Title: C31 Fault
Post by: froudy on Tuesday, 28 March 2017, 07:28 AM
Since I rebuilt my bike I'm getting a very intermittent C31 code come up.
It's a Gear Position signal fault.
From initial start up and ride I don't get it. But if I park up for an hour or two and set off again it sometimes brings the F1 light on within the first half mile or so. The dealer mode switch I fitted brings the C31 fault code up. If I switch off and restart the bike it clears the fault and it stays off for the rest of the ride.

I've got a GiPro with ATRE fitted and it wasn't an issue before I did the rebuild. I've checked the loom and plugs where the GiPro plugs in..The only thing left for me to check tomorrow is the main grey multi plug from the throttle bodies and the +ve connection piggy backed into the fuse box wiring.

Maybe the GP switch itself but can't see it being faulty now as it was ok before I stripped the bike down :confused1:

Strange one this??

Have you checked all the earth / negative connections? ( for their Ohm reading )

Maybe there is some corrosion / paint/ primer that's causing this? ( could be just a brainfart  :embarassed:)

More checking to to tomorrow!!!
I thought I'd cured the fault taking connectors apart, cleaning and refitting. No such luck.
After starting the bike several times over the last few days it's been clear. Started up to ride over to Bristol this afternoon and FI light came straight on with C31.

Stopped bike and restarted and FI still on. Rode to Bristol with FI light on. Stopped for a few hours. Started bike to come home and it's still on...All the way home.
Rode home, stopped for fuel, restarted and it's gone off..Stayed off then for the rest of the journey :furious:

Got home, cleaned clutch switch and all seemed ok for about 5 starts...Then, even in neutral the GiPro is showing "6" gear..Which then cleared and FI cleared AGAIN :furious: :furious: :furious:

Tomorrow I'm going to disconnect the GiPro and see what happens :whatever:
Also I'll dive in behind the sprocket cover and re check everything.

It all points to maybe a loose connection as I didn't have any problem before I stripped and rebuilt the bike..Doing my head right in now

Thanks Mrg.
It's my OCD...It's not causing any problems, but I don't like seeing a red light in my peripheral vision when I'm riding

Thanks Dave..I was coming to that sort of conclusion as well. I'll unplug it tomorrow and see what happens :onya:

You were right Dave..
It was the GiPro.
I tested all wiring again, removed and cleaned the GPS. Still getting intermittent C31.
Reset GiPro and got it to re learn the gears 1-6.
Tested it and got "2" when I put it in first. "3" for second. "4" for fourth AND fifth and "6" for sixth.

Disconnected GiPro and fault cleared and hasn't come back, so GiPro now in the bin

AND I've moved the timing backplate back to give 5 degree ignition advance again now that the offending part has been binned.

The Gipro works from signals generated by the gear position sensor? could it be thats the fault and causing the GiPro to generate errors?  :smile2:

Fitting a Health Thunderbox and was getting error 31  :bugga: all was fine until I pulled off the side panel....my 45 years as a telecoms engineer kicked in. I had removed all accessories from the battery terminals and it was ok before then - Steve had a fault with his Gipro  bugger, the Gipro needs a permanent positive supply hence the error - sorted so thanks Steve  :)
