I think the reason the rear axle nut is on the sprocket side is that all single exhaust suzuki's have the silencer on the other side of the bike so having the nut on the sprocket side means it's easier to get at the nut for servicing purposes .
And it's become standard on suzuki's even twin silencer models .

As other have said there are flats on the axle so it can't spin.

That's my thoughts on it.
