Electrical/Starter problem

Just started having an issue starting the bike. Nearly every time the bike is left more than 10 mins turn ignition on, wait for fuel pump to finish priming, push start button pump primes again instead of turning over. Put a new clutch switch on but not that as sometimes won't start when the wires are bridged with a paperclip. When it does start, a few times before it catches it clicks/chatters as though there is a bad connection somewhere. I have sprayed contact spray in all connections I can see including both handlebar switches. Battery was new a couple of years ago and when it finally catches seems to turn over fast enough. Any help would be appreciated

Shaun

Sounds like a daft battery to me.

After pressing the start button;   do the dials make a full sweep?

Hadn't noticed so just went outside to try. Ignition on, wait for pump to prime. On pressing button pump primes again but no sweep. Press button again just priming noise again till button is released (accompanying F! light). Turn ignition off to reset F1, tried again bike started!!

test your battery. stick a multimeter on it, check volts when you try to start. 9.5 is accepted lower limit.

Problem is back and tried two different fully charged batteries. Exactly same symptoms but now won't start at all instead of occasionally. Thinking connections on/duff starter relay or starter motor. F1 light on and fuel pump priming every time the starter button is pressed even though the pump has primed on ignition. Would like to have the Datatool 3 removed as I know these have caused issues but had stupid prices for removal.

Will be fetching bike back from MOT place tomorrow as Passed MOT but won't start :embarrassed:

Have you tried the clutch switch?

If you have aftermarket Chinese levers on, they can play up if the lever position is on 1 or 2.

Blubber

That's disappointing  :cry2:

Good luck 🍀

New clutch switch fitted as had some initial success joining wires with paperclip (see original post).Have the chinese levers on but noticed this when they were originally fitted so set on number 3. Haven't done any testing as yet, still need to get bike back. Wonder if I could bridge the solenoid terminals to get it started provided it is that at fault

You mentioned it looked like a bad connection and contact spray bombed it.

Have you checked the big black wire going from the battery to the frame / engine for corrosion?

I once had a earth strap fail, causing weird errors.

I think you can, have heard of solenoids failing before but only on rare occasions. But would only try as a last resort

Other things you could try before that:
- side stand switch (bridge out same as clutch switch)
- pull apart the big grey plug under the LH side panel and spray with contact cleaner
- test the kill switch. If you trace the wires down into the headlamp shell, you can bridge across the 2 kill switch wires with a paper clip at the back of the plug. Found this to be the problem with TonyB's bike a few months ago when the dials would sweep, bu the engine wouldn't turn.

If you have a PCIII, try disconnecting that and seeing if she starts, PCIII's can lose their map and cause starting issues also
Nothing to do.............all day to do it....I love retirement
