Well I travelled into wales to get a ride on an MT09, here's what happened.
After filling in all the forms and signing my life away I was taken out to the bike.  All new Yamaha's now come with keyless operation so the dealer showed me how to get things started.  There is a large Gas hob knob where the key would normally go and the idea is (just like a gas hob) you press the knob in to start the electrics (just like a gas hob) and when the TFT lights up you turn it to right for on.  We tried that and nothing happened.
So the usual checks were carried out, is it the right key, yes.  Is it close to the bike, yes.  Have we pressed the hob on, yes.  Shall we call the workshop manager out, yes.  Did he fix it, no.  Turns out that the day before some kid had tried to start the bike and turned the cooker hob knob (try saying that after a few pints)  to the right and snapped off the internal end stop so it had rotated all the way round and disabled the bike.  Not good if you parked up and left it alone for a couple of hours only to find you cant get home cos of a little turd pissing about with your bike.  I know that bikes can be disabled in loads of ways but allowing the ignition switch to rotate past the end stop is pretty poor.  When they have it fixed (the whole ignition switch assembly needs to be removed to gain access) they will let me know and I'll go for Pt 2.
Keep the rubber side down.          Mick

What are Yamaha thinking? A hob knob is way too crumbly...a ginger nut is the way to go.
I foresee a worldwide recall of bikes.
There's always room in the world for a bit more tolerance and kindness.

Hmmmmm an interesting read 🫣
Now I can't wait for part 2 🤔

Roy I've tried hobknobs and I'm not a fan. I do like Anzac bikkies though 😋

Big effort for nothing Mick. Cant see the point in keyless. Diavel had it, i was forever leaving it in a pocket, sat it on bike once, slid off on ride. Got home before realised. Retraced and million to one find on roadside. Key for me. Will be interested in your ride appraisal when it happens.

Changes for the sake of it are rarely useful and often the opposite.

I quite like the keyless on my HD, it lives in my pocket & isn't a problem. Saves buggering about with an alarm that doesn't disarm/arm as the button has broke etc. Still need a key for the steering lock & panniers, so that's on the fob with it's keyring.

If the fob fails there's a procedure to type in a 5 digit code to start the bike, so seems quite well thought out.

My Triumph is keyless too, the fob gets put into the side pocket of the tail pack. Different procedure for a flat fob battery (wave the fob under the antenna) & the steering lock is electric, just a button on the right cluster.  Seat & panniers use the folded key on the fob to remove them.
😎  Always looking for the next corner.  😎
