Hi guys, just joined. My Drivers license says my names Robert. My Friends and family been calling me Fred since the day I was born.
Greetings from far north queensland, Australia.
About 6 months ago I purchased a blue an white 2002 K2 1400 gsx. The bike had 37000 on the clock an was in perfect condition.
Its only had 2 owners and came with all the service records, manuals. All original parts. Original pipes still wrapped in blankets, original all new engine side covers, original handle bars. Gaskets and seals I,d need for future services. Original tank decals and paint details should they ever be needed. It came with yoshimura system and basically the best of everything. That's been swapped from new and the original parts kept.
I love this bike its amazing, and more then a little bit scary, if anything its a bit hard around town. The speed limits 50klm.
And to me that seems to be revving to high for first, yet wants to go 80 at second.
I took it for a service about 2 months ago and asked them to check and replace everything, explained id just brought it and
wanted to make sure everythings ok. It passed with flying colors. Actually the owner, mechanic, and sales rep offered to buy it.
BBBBBut
Recently I can only assume I brought a bad batch of fuel (common problem here in cyclone season).
First my bike started surging at 100 klm, just slightly. And within 2 days things have got way worse. I,ve had water in the fuel before in other bikes and this felt the same with the 1400.
But ive never had fuel injection.
So Ive removed and flipped the fuel tank twice. Drained and cleaned it Twice. Was a little water and rust in fuel tank.
Ive pulled out and cleaned the fuel pump and tea bag, which actually wasn't bad. I,ve cleaned the air filter.
I had the bike starting again but running shocking, missing backfiring, blowing soot.Ive kept addin clean fuel with injector cleaner added.
And although still running like a cut cat started to run smoother and blow less smoke, In the meantime I kept cleanin an replacing sooty plugs.
Well unreal all of the sudden it went the other extreme, No more sooty black smoke. Its backfiring a steady stream of blue flame a foot outta the exhaust pipes.
I,m seriously starting to feel like its haunted. I love this bike, but im at my wits end. Cost me offer 600 for a oil change here.
I took it to a bush mechanic today that found a split in a hose that runs along the fuel rail and i thought yehar hes found the problem.
He replaced the hose. Then wanted to check a couple other things. As far as I know all he did was pull out the battery and undo and check a couple connections. Well moral of the story is now, I have the bike back. Turns over wont start. Warning lights all show ok, theres spark at the plugs, theres fuel , theres compression. Theres air. What am I missing??
Can someone please help, I don't wanta have to sell a kidney to pay for a mechanic

There will be more experienced guys to help but I had a similar problem turned out to be a cracked coil pack
Worth a look 😉

Welcome  :hat:

Checked the oil level? Could be too high.
Did the bike fall on its side recently?

Did you check for oil in the air box while you changed the filter? Take out the plug on one of the tubes hanging down by the mainstand. It is part of the engine breather system and comes out from the left lower corner of the air box. If it has never been drained, oil may start to get into the box and the air-intake of the throttle body.

Check fuel pressure as pressure regulator may be defective.

Welcome Fred.
Five years ago I had similar problems in my K2. At last I found it. There were several bad, oxidated groundings. Ecu-throttlebody-engine itself-battery..
Check groundings.

Gidday Fred, nice to have you along.  Your bike sounds like it's getting worse rather than getting better.  The guys here will sort it with you - for sure.
😎  Always looking for the next corner.  😎

Hi  :hat: Thanks heaps guys, this forums so helpful.
:boogie: Well problems solved, and ya wouldn't believe how stupid I feel. I rang the mechanic this morning.
Showed him a photo of the fuel samples I,d drained from my tank. He looked at the fuel and hes first words were "oh fuck".
I,d told him what id done, several times. Said ive cleaned the fuels system so many times, I,ve become personally attached to it.
He asked me if id changed the plugs?? I thought what a silly question. He changed the plugs only 1200 klm ago at last service.
I said no. But ive probably cleaned them at least seven times during the last few days, at every time I stripped the system.
Same thing ive been doing with sparkplugs since I was kid on a dirt bike.
He said NO we don't clean plugs anymore. He personally hasn't cleaned a plug for years. He basically said. If the plugs dirty
toss it, Its cactus. Replace it with new ones.
I was pretty sceptical, honestly thought it was bullshit myself. But Ive tried everything else and the next step was to tackle
the injectors. So I lashed out the 50 bucks for 4 plugs.
Couldn't believe instant fix. Bike back to purring like a kitten. Going better then it ever did. All for a lousy plug.
I,m taking that mechanic a bottle of bourbon tomorrow. That shop could quite easily have said " hey bring it in and we,ll have a look.
And charged me hundreds of dollars, and I would have happily paid. Instead he gave me a five minute fix over the phone for free.
Happy new year folks, hope ya all feeling as happy as I am right now

Andre

Glad that got sorted. Cheers to the mechanic  :onya:. On to riding. :boogie:

What a Top bloke. Excellent result, glad she's all sorted  :onya:
Nothing to do.............all day to do it....I love retirement

A good call from your Mechanic, I was inclined to blame your injectors but I've been caught with plugs on the 14 before, my old mechanic was using a slightly colder plug than standard which causes a bit of fuel residue to coat the ceramic insulator and make it fail.

Water has a tendency to collect in the back of the tank.

I'm glad to hear that you have got it sorted.

Mister Fishfinger

Good for you, taking the guy a bottle of bourbon as a thank you.

You didn't have to do it, many people would not have bothered, but it's the right thing to do.

Now you can enjoy your bike!
