My 2007 Gsx1400 has started to emit a real burning oil smell.

It has done 77000 kms, has never been ridden hard and gets an oil change every 5000 kms.

Noticed recently that oil required a top up of 500 mls. No other symptoms of mechanical breakdown- no rattles. Pulls like it always did...

If a car was doing the same thing I'd think worn rings but I've been told the bike should be good for 100000 km without such a problem....

If you have a look these bikes are good for a lot more than 100k-kms there are people with more than 300k+miles on them still going strong,
I gather you've had a look around the engine for leaks they can leak from the main valve cover seal & bolt seals (If so while valve cover is off you can check valve clearance's),
Is it blowing excessive smoke from exhaust to indicate worn rings (Very unlikely) with so little kms.

A strange one Mate, also strange oil needed topping, unusual on these, to my knowledge. Oil leak onto exhaust somewhere? Breather hose not collapsed, blocked etc. Have you drained air box lately, little hose that hangs down with plug in it. Do you use gear oil on chain? That stinks, reason why use VMX Castrol, no smell.

Might be worth checking the under the pairs covers and reeds as there is a couple small seals under the rocker cover that can go hard and leak (also don't like some fully synthetic motorcycle oil's)

oh and a standard one too

Reckon thats a great call Seth, forgot about that one👍Oil straight into exhaust.

Hooli

Check your oil cooler, the standard ones fail in the bottom corners. Normally the LH side.

Also worth checking the hoses to it, I've had the crimps for the Flexi sections fail.

Oh and a simple one, the filter still tight isn't it? I've seen one randomly come loose on another bike so it can happen if not nipped up enough.

It's getting more common and can cause some serious problems including burnt/damaged valves .

Question? Ive had pairs intake hose blocked off 10 yrs. Im thinking maybe replace those seals. If i take valves out, do i really need to buy new covers. I cant see any reason. Rip all hoses out, block off both covers and air box, plug vac hose, job done? Am i correct?Thank You for advice.

seth

The small pairs seals are on top of the head so you'd only need to remove the rocker cover .
As for removing the pairs system it's always good practice to remove the reed valves as the pressure still changes on them every rev of the motor and gave been known to snap off and cause big damage to the exhaust valves .
I removed the reed valves but refitted the mounting block with It's seals them fitted the cover plates with a little sealer .
Don't all 3 of ours more than 10 years ago never a problem.
Removing all the rest of the pairs system really tidied up the top of the engine and the airbox mod is 2 screws all very easy stuff .start to finish an hour max

@seth can you let me know what the air box mod is please? It's a new one on me

@Will14
It's just bolts or bungs fitted to the holes in the airbox when all the popes associated with the pairs system are removed
I used a couple of small bolts to re seal the holes So not really a mod as such .
Not doing this lets unfiltered air and the wrong amount of air into the airbox for the fuel map .
The other thing that needs blocked again I used a small bolt if the extra vacuum hose off my bed 2 throttle body that activates the whole pairs system .
It's all very much more simple than it sounds and the better pair removal kits has everything you need contained in it .

Close but no cigar...

The extra pipe comes off no3 TB, it's ideal for running a scottoiler off

@seth Ah right, I've done that but thought I had missed out on another mod, thanks for the reply though. Just an after thought, there is just one pipe to the air box that needs to be blanked off isn't there? I only ask as my bike seems to be getting too much air, I have removed all the pairs system but get quite a bit of popping from the exhaust can's at idle

Thanks

seth

Yes I think only 1 to block off
I have 2 done as I ran a modded plate instead of the tower on the engine breather and added a filter to it rather than run a pipe to the airbox.
That said I've since removed the airbox and run pod filters too .
Popping could be a few things .
I'd check the vacuum hoses as they can crack and that causes rough running at low revs .
You might also look at checking and resetting the tps &stps then balancing the throttle bodies as this can all help smoother running.
And finally do the back plate mod and advance the timing to 3-4° there's a full how to on the org .
Good luck

Check the down pipes are tight on the head and that your pairs removal is air tight too. Air leaks into the exhaust will cause popping on the overrun.
