This is the only on-line forum I'm a member of, and in general most members on here are decent well adjusted helpful individuals.

I need to pick your collective brains, please...? On a non-bike matter.

Next door neighbour has a heating device located on his property. It's called a 'Samsung Smart Inverter". I presume it's an ASHP?

This contraption is the noisiest thing I have ever heard. It has been installed about 3 years now. Located on his property about 6 feet from a party fence, then our driveway then our home. a distance of about 14 feet. It runs approx 20 hours a day. The noise is heard in our living room (adjoining the drive). And all over our large garden. It's a pleasure to go outside when it's not running/humming away. A 6 feet fence is separating our property.

I bought a noise meter. Took several discrete readings. It hovers about 52-54db on full chat. The bloke is an absolute arsehole. We do not get along. The last time we spoke - I caught him spying/looking in my man cave. He got both barrels. You do not do this to me. That was about six months ago.

I contacted the council. They appeared as helpful as a fart in a spacesuit. And suggested I do my own homework - so I did.

I contacted one of the large on-line websites for these things. I got involved in an on-line chat. Making out I was interested in this heating systems. Turns out there is a limit of db42 one metre from a habitable window. Obviously 52-54 is slightly over. There is a tolerance of +5. When it reaches +10 it's an environmental issue. I've done loads of research online looking at forums etc. But, no first hand experience from chatting to anyone.

Has anyone experience good or bad with this type of heating systems?

The bloke as I said is an utter arsehole. He has the whole of his detached property to locate this thing. But, he choses to put it where it is. I'm gunning for him. Missus has tried to calm me down. Since retirement I'm about the home more now. this thing is starting to grate me big style...!!

Any help whatsoever would be gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks,

BB.

I used to repair a guys wheelchair who had a air heat pump system .
He was very happy with his system said it was much more efficient than his old gas boiler system and when I visited him it never seamed to noisy at all I nearly fitted a ground source heat pump but the cost and maintaince was too high at the time .the air source system was much more attractive but after close consideration we fitted solar panels as the returns were higher .
Hope this helps .
Having noise so close is not good if they aren't prepared to sort the problem is go round and disconnect it in the night .

Seth - thanks for that. I'm want to put a shovel through it. Or a very large screw driver in it to rip out the impeller blades. Or fill it with expanding foam. Missus on the other hand is more diplomatic. And as soon as I venture on his property - it would get nasty. Hence she wants me to through the environmental route - first off...!

Good luck with it then .
If the diplomatic route doesn't work a mishap could happen when your away on your holidays and nowhere near your home .
Friends are great like that  :onya:

Hi Bill

Acoustic screening is all you have, a big bloody hedge. Might even shadow the buggers garden if your lucky.  :onya:

Thanks for all replies. Going to contact council.

Failing that. Holiday. And some expanded foam appled by a mate.  :boogie:

Sound / noise is often viewed incorrectly.

Folk think it's like a %.
They think if you have 100db and add 4 you have 104 (correct)
and that you have gone up 4% (incorrect).
db are measured in a logarithmic scale and even a few db gain can be a lot louder.

EG: I have a bike that came out of the factory at 90db.
It has new cans and has been retested at 94db.
The 4db gain is a lot louder than a 4.5% numerical figure suggests.

Pretty much right. The dB scale is logarithmic because human ears respond (roughly) that way. Every 10dB increase feels, to a human ear, approximately like a doubling of volume.

The 52 to 54dB we are talking about here is about equivalent to leaving near a road with light traffic on it. Personally I think the suggestion of growing a tall hedge is a good idea, it's probably the most likely to achieve a result.

Either that or bite the bullet and move house.

How long does a hedge take to grow in uk?

Not slightly, it's WELL over.

Bugger planting a hedge or moving, you don't have to put up with that.

3db is double, so if 42 is the limit that makes 52-54 16x louder.
Keep the rubber side down.          Mick

I've been to Motorhead and AC/DC concerts and I think they where over 110db. Just turn the radio up and you won't hear it.
