As you may be aware its kinda hot here in Scotland would go as baw sweaty  and Ive tried to lighten my gear as much as possible - got every vent open that I can - but still got leather strides, boots and a light jacket . . . . yip im hot but Im not willing to take a chance as I commute mostly on the motorway (highway to some) and as discussed in another thread driving standards are going down

So imagine my shock when I witnessed today on the M74 a HD  with ape hangers wearing  a leather waistcoat - denims and an open face lid - everyone to there own but would hate to think of the state of the fella if he comes off

Each to there own and all that stuff but fook no

It's called the Darwin theory
Natural selection with sort it out .
Only problem will be if he comes off as it costs us all to sort his injuries.
I'm amazed when it gets hot of when in Europe the number if biker you see with out gloves.
I have a pair of fully ce marked summer gloves that have mesh in the parts that wouldn't be needed in a crash and I've never had hot hands even when filtering in 40+° of heat in Europe.

Dress for the slide
Not the ride.
Some people don't care.
When they fall off they,ll be moaning and crying about the pain :jack:

During hot days here, the number of bikers I see dressed appropriately are in the minority.  A few weeks ago I got tugged for a roadside check (Bike and docs).  While I was waiting for them to check exhaust emissions they pulled over an R1 rider....who was wearing T shirt, shorts and flip flops ffs!  The Police said nothing to him about the way he was dressed!  :whatever:   Guy was in his late 30's ... would have thought he would have known better but there you go....

They check for roadside emissions by you?
What happens if you fail?
No Nct/ mot for bikes here :clapping:

Not only emissions, but also check for modifications that are not CE approved/certified, non reported accident damage as well as checking the decibel output of the exhaust!  Non compliance is an immediate fine, and if it's serious they can put you off the road there and then.  These guys are technical experts supported by the police... bit of a pain to be honest but they were very polite and took a real interest in the 14... they only took 20 mins so no biggie in the end.

If you are going to run out of fuel, do it in your garage.

It's only a short walk to the kettle.

That's extremely common to see here. I'd see at least one most days, and more when out riding on weekends.

The term used here is "squids."

I'm a great believer in "each to his own" and not having others (government) make restrictions to "protect" us.

But yeah, not for me.

Stupid
Quick
Underdressed
Imminently
Dead

An extremely rare animal with a short lifespan. Usually a new sport bike enthusiast with the reasoning of a lunatic, whom you might see thrashing on an R1 wearing sandals, shorts, and a tee.
When found lying motionless on the pavement, this creature transforms itself into a stream of blood, exposed flesh, and broken limbs. Hence the squid moniker.

Couple of theories

1.  to describe the similarity in looks between a crashed motorcycle rider who was not wearing the correct protective attire and the squid sea creature.

2.
Stupid
Quick
Underdressed
Imminently
Dead

3. (which I think the more likely derivation

QuoteThe term "squid" has been used to refer to the US Navy for several decades and many sailors in the 1960's rode motorcycles for transportation. However, the most likely origin of squid, when using the term in relation to a squid motorcycle riders, may link back to surfing in California.

The term "squid" was used by surfers when referring to new young surfers who were riding all over the waves, squirreling around without control. The term was used as a contraction of the words squirrely and kid. The squid sea creature is also unable to easily control movement and must come to nearly a stop in order to change direction before accelerating again.

This meaning was then carried over to the motorcycle community, beginning at the racetracks. When new motorcycle riders were spotted on the racetrack lacking control over the lines that they were riding the squid slang definition was used, they were officially now "motorcycle squids".

It did not take long for squid slang to move from the racetrack out to the streets, where the meaning of the word was somewhat expanded to include almost any rider who lacks common sense either in relation to their riding display, or in their lack of suitable riding attire for the conditions. Quite often motorcycle squid are guilty of both crimes.

I saw a coupe yesterday, ZZR1100 and shorts, t shirt and no gloves, it's nuts.  On the other hand I was sweating like Rolf Harris outside a girls school.

just looking at uk super temps. 30 here is really fairly nice. riders without protection just annoys me. some queenslanders here will set me straight but i reckon in summer 75% of riders have shorts, t shirts etc. i always suit up, gloves etc. i use open face helmets, always have, so i guess you can shoot me down for careless. never ride without armoured jacket, gloves , boots. as far as open face, much more vision, anyone want a shoei full face, very nice helmet, 800 when new, no sideways vision. just my way

Andre

Just switched from open face helmet to a full Nolan N87. The N87 has a great field of vision, def not less than open face! Rated 4 stars on Sharp test but beats a 5 star helmet (HJC IS-17) narrowly on a German safety test. Price starts at 160€. Ventilation is good. Very quiet compared to the open face. Only annoying thing is that I have to take it off for a smoke.
