Air Hammer

Hi, thinking of getting an air hammer, anyone here got them for domestic use as opposed to work / industrial usage?  Suggestions would be welcome.   Also why do the call it an Air Hammer & not supply a hammer bit with the kit??

Col, to do what? Couple of choices depending on job to be done.

Well, it's actually for assisting the removal of hydraulic steering bracing bracket on an outboard engine, then again, suppose I could also use it for riveting stuff with the right bit in the end or just hitting things in general!

depends on the gun doesn't it?  I've got air rattle gun & it copes with that ok, not continuously though.

180L/M Free air Del & 125psi with 50L tank.

You don't tend to use rattle guns for very long, check the specs of the gun compared to your compressor

Yeah, theory says it should be fine, however, I know from past experience, even though the spec's are up to it, the air isn't.  It would need to be a small to med one, not use too much air.  I also wouldn't be running it continuously, it'd be in short bursts.
I don't want to spend big dollars for something that'll seldom get used.

Noisy bloody things, hate them. Good for getting stuck stuff out but. Will get a part number off the two we have tomorrow, work well if air let build up.

Some of the cordless impact drivers provide pretty good torque, may be an option? These also come with the option for drilling and chiselling tools.

Air tools are limited by the compressor that supplies them.

Are you talking about a pistol grip air chisel Col ?
If so l have one. Great for fast removal of damaged panel steel (no sparks) Cutting the tops out of 44 gallon drums. Have also used mine for removing floor tiles.
Unforgiving, dangerous and noisy. I always wear the thickest leather gloves l have when using it. Need a reasonable compressor to drive it.
If sparks are no issue l think you may be better off using a 1mm cut off disc on a 4" grinder.
Then should you just want to annoy the neighbours they come highly recommended

Eric, I have a cordless impact driver, that's not going to do the job I need done. 

Col, I need to re-use the part, it's just stuck, they all do it, so cut off disc is also a no no.   

I've been putting penetrating oil on it over a few days so hope that assists.  It's a taper fit shaft & salt water gets in there & salt powder forms in the micro gap making it extremely tight to remove.  They say to put grease on the shaft prior to assembly, think I'll go for Nickelslip myself.
There is also a new purpose built gear puller for this job, but it's in USA & costs a lot, not much chance of getting it either with the way freight is moving at the moment. I have a standard 2 leg gear puller which I may be able to adapt to accomplish the task, but if not, the air hammer comes into play, 'gently'  tapping this stuck bracket off. Failing that, I do have a 6lb sledge & when you hit something with that it stays hit!

That AT2050 is a beast alright. Big heavy duty for me though. Oddly enough, the air specs are great.

Got an inexpensive (read cheap) version today. Had a play with it (as ya do) n I'm happy with it.  Tried it on a couple of battery terminals of old batterys I have laying around, wee blast shoved them back into the case, so reckon it'll do for what I may need it for.
