Fuel Pump Problem

I bought my GSX1400FE new but it has been in storage effectively for teh last few years. However, when I discovered the battery had failed 6 months ago, I bought a replacement and started the bike ok.

However, when I tried it the other day, it refused to start. Check spark and that was ok and initially thought it might be the old fuel in the tank causing problems. However, I noticed I couldn't hear the fuel pump start. Long story short, I eventually found the fuel pump was at fault.

I would have simply bought a replacement pump unit but realised that these are now quite hard to source. In desperation, I noticed that you could see some gear teeth looking down the outlet pipe and decided to give them a turn. After a few attempts, the pump started working again and appeared to have stuck possibly from a small amount of debris.

Will now put it all back again to check the bike fires up ok and will certainly be turning on the ignition each week to check the pump is still working. I thought others might benefit from this experience if they find their pump has stopped working.

That's the trouble with not using cars & bikes etc on a regular basis, things tend to seize up & rubber seals dry out and degrade

Just for info it is possible to just buy an after market pump similar to the one below, several other members on here have replaced them I believe

I run ebay pump for last 3 years now, no issues just louder than oem. I paid for it about 30€.

No problems with the Quantum pump either, direct drop in replacement.
I try to take one day at a time, however sometimes several days catch up with me at once.

I don't like leaving the GSX1400 unused but I regularly ride two other bikes and can't quite manage 3! I recently decided that leaving bikes (including the GSX1400) plugged into a smart charger all the time was bad for the batteries - I had two fail in 2 years on one of my bikes. So I now plug in each battery once a week to bring them up to full charge. As part of this routine, I will also switch on the ignition on the GSX1400 to also fire up the fuel pump to make sure it continues to work. For reference the bike has only done 10k miles from new and so the fuel pump has definitely not worn out!
