Bought some vernier calipers as my bike passed it's M.O.T with two advisories, chain was out of alignment and too tight, so used them too set the rear wheel correctly(4mm out). As other posts have pointed out DO NOT rely on the swing arm markings. I measured from where the adjuster bolt sits , from the end of the swing arm to the edge of the adjuster block.

never used the adjuster marks on the swingarm, on customers bikes I used a wheel alignment jig (2 long straight edges clamped to the rear wheel) to get the wheels straight. and when you check the adjuster marks they where always out  :whatever:

Even more so once you tighten the axle nut, so much flex.

Best allrounder I've ever owned 👍

Hooli

I just look that the chain runs straight as it comes off the sprocket

Have checked, measured and my marks are spot on. Guess someone had to be lucky. Having said that, just on 20 th ks since chain has needed adjusting. EK are great chains.

Don't know what make of chain mine is, but it is the original from when I bought BIG SOOZ as she only had 600 miles on her, she's now approaching 20,000 miles . I will look at necessary replacements when I service her and see what I need.

My marks are also spot on.. I even used a vernier caliper to check each side..

Same here, use the marks, check with vernier and eyeball the chain is straight, all lines up.
I try to take one day at a time, however sometimes several days catch up with me at once.

My marks are correct as well, did check with vernier

KiwiCol

I use a vernier to set the distance, but the marks also match up, guess they built a few true.
😎  Always looking for the next corner.  😎

Raining here. Thought I'd have a day in the shed. Still haven't got it wired up properly yet so just have 5 lights on a string hung up. Not great. Realised they are designed so they can be linked up with multiple sets, so I went into town and bought a second set. Much better.  It's brighter in there now with 2 sets and the doors closed than it was with them open and 1 set.

2 sets is 10 x 9W LED, works better than it sounds.

Hooli

I'm not sure I've ever used or checked my swingarm marks.
I set the chain straight as it comes off the top of the sprocket when I fit a new chain & then count the flats any time I turn the adjusters so they stay aligned.

grog

I agree Hooli. Not such a big deal, just needs to running true on sprocket. I've used marks, then measured, then looked at chain running over sprocket. My dose of-gear oil, love that sound of well oiled chain running true. No adjust in 20th ks, must bedoing something right😂

Hooli

The same trick worked to get my Hornet riding straight too. Follow the swing arm marks & it goes down the road sideways, but I think it's bent somewhere rather than bad marks. Not worked out where, but I suspect the swingarm mount area as everything else looks straight by eye.

if you measure from the end of the swingarm to the centre of the spindle you can get it lined up but ive seen on some bikes where the swingarm legs are different lengths !!!!!  so it puts the wheel out. an alignment jig is the best way as it gets both wheels bang on in line, but most people don't have one.  so another way is to measure from the centre of the wheel spindle to the centre of the swingarm pivot bolt. can be awkward with exhausts in the way but you do get an accurate measurement  :onya:
