This is cover solution I found on same website. IMO thermostat would be more practical solution, no worries after install
I have some similar looking stuff in SS, you reckon that's good enough for winter then?

:whatever: I don't know, I never used one of theese and I never ride under 10°C. Someone should try to measure oil temp with/without cover in cold weather and let us know is there any difference.

Sounds like a job for 'Super Andre!!'   Cerealy though, reckon he's the man for this.
😎  Always looking for the next corner.  😎

Nic, digital spring balance very good for adjusting head bearings. Just a few e bay bucks. Section 1, page 22 Haynes. Pin punch n hammer, 30 mm open ender. Works for me.

Irish in Oz

If the oil isn't going milky as seen in sight glass, I wouldn't worry about it, just more crap to go wrong.

I recently sold my Honda CB750, I think we all remember them, they had an oil tank on the right side with a big oil cap dipstick, no oil cooler. In winter I would do my usual 150K round trip and when i put the palm of my hand on the oil cap it was barely luke warm. I lived with it, what could you do, but the 14 has this big arse cooler, this has to mean the oil will be even colder than on the Honda unless the 14 run hotter than hell. I know how much condensation gets into Everything in my shed on a frosty morning, it gets into everything, rust runs amok.
Now having just bought a bike I have been lusting for for some years, I'd like to think I can do what's best for it. Anyway, this whole oil cooler thing has gone on long enough, I still have no definitive answers other than, in line thermo,or cover. I'll just leave it there, I'll probably end up with an oil temp gauge and report my finding somewhere down the track.

Grog, I'm not really sure what you're saying here, digital spring balance??? I don't have a Haynes nor would I ever get one after having one for the Honda where the pictures were so dark it was ridiculous.
I know how to adjust the bearings, I just need to back off the nut from where it is n I have a pretty good idea how tight/loose it has to be from where it is right now. One day I'll buy a 30mm ring spanner, for now I'll just take off the bars, once it's done, it's done

@Nic , spring scale (can be digital)

Nice try Col. I also don't ride in under 10° weather. Under 15° only if the itch is very strong. Plus I don't ride until after February 26. Too many drunks and crazys running around because of carnival.

This is a quote from the site of the guy who did the 2 aluminum covers thing mlivkovich posted above:

QuoteThe temperature is about 20 degrees Celsius, clear and the result is in a fully closed state.
It's about 100 ° C maximum when waiting for a traffic light, and 80 ° C (around 70km / h) when you start running.

Keeping 70 ° C to 75 ° C during high-speed driving at a temperature of 18 ° C (cruising at 100 km / h). It was at least 65 ° C.
It was around 55 ° C under similar conditions at national me, so would it be effective?

It can be assumed that the aluminum conducts heat a bit better than cardboard and who knows how much air still got through the holes in the aluminum plates.

Unfortunately I haven't seen anything about the temps with the installed thermostat on that site or anywhere else.

One piece of info for those who consider a thermostat: In closed position the Improved Racing bypasses the cooler by over 90% while the Mishimoto bypasses 75%.

It will be a while longer before I tackle the thermostat project. First I want a new oil cooler as I am not in the mood to touch the screws on the flimsy original oil cooler. Cooler, thermostat, AN-fittings, and getting new oil hoses attached by a hydraulic shop will cost over 600 €.

Thanks for the tutorial, I have one of those things, now where did I put it.
Half hour later::::
Oh FFS, I just found it, i'll give it a go tomorrow out of interest. Off to bedy bys now.

Agree Irish. As for spring balance, just the correct way to do it, dont have to do it a second time  :)

200-500 is a bloody big window.

Hooli

Never used a spring balance on mine, I just do it so it feels about right. Then once the bars etc are back on I check it just falls to the side when pushed away from centre.

mlivkovich

I found some pics of oil lines routing and thermostat, no more mysteries

Hooli

Nice find.

I still don't like it though.
