Idle speed too high.

Hi everyone.

Once again I could use some advice if you don't mind.  My K3 with 65000 miles runs very nice and smoothly.  It starts normally, and the cold start seems to work correctly in that it runs at a slightly higher RPM, then settles back to 1100 rpm after a few seconds.

However tickover is 2500 / 3000 rpm when hot.  The Idle adjust screw was seized.  So I popped the throttle bodies off cleaned and freed off the adjuster and all the other mechanisms.  I put it back together and the throttle is smoother than its been for a while, and the throttle shuts with a nice click each time.  Initially I thought I had cured the issue.  However after a 25 miles run, I realised the tick over was back up to 3000rpm.  I could, if I shut the throttle forcibly reduce it by a little.  So I double checked the throttle cables-  they were fine.  In fact I took the throttle cables off the twist grip to eliminate the twist grip completely.  When I got back today, I got the Haynes manual out and it suggested checking the input voltages to the EOT sensor and the TPS sensor.  These checked out fine, as did the resistance of the EOT sensor itself.  The only thing I did notice was that the hose to the PAIR control valve was dislodged.  Would that hose being disconnected cause a higher tick over?  I have put the bike back together and it starts and ticks over correctly now, but then it has cooled down.  I guess I do need to take it out for another run but that is going to have to wait until tomorrow as I have other list of jobs to do as decreed by her indoors.

If anyone might have any experience of similar issues, I'd love to hear them.  As always your collective knowledge is much appreciated.

Stay safe

I have a 2003 GSX1400 owned since new (Blue and White of course).  I have a 1977 Suzuki GT380 café racer and A Japanese import Yamaha XG250 Tricker.  I'm interested in anything mechanical.  Was an aircraft technician / inspector, but I took early retirement - because I could!

Sounds like you've nailed it already Chip. That small hose being off, would allow more air into the system.
😎  Always looking for the next corner.  😎

Hi Kiwi col.

Thanks for your comment.  In fact I decided to ignore the missus (which is a bit risky) and took the bike out for a test run tonight.  It seems to have been a complete success!  So it was the dislodged pipe line.

I am now in the doghouse, but at least my bikes working!  :)

Thanks again. Keep safe.
