Busa rear wheel to fit gsx1400

Hi guys,

Is the busa wheel a valid replacement for the gsx1400 with no real modification?

I want to add a brembo rear caliper and disc etc , I see there is bracketry more readily available for the busa for this mod.

Is it a good option?

I can't recall exactly, but from memory I think the front wheel can be swapped but the rear is specific to the 1400.  There are quite a few here that will know for sure though.

Thr gsx1400 rear wheel will only for the the gsx1400
The cush drive and disc bolts spacings are different.
The gsx1400 does share a front wheel with several other suzuki's .
You could do some fairly extensive mods and works and you might make it fit.
If you need a spare rear wheel I have one that needs a repaint so will be cheaper.
only a slightly modified gsx1400
oh and a standard one too

I haven't tried swapping them but I'm pretty sure there are differences.

... also when using Hayabusa parts remember there are 3 generations. There are differences between Gen-1, Gen-2 and Gen-3 wheels and brakes.

I too walked this path for quite some time, and it has been a not easy one :-)

The initially goal was to have a smaller rear disk -- 260mm is way too large to my taste, for several reasons, one of them being that was braking way too much (!) )

The idea seemed simple at the beginning, especially as 01/02 GSXRs and Gen 1 Busas (and most probably more Suzuki high-end bikes of the time) shared the same rear caliper.
But the more you dig, the bigger the issues show up.

First idea was, indeed, to look for a Busa or a GSXR wheel, but in addition to what @seth said above, the other issue is that the '14 swingarm is wider, so in addition to have to fiddle with spacers on the axle, I was taken aback by obviously foreseeable alignment difficulties of the back/front sockets.

Ok then. How about the disc? The '14 has a very specific disc (not outer diameter, but the inner one) so there is no alternative to make one hand made. I've spent quite some time in comparing the metrics of Suzuki dedicated rear discs measurements on Bandits, Busas, GSX(R)s, SVs, TLs, etc. (and this is not simple, I didn't manage to find any comparison table/chart anywhere), and be proud, dear GSX '14 owners, that it has a unique disk specification...Fortunately, especially for you Brits, AllBike Engineering can save your day here.

The other problem is that the OEM '01/'02 GSXR bracket (for a 220mm disc) and Gen 1 Busa (for a 240mmm disc) are narrower at the axle than the '14 one. Believe me, I managed to get the three of them to compare. So, spacers question again.
This one has sorted easily: the flanged spacer between the right hand wheel bearing and the caliper bracket has the exact width required to fit between the GSXR or Busa bracket and the the right arm of the swingarm. And the flange can be easily removed.
So if you use a '14 wheel, you would need, on the rightside of the wheel, the flanged spacer (or maybe not flanged anymore, if you've fitted a GSXR bearing seal before), the GSXR/Busa bracket, then another spacer as the first one, that you may have purchased used together with the bracket of your choice.

Ah, as we are almost there: now, 220mm or 240mm disc? Too bad, a 220mm disc would be a no-go as the wheel's hub diameter is too large to let the caliper go... OK for the 240mm one, then. So, go for the Busa Gen 1 bracket.

That worked for a while, but then I, too, wanted to have a 'standard', more modern 84mm caliper, especially motivated by the Busa brackets for those one can find here and there to fit this requirement.
So I went to the MHP (another Brit shop) to get this bracket and torque arm, and chose a HEL 84mm (Brit, again!) rear caliper as less expensive than Brembo P4 34 (although I'm not entirely happy with the choice of the latter).

Here are photos of the evolution from standard.
Note that I have Dymag wheels (yet again Brits :-) ) to 'standard' '14 measurements on purpose. Most probably Dymag would have been able to make a wheel with overall '14 specifications and measurements in terms of alignment, but with the ability to fit, say, smaller GSXR discs; however that would surely have lead to quite a lot of time (and money) spent. Note that Dymag wheels come with captive spacers, which is quite convenient, so I only have to deal with the one spacer between the caliper bracket and the swingarm on the right side.

Phase 1: regular disc (well, almost: EBC), OEM bracket and caliper (well, this very one is a GSXR one I've refurbished)
