4th gear only

Dont panic.. Not my bike.
A friend has a limited edition Barry Sheene Suzuki GSX750R (1of 50 made)..
He has just come back from The Isle of Man with gearbox failure..
He had to ride back using only 4th gear..

Can any of you have a guess as to whats likely to have broken in his gearbox?
wouldnt it be feesable to have the gearbox repaired?
Oh his bike has done 51k miles and he has owned it from new (its a 2005 I think).

Does the gear lever return spring work, I know someone who had a similar problem which turned out to be just the spring.

Other thing to check is the gear selectors by once the engine is remove the sump and have a look at the gearbox .

Aye my first thought was the same. If the lever doesn't return to center then the selector mech won't engage to change gear again.

Just spoken to my mate..
Details as follows:
1. The fault started when he went for 6th gear and there was a graunching noise as though the gears hadnt located 100%
2. He then changed down through the gears to 4th gear where the gear shift lever seemed to lock solid.
He says the clutch worked fine as he needed that to ride home..
The shift lever feels solid with no movement apparently.

He asked me to ask you if the spring you mentioned is replaceable/viewable by removing the sump???
Hes hoping to avoid engine removal..

Lastly has anyone got an exploded diagram of the gearboxshowing the possile faulty spring and its location??

Go to Robinsons Suzuki there might be a parts diagram for the gsxr 750 showing the gear box.

On the 14 you don't need to remove the sump or remove the engine. From look of diagrams it should be similar with your mate's GSXR 750. Goes by way of removing the clutch and the gearshift shaft. I just did that, but have to wait (4 weeks) for the gearshift shaft and the gearshift cam plate. Both are damaged as I found out. Spring clearly weakened too as expected and shows a couple wear (?) notches which would explain that some of them have been reported broken.

Speedy,I reckon it was a common problem on the k5 model,more so if ridden hard with wheelies etc, it's not me it's my pal who tells me this and he is a Suzuki dealer,give him a ring ,he may be able to tell you more on the matter,,,,,always wanted one of these by the way,  bandb Suzuki in Lincoln,ask for Pete,

Dont know if this makes a difference but his bike has a "Quick shifter" fitted.
