Maybe a dumb thing to ask, just tell me if so. Seems its lower head bearing that works hardest. As a maintenance shortcut, if i lifted front end up, undid top yoke, lowered enough for bearing too come out bottom. Cleaned off and re greased. Just as annual thing rather than strip it all out. Is this a good idea in reality. Would it be that easy. Im all ears. Thanks gentlemen

I dont see why not i do it that way !.... i do it that way on my tiger and that has a ton of stuff in the way , so i would think on a naked bike it would be easer .
the ony thing i would say is you have to watch for stuff like grit and rust from the frame and inside the head stock from getting in the bearing , so the bike needs to be clean and i rap a clean peace of rag round the bearing and use an airline to blow out the the head stock before i clean the old grease off.
i intend to live for ever or die trying !!

Would depend how you lifted the bike I guess (as you could not use a headstock stand) but personally I wouldn't do it with the forks still in.
Nothing to do.............all day to do it....I love retirement

I think it'd be an utter pain to do without the bearing hitting the dirty frame & ruining your new grease. But if you could solve that it'd save a bit of time, mind you - once you've got the clocks, bars etc etc off to get the top yoke undone then it's only four more bolts to drop the forks anyway.

When I did the fork seals on my old 14 it was so easy to get the fork legs out and back in that I'd definitely take them out, they'll make the bottom yoke so much easier to handle plus you can do the job with less risk of getting dirt in there. One thing I would recommend though is taking the tank off as that's very easy to damage when stripping the front end off ;)

C'mon. Was I the only one thinking of Olivia Newton John in skintight leggings here? When I saw the header...? :boogie:

Yes BB, you were.    Mind you, I've now recalled that image you're referring to, hmmmm, yes, very nice.
