic..
My mates whos bikes can use fully synthetic are too precious about taking their bikes to a dealer for servicing to "risk" buying the oil off me, even at a discounted price !

grog

Speedy, i wouldnt mix it, waste of money, just use it, next service use semi. Just my opinion only.

Mick_J

I used a fully synthetic in my bike about 12 years ago (Cos I had some, same as you), didn't do any harm, bike still runs fine.
Keep the rubber side down.          Mick

@Speedy1959 I use this oil and no problems with it. But then, never opened up the engine. Here in my hot part of the world I use 10W40. But concerning prices of oil stuff right now, guess next time I´ll go for a cheaper fully syn; as long as it´s JASO MA2.

frenchgixxer

Give it a try as you have it. Bit of clutch slip would be the worst that MAY happen?
Question everything

Mal

Hello Speedy. I used fully synthetic in your old bike a few thousand miles ago. No adverse effects noticed since. Certainly no clutch slip!

What ever you decide to go with, just remember when you next do an oil change you're leaving a noticeable amount of the old stuff still in and around the motor and oil cooler.

;)
.

Hooli

From memory about 1.2ltr is left per oil change.

Hi Malcolm

I must admit it doesnt really make sense that these engines are so precious about modern oils...
On past bikes I have changed oil early due to (in my opinion) the over stretched changed intervals)..
10,000 miles on the Triumph.. I did it every 5,000.
So a 4,000 mile interval doesnt bother me really.

You are keeping Sophie very well. She looked very good last time I saw her.
