Replacement Generator and Reg/Rec (courtesy of KTMJunkie)

I have changed mine twice now and unless you buy a genuine Suzuki one with a Suzuki price tag it will not come with the plug fitted . The reason for this is the wires have to be passed through the rubber grommet and the Generator fits many different models so this is not supplied. You do get the plug but you have to fit it yourself. I’ve found that it's best to crimp and solder the connections otherwise you may have the trouble I had the first time when I only crimped the connection which after time came loose causing another Generator to burn out.

I think that the recon Generator you need is the G4, which costs £60

They do sell replacement Reg/Recs too if you should need one, both times I didn't â€" the model you would need would be the RR55 I believe.

This is also known as a Mosfet and is a quality piece of kit, not prone to overheating like the old diode style reg/rec's that Suzuki fit as OEM. These come in kit form with both parts of a replacement connector block, its an absolute doddle to fit and looks "factory" when its done.

If you want something more OEM and Suzuki are out of stock then another option is the Tour Max RGU-220 which fits nearly all Yamaha's, the one recommended for the GSX1400 is the one for a XVS1100 03/04 and is EXACTLY the same as OEM. Plugs straight in without having to cut your loom up (like with an electrex one).

Hi all,

Not really a '14 specific one, but rather a more general information I'm looking for. I tried not to start yet another thread for a not-that-important question, but rather an existing one which is closed enough and directly related.

So the basic question is:
What would happen if, for some reason, two of the three wires coming out of the generator are swapped in the three way connector that will then lead to the Reg/Rec?
Electronically, swapping two wires will lead to the phase rotation (a.k.a. phase sequence) to be reversed -- as if the alternator would rotate in the other direction.
Will the Reg/Rec operation or performance be affected ? I think not, at least not a regular diode based one such as the one found on the '14. What about the Mosfet based one (if it works differently?)

It won't matter at all, the stator is AC so not directional.

I took no notice of which wire went where when replacing the plug for the three yellow wires & have had no problems for the years since. It's never mattered when rewiring old heaps either.

Had a drain issue the other week so put a fresh rectifier on. After only a few days it melted so bought another. It was faultless last week but today after leaving it for the weekend it was flat again. Freshly charged battery, only getting 12.3v at idle. Surely not another dodgy rectifier???

Even with throttle I'm barely getting over 12.4v. If the rectifier is grounded through the bolts and there is a 12v feed to the battery from it, surely it could only be a faulty  ground wire? Although when checked I was getting 12v from the terminal that plugs into it? Would that be coming from the battery? Why would something designed to output get a 12v feed? Unless that was just battery voltage and uses that line to charge from rectifier output? 🤷🏼�♂️

Sounds like your stator is on the way out, have you checked the voltage from the 3 wires?

Thanks for the reply. I have checked the AC and all pulling 15+ at idle. I replaced the battery/stator/rectifier a few weeks ago when the issues started. Checked everything multiple times now and it's doing my head in!

The below is from a post by Hooli, he's had a lot of experience with charging systems on the 14.  Sounds like yours is a bit low. 



"run the bike up with the stator unplugged & checked for AC voltage between each yellow wire? should be 50-60v at 5k rpm from memory. I think I saw about 20v at idle when I tested a good one."

Cheers for that. I'm pretty sure my readings were as my Haynes manual instructed but I'll double check tonight when I'm back from work.

I don't think the GSX one is too bad from what I hear, but some are terrible.

I always buy the Haynes when I get a new bike, they are not as bad as some make out, some chapters take a coupla reads.
The GSX one helped me a lot.

Checked today and I'm getting 55-60v @ 5000rpm... 🤷🏼 Ordered a spare plug so I can check actual rectifier output rather than taking a reading from the battery. The search continues! 😂😂

The hyines manual for the gsx1400 has several faults

Why not go to the downloads section here and get the full suzuki factory workshop manual with all updates for all years and all here for free ?
only a slightly modified gsx1400
oh and a standard one too
