A year today

Insurance renewal tells me that it's a year today that I picked up my GSX1400.

3,500 miles later I still think it's a great bike and I will treat it to a nice oil and filter change as a reward.

Very nice Fishy!  I noticed you still have the original oil cooler end caps... any protection on the cooler itself?  Im thinking about changing out the existing protector I have (its a bit too 'blingy' for my taste) but would be good to use the 'original' end caps....

Shame on me, I haven't fitted an oil cooler guard yet. I will probably go for the Just Bandits one, as it is quite subtle and I like subtle. It's on my to-do list.

I agree with you though - the original caps are nice if you can keep them.

I've often wondered if aftermarket oil cooler guards increase the chances of cooler failure with the traditional bottom left hand corner leak?
The extra weight hung off it might be fatiguing the metal faster, having said that I think they'd fail anyway.

Emma's cooler guard has been on since new now 53000 miles with no problems with leaks or any signs of stress apart from the usual paint finish being crap.
But as I always say each to thier own as it's thier bike and thier cash at the end of the day.

My none blingy (rather nice) cooler guard doesn't allow the use of my end caps.

Im not bothered tho cos the none blingyness more than makes up...
Plus my guard curves around the ends anyway.

Yep...mine's been on since it was new (I guess) without any issue... wouldn't be without a guard, the coolers an expensive bit of kit to replace!

A standard Suzuki cool from them is around £720
There are now cheaper stronger copies about but still £240ish so a cheap guard for £20-30 can save loads of expense and grief.

My cooler failed at about 45k as is traditional then the second hand replacement failed at about the same total mileage, it's got a different design on now so it's not been an issue since.

It was just a thought that occurred to me. Btw both failures were expansion cracks rather than stone damage etc & mine has always had a guard on it too.

When my cooler gave up on my K6 it was my fault due to fitting aftermarket hoses putting extra stress on the join.
The later aftermarket coolers would not have the same problem as the joins are much improved and stronger.

My cooler also failed due to expansion issues at the lower left joint.
Mine had done around 33,000 miles.
