Exhaust system

No arguing about the weight saving and its advantages of the 4-1 Akra. More HP (even at 500 rpm more) over Standard is also a nice thing to have.

Here is a fair comparison of 4 exhaust systems as they were all done on the same dyno, on the same day.

Original  4-2 (Cat), original air filter
81,7 Kw (111 HP) at 7162 rpm 126,3 Nm at 5656 rpm

Open Pipes and collector, Takkoni 4-2, K&N air filter
87,4 Kw (118.8 HP) at 7508 rpm und 128.7 Nm at 5356 rpm

Akrapovic 4-1, complete system, K&N air filter
90,3 Kw (122,7 HP) at 7764 rpm 122,0 Nm at 5868 rpm

MAB Power 4-4, complete system, K&N air filter
90.5 Kw (123 HP) at 7755 rpm, 124,6 Nm at 5707 rpm

The torque winner is a 4-2 with open headers.  6.7 Nm more torque at 500 rpm less compared to the Akra 4-1. Even a little more HP at lower rpm than the standard. 4 HP less than the Akra but at lower rpm (250). I have no idea how much less that 4-2 weighs than the standard but certainly less (not hard to achieve).

A guy who has had various exhaust systems on his 14 (and dynoed them) says that the 4-1s all need more rpm for the HP and torque. 4-2s give you more torque in low/mid range (most ride their 14 in these ranges) he says.

Do the above bikes have a PC?

I believe the owner of the standard that there is no PC on his.

I did talk to MAB Power and they claim that no adjustment of the A/F maps is needed with their systems and the above results are within their claims of increased HP (10+ HP guaranteed). So probably no PC on that one either.

I have no infos on the Akra or the open header/Takkoni regarding PC.

Hope there is something in the above to heat up the kettle  :stir:

Nice comparison Andre!

Have to admit... the standard set up (4-2) delivers more than enough power and torque for me..   if Id wanted something with more power I would not be riding a 14!   and I like the wheelbarrow look and shape/size of the cans :whistling:

the only 'complaint' I have is that the standard setup is a bit quiet .... cant change that cos of the EU regs strictly applied here in Austria!

What? You are not allowed to fit a pair of cans?

Andre

You are allowed to put on a pair of cans or even convert to a 4-1 system as long as the cans have an E-number (in Italy you have to carry a certified document for the exhaust too). Of cause they still have to match the the decibels on the VIN plate. If I recall correctly, mine says 88 dB at 3400 rpm. The cobs do give 5 dB for measurement error.

ARH

Andre is right.. the issue is to find a manufacturer that supplies cans with the needed Eu certification.  I looked and shopped about and really found very little.   The BS type approval is not accepted here and suppliers like Delkevic don't want the hassle of getting type approvals for EU. So.... I'm gubbed for choices.  :whatever:

So can't you just stick a pair of cans on and plead ignorance? Heck - first thing I did when I got my 14 was to dump the ocean going liner type silencers. Still stuck in the loft in my garage 10 years later. collecting dust.. :whistling:

I've got OEM headers (for looks). Delkevic collector. And about to order some Delkevic tri-oval cans. Had a pair of Beowulf cans fitted all the time - I just fancy a change.

Basil... for sure you can stick on a set of cans and hope for the best... but if stopped, it's a big fine and bike off the road until you prove the bike is back in spec.  Worst case is you are walking home....
And you can believe.... they have teams of inspectors working with the police on roadside checks to ensure compliance.
At least you don't have that shit to put up with in the uk!

Torque winner, even highly restricted, is JSR 4-1-2 system, sreet legal, emissiom approved, MOT approved, 137.84 Nm (in papers). :happy1:

Andre

@T 24 JSR 4-1-2 system, never heard of it. Google is not much help, only found some for quads. Got a link?

@Andre: You can't find anything of JSR from internet, it is very small and local, my own "back yard brand", turbo repairs and modifications, turbo kits for boats, cars and motorbikes, propellers, silencers for guns,, what ever.
That 4-1-2 and 137.84 Nm was driven with 0.2 bar for MOT certificate.
0.7 bar did 185 Nm, 0.9 bar.. I dont know.. And after this winter cam swap I really dont know...

Andre

Thanks for the explanation :) Thought that there was a turbo in the game. Nice standard cans :onya:

@ARH
There are some slip-ons with ABE/E-number for our wheelbarrows:

BOS Carbon-Steel
GPR Trevale Edelstahl
Eagle MACH7 Alu
GPR Furore Nero
Cobra Hypershots XL "Black plus"
HURRIC Supersport (black or alu)

If I were to change cans (I won't) I would go for the BOS. Based on the posts in a German 14-forum they are high quality and have a good sound with the db-eaters in them. They are on the silent sound side and stay there better than others over time.

Sound is supposed to be similar to this type of mod by Jacoq. I wouldn't do this mod as you could get a fine for tempering! As a side note, in Germany we get points besides monetary fines. Collecting points will result in your drivers license revoked. It may costs you thousands to get it back.

Great work - I was thinking of getting a bazooka and doing that for my K 5 - yes I would love to convert to twin but then wouldn't get the bike down the side of the house into the garage !  :smile2:

They also don't give you the performance DEcrease as some other slip-ons do. More the contrary.

On the various shops they are said to be black but they are more titanium-gray than black (see pics).
They can be had at louis.at Have them send to the louis shop (2 of them in Vienna) and you can check them out there before you take them (or not).
