Like the look of the VStrom 800, been keeping an eye open for something with which to do some touring that allows us to explore the unsealed roads.
The 650 VStrom comes with a proven reputation but I think the HP drop from a 14 when two up might leave me a bit underwhelmed.
Nice choices Daytona, enjoy your new rides.

Sad days @Daytona, let go of mine almost 10 years ago now, and still regret having to it, but for me it too was becoming unmanageable, same as you.

Still got to z900?

Bloody hip cramps, I've spent the last 6 months physio, chiro, exercises, stretching. Nothing has helped.Sell my 14??Not a thought I enjoy.  Apart from a forward controls bike are any others going to help the cramps?

Nice choice of replacements, both far lighter and lower than the GSX.
Did you encourage the new owner of said GSX to join our group ?
May I be so bold as to ask the selling price and condition ?

Please don't think you have to leave us either. Once a GSX1400 owner always an owner 🙏🙏

Just like Daytona, bloody hip cramps, excruciating pain.Tried exercises, physio, chiro, magnesium, had to turn for home last little ride, too painful. To sell my 14, a day I hoped never to come. I'll try again but looks like I need a fwd control bike. List is limited, no Harleys or big cruisers. Rocket of course but too big.I got it down to Trump Speedmaster or Kawa Vulcan 650. Took them both for a ride, vastly different machines.I actually preferred the Kawa, still felt like a nice handling/ nimble bike.Could I live with it? Choice is plain, no bike or decide. Thoughts Gentlemen.

If we live long enough, moving to a lighter bike is something we'll all have to face.
I suspect you've made many, many memories riding the 14 and it's time to enjoy something different.

The Vulcan has a lot of adjustability built in with its ERGO-FIT system, and is a nimble wee thing. I've a soft spot for Kwakas because I've owned a couple and loved them.

What about the BMW 1800?
Title: Re: Farewell to my 14
Post by: grog on Monday, 29 June 2026, 06:36 PM
Might sound stupid to most but that little Kawa actually reminded me of riding my Diavel 10 years ago. 1/3  power, braking etc but somehow i liked it. Triumph was sort of wishing i was on a Rocket. I really dont want to change but 71 soon, not like choosing another bike when i was 20 unfortunately. Kawa can be updated easily to 70bhp, in the 70s my 650 Yamaha was 53 and i was happy with it.My 900 Ducati around 70 and thought amazing. Our expectations/ normalities sure do change. Sorry Eric, no BMW for me.

I had an RD350 YPVS with only 50-odd HP, and had some of the best biking years on it. Sometimes a bike just fits what we want, when we want it.

As much as I'd like to say get the Speedmaster, that Kawa looks very nice indeed and it'll be much cheaper to service than the Triumph.  Feet forward was the game changer for me, just much more comfortable, (cos I'm big n heavy) so having my knees bent up on the 14 just stopped working for me.

same age here and same pains ! got the triumph Tiger and after 900 miles over the last 3 weeks no hip pain . Thought I would struggle with lack of power against my mates but not at all - loving it. Oh, the 14 is going to the trade, no buyers sadly = £3800 a steal but that's life

Notty, glad youre enjoying, thats what its all about. My 14 to me is ultimate bike, 15 yrs of my upgrades, much talk about dos and donts on this forum. They say a door shuts, another opens.Past life was 5 yrs Suzuki, 11 yrs Ducati then 15 yrs Suzuki. My hips on 14 crazy pain. Now over 70, need a plan. Fwd pegs needed.

About 18 years ago, I had 2 stockish Hayabusa's. Both had low bars and fairings. Both of them gave me pain, arm, neck, back. I was about 45 at the time but just couldn't get on with them. Tried heaps of stuff.

1 I sold when I bought the B- King,
1 I streetfightered.
A pair of upright less sporty position bikes.

Fast forward 18 years and I'm back on 2 Hayabusa's!

I'd have laughed at anyone back then who'd predicted that.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder @Notty. We all know your bike is a work of art.
The trade buyer is getting a bargain and is probably aware of the true value and they always low ball every buyer because that's how they make a handsome profit.
I'm really glad you've got your joy for riding back and it's pain free.
You know the old saying "move it or lose it" so I stretch every morning and night because I sit all day behind the wheel of my truck. Hip mobility is ultra crucial to remaining stable and mobile.
Cheers mate 🥳🥳🥳

@grog I too used to get hip cramps on the 14 and it was one of the reasons I sold mine almost 10 years ago now. I found the Triumph Tiger and now my GS much more comfortable after I bought them but on longer trips, still had some pain in my hips. Since fitting some bar risers also fitting lowered foot-pegs my seating position has been much improved. Still occasionally get a hip cramp, but it is only occasional.

Lower Foot Peg kits are still available on eBay (at least in the UK) for the GSX1400. You might also try some bar risers and perhaps raising the seat height by fitting one of the hawk type cushions. Perhaps also consider getting your seat re-sculpted, the standard seat is quite rectangular, having the edges rounded off makes a big difference to comfort (I had that done on my 1400)

Trust me @grog there are ways around this, it just takes a bit of experimentation to find out what works for you

Maybe the air mesh could also assist Grog.  I had one on my B/W and still got one on the Yam 700 quad.  The rocket doesn't need one, it's comfy as it is.   Think Eric has a mesh seat cover as well these days.

Can imagine what it'd be like sitting on a full sheepskin after it's been sitting out in the rain all night on an away trip. Least with vinyl you can wipe it dry.

The sheep skin is usually easily removable Col. I also used it for warmth or a pillow when I used to camp at rallies when I was much younger of course 😳😳
I still have it in the cupboard a bit like a security blanket 🙀

yes, ive got the "windrider" 3D printed mesh cover on the 1402's seat, plus also on the BMW.  Comfy, allows airflow through, but Id like a touch more height and padding. My idea is to try an airhawk under the windrider mesh cover. Will have to check marketplace, thx for the tip.  Maybe a sheepskin one day, theres a place near me that does all sorts of sheepskin products, might try them, see what they say.

I have one on my 14 for years I ended up reversing it with the wide bit to the front, on long rides it's better on the inside of my leg I think the seat rib doesn't help circulation.

Been using an Airhawk for a couple of years now. It's amazing how little air you need in them, too much is no good, you just roll around.

Your seat look's modified already Col 😳 was it not comfortable enough or just longer journeys ?
