Cleaning/painting frame

So apart from giving the bike a good service and a good clean, I am wanting to get the frame looking a bit better, what are some things I can do to remove the rust spots and repaint it?

I am going to try and strip as much off as I can to do it but I won't be able to remove the engine or any cables as I'm don't have much experience, and don't fully trust myself to be able to put it back together.

Please let me know your ideas on things I can do, thanks

Wash it, rust killer & smooth hammerite. You won't see any of that when it's together so no need for a brilliant finish.

I'd get the seat recovered, water damage to the foam ruins them quite quickly so they never as comfy again. Someone like Grizzey Adams on facebook would do a good job.

Yeah, well . . . .    first idea is to drop it round to Barmy, but he may no be best pleased with that idea. 

I'd say just take your time, it's a big job if you're thinking of getting it all looking nice. Do a small area at a time that way you just have a few parts to put back on. Having said that, pulling the whole lot apart does make it easier to get in everywhere. Plenty of help here to put it back together.

It all really depends on what you want out of it in the end & if you still need it rideable during the process.

The best way is to drop the engine out and have the frame blasted and powder coated or painted.  It's not a difficult task to do on your own, have a search on the site as Froudy has done it to his bike, or drop him a PM I'm sure he will help you.

It was my daily runner for 2 years and I never had it off the road, then got a car and put it in the garage for near two years without cleaning it properly. Just been sat there so trying to get it back to good running order, not in any rush so can take my time doing bits.

Just need to be careful that what ever I do I can put it back together again !

You'll need to try harder to have the tattiest bike on the forum, I used mine like that for about 12 years & it shows.

Have a look in the downloads section (see top menu) and start by grabbing yourself a copy of the relevant workshop manual/s for your year model. Most of what you'll need is there and then you can ask any additional questions here.

I would strongly urge you to do as @mjgt suggests, otherwise anything you do will look 'half-arsed' and also won't last properly as it just isn't possible to reach all the rusty/corroding bits. Then that will continue and any paint applied over the top will lift.
In the longer term you'll be very happy you made the effort to do it properly.

Yes things like that can be very daunting (especially to me).  And on some forum people are less than helpful with that sort of thing BUT in my experience the people here are VERY helpful and want to see fellow members saving and enjoying our favourite bikes.

I agree with others. It needs a bit of work. Either forget it or do it properly. Half measure will achieve not a lot. IMO.
