Well got phone call from dealer. Seems it was the ECU, they fitted it yesterday and took it on a test.
Keeping it till Monday to test again.

Glad it's them paying!!

I've never heard of a faulty ECU on these before, I wonder if it was the actual ECU or just a dodgy pin to the connector?

I'm a bit sceptical myself. I would have done a con check of all connections first.
But hey hoy at least it's fixed and I'll hopefully catch a few good days before winter.

The skepticism sits deep, not just with this issue. Glad I have the time and means to do the work myself.

Very hard for the garages to find and keep good experienced Mechatronics.  I have one just around the corner who has a one man back-alley thing going. Always very busy. I observed cars coming from afar, often by transport. If I have an electronic issue I can't solve with your help, he will be my go-to guy as electronics is his specialty.

My best friend has one he goes to. Was the head mechanic for a large Mercedes dealership before he threw in the towel and started his one man garage. He often just takes a quick look and tells my friend how he can fix it himself - no charge and it works. Guys like that usually have a hard time with the inner workings of a dealership.
